Well thats not restricted to education haha… merely the tendency of people to avoid hard work, dashing from one thing to the next, expecting novelty to carry them through. However, that certainly doesn’t mean someone shouldn’t look for career that isn’t interesting to them. Interest will wax and wane, but you still want to have a job that is interesting to you most of the time.

I have always wanted to really learn a language, but I know I would not be able to put in the required effort needed to truly grasp and embrace the language because the end result to me does not seem to merit that kind of work. For some people it does. So just because it is interesting does not mean you should do it.

I believe interest is vital, however. If you hate what you do then you will be miserable. Now I understand that all jobs will have their ups and downs, but in general if you enjoy what you do then that is where you need to be.

I have no interest in say computer science, so I am not going to go major in comp sci. I believe this is a perfectly valid way of looking at things and making this decision.

I am going to just be honest about myself. I do have many talents. I find that certain things come natural to me in school. My biggest issue is trying to find where I can utilize those talents the best. I see many areas that I feel I could be successful in and enjoy at the same time. This is my predicament.

IF someone could tell me a better way of looking at this, then please do. I am at a crossroads and don’t know which one to take. This is something that truly bothers me when I have many friends that just know what they want to do with their life. I’m just not their yet. But once I commit, I am up for the grind regardless.

And at zzzmaril- I took your first comment personally only because it questions my work ethic and whether I’m willing to grind things out in the long haul. Thanks for clarifying your post to me, I understand your point that interest only goes so far. I’m using the word “interest” because I’m just grasping at straws because I have no idea what area I want to start out in. Like I said, any insight on how to make such an important decision would be helpful.

aggieengineer, it is very common for college students to not know exactly what they want to do with their lives when they are only 18 or 19 years old. The average student changes their major at least once during their collegiate career. I changed mine three times and still ended doing something completely different than my major when I graduated. All you can do is try it out. You have quite a few general ed courses your freshman and sophomore years. Try out different kinds of engineering classes to get a feel for what you would like to specialize in. Courses that you take that don’t ultimately apply to your final major choice can be used as electives in your degree plan so you won’t waste many hours of credit.

Now is the best time in life to explore your choices. All your options are still open.

^ I agree, aggieengineer. Thats pretty much where I am at the moment…

My problem is that I choose one major for one reason then I realize that it doesn’t encompass exactly what I want to study. For example, I am in nuclear right now because I thought it would delve extensively into quantum mechanics, but come to find out, quantum mechanics is more of a subject for physics majors instead and is covered only slightly in nuclear which seems odd to me. I do want to stick to engineering though because I feel it encompasses many of the subjects I am good at, but there’s just so much to choose from.

Well, engineering focuses on application, whereas pure science focuses on research. If you want to work in quantum mechanics, you’ll probably want to go with pure science, though its harder to make a steady living. I don’t think there’s currently any quantum mechanical engineering, though I could be wrong. Nanoengineering might go there, I don’t know.

I’m planning on looking into a physics minor, possibly.

To answer yalls questions Environmental Design is actually just what our architecture program is called. And On behalf of the class of 2012(A-A-A-Whoop!!!) I want to welcome you all…oh and fish camp is amazing do it.

Hey guys I’m Tong-Tong, I know it’s a ■■■■■■■■ name, add me on facebook if you’d like, I’m PUMPED FOR A&M!! Is anyone here living at the Traditions next year?

Hey guys, are all of u done applying for housing? Ever since i’ve tried applying it says "All housing spaces are filled for the coming Fall 2010 semester. " I emailed them and they said that it’ll open up sometime in early may and then again in mid june, but it hasn’t changed since AGES! Please could u suggest some other alternatives.
Ohh and add me on fb too, I’m I s h i t a Mandhan, but send me a msg saying ur going to TAMU! :D

Stargurl, Have you tried the Tradition or the Cambridge. They are off campus dorms, not affiliated with the university. They will cost over $10,000 a year.

Aggie Engineer, I’m also in Nuclear Engineering now. If you like quantum mechanics, consider a double major in physics. If you plan to go to grad school, consider a Master’s or a Ph.D. in physics. I’m considering many of these routes, but I think it is safest to first get a BS in nuclear engineering so that you can find a job with a nuclear utility or regulator as a backup plan.

hey guys i’m shaonee (it rhymes with brownie if that helps :P) i’m going to be a microbio major in the college of science! and i’m going to the june 17-18 NSC. Me and my friend are hopefully going to the last fish camp so we can just move in to the dorms before fish camp. Hope to meet some of you sometime!! :)

@ mchrisp10 : I decided on the tradition :)

Im Ryan, and I am going to be majoring in mechanical engineering, with either a double major or minor in chemistry

I am going to be staying at the traditions, its cool to see how many people are doing engineering :)

Yay so many engineers! :)

Just talked with my advisor and looks like I will be doing physics instead of nuclear engineering. Probably minor in NukeE since I have a lot of AP credit to use.

So does that mean you have to change your CC screen name? xD
I’m still sticking with MechE for the major, but liking the idea of a minor in Physics.

Yeah, I choose to do mechanical engineering because it kind of brings together a lot of the other fields of engineering.

hahaha I know right? I’m going to have to change the screen name (taking suggestions). Mech is a great way to go. I also recommend emailing your advisor if you have any questions. I found out mine took a similar route as what I’m looking at.

Howdy! I’m Mark, majoring in Geography. Going to NSC June 22-23 and Fish Camp session C.

I’m going to fish camp C and Impact Omega
Is anyone else doing Impact?
