Class of 2015 Cal Poly Pomona Future residents

The traffic wasn’t specific to CPP, but just allthedriving involved in being back in LA. Sigh. I lived here 20 years ago, and I’ve lived in N. Cal, NYC, and DC, andthere really isnothing like the hassle of getting around “LA”.

I also wantedto mention how quiet the wonderful student center was,and the youngladyworking there side quite matter of factly"that’s because kids gomhome on the weekend, but usuallyit’s very busy".

I have two minutes and two questions ( we are on our way to LMU this AM). Does anybody know the size of the school off hand, and the retention rate in engineering? How about what happens if you want to switch from one engineering major to another?

From the CPP website: Today, the campus covers 1,438 acres and is the second largest in area among the California State University’s 23 campuses. More than 3,000 faculty and staff support the education of 21,000 students.

As far as “kids going home” on the weekends - I think that will decrease as the freshmen are “required” to live on campus, although I know my son will be coming home most weekends (girlfriend). I wish it wasn’t so - although I love her, I wish he’d stay up there more & get more set in the college lifestyle. I think he’ll find that he’ll NEED to stay up there to work on projects on the weekend, etc.

We did talk about retention rate a bit in our “seminar”. Dr. Yeung said that they really can’t compare or calculate yet, as it used to be quite low (25%) before impaction, when they admitted more kids (with ‘lower’ stats/skills) which didn’t allow the professors to have as much time with each student. He said that they expect, with the greater “standard” of student that is being admitted, as well as the smaller number of students overall admitted, that the retention rate should go up substantially. Impaction started two years ago, so they don’t have the data (graduating class) to calculate it yet.

And… I think that it’s easier to change majors within the School of Engineering than from without, but still difficult as all (I believe) of the branches of engineering are impacted. I would think that 3rd-year changes, like incoming transfers, MIGHT have priority over incoming freshman. I do know that changing “options” within Civil Engineering is as easy as filling out some paperwork (according to Dr. Yeung).

Have a good day at LMU! One of my daughter’s friends plays on the baseball team there!

Michele

Does anybody know when is orientation? or move in day? And one more question; is there anything to do on the weekends because i’m going to be living in the dorms and i wont have a car, so if everybody is leaving on the weekends what am i suppose to do lol? be lonely? :(

I’m fairly OCD about knowing everything/checking everything, and I haven’t seen the orientation days released yet. There are several based on which college you’re in. I think ONE of them is July 7/8, but that was only through some deduction. :-D

Move-in day is Wednesday, Sept. 21 unless you attend the Welcome Week (which starts on Sunday the 18th). If you go to Welcome Week, you get to move in early. School starts on the 22nd, so I’d think it prudent to go to WW (although there is a cost) just for the opportunity to NOT move in right before school starts!

There’s not a LOT to do in the immediate vicinity, although there is a good bus/train/metro system available nearby to get to stuff. I’m sure there will be SOME people on campus. ;-)

Michele

CPP Mom, you are amazing! I always know that when you post stuff, it’ll answer pretty much all of my questions  haha thank you so much!

By the way, everyone, if you’re looking for a good way to find a roommate or just find other people who are attending next year, there’s this website I found called ■■■■■■■■.com where you can register through your facebook and it tells you people who will be going next year, what they’re majoring in, and other things that they feel like posting. It’s actually pretty cool! Also, make sure you like the Cal Poly Pomona Class of 2015 page on facebook! The guy who made it said he’ll be posting it to a group to make it easier to talk, but that’s another way to meet people! Just a few suggestions :)

I went to engineering day yesterday. I enjoyed the campus, if anyone visited SLO the buildings seem somewhat the same which I liked. Being a Saturday, the school was dead. The only people I saw there were there for the tour, and about 2 students that weren’t volunteering. We talked to the people who lead our tour and they said that its basically like that every weekend which was kind of disappointing but the people who live on campus are still there so im sure it would be fine in the dorms. No offense to the engineering students (since I will be one) but everyone in my group was either very nerdy or seemed so school focused that they’d never talk to anyone and I certainly wouldn’t want to live with them. Hopefully the rest of the students are more normal and calm/chill but if not I still liked the school more than I thought.

Just remember, that even if the school seemed “dead”, many of the students MAY have been just off campus enjoying the day!

Perhaps they GOT off campus to avoid the big crowd that was touring! ;-)

Michele

CPPmom , we must have been in the same seesion! I couldn’t quite remember what had changed and why he couldn’t say, and my husband stepped out just about then and really wanted to know. (He was the black gentleman who kept getting paged and stepping out to take calls. I was sitting right behind the guy who feel backward in the wheelchair.)

Shrinkrap - that was my dad who fell … numbskull! I told him I was watching him tipping back … just like my 5th graders! They don’t get a lot of my sympathy either. ;-)

I remember your family! I rescued your son’s hat after the transportation “class” & I remember your son raising his hand that he was from the bay area.

Nice to meet you! hahah

Michele

Thanks CPP mom for the info, wow i can’t believe move-in day is that late! wow, I dont think i’ve ever started school that late! But i just cant wait to start, i’ll be the first one in my family to go to a university lol. Hey but one question, is cal poly pomona on the semester or quarter system? and P.S. dbh2024, lol it was funny what you said about the engineering students because atleast from my experience what your saying is true. Im going to be a chemistry major, might wanna switch to chemical engineering but idk yet, but what im trying to say is that im sort of an oddball to the “engineering types” because im not the kind of person who would typically be interested in that field.

CPPmom, TOO funny! Your dad was pretty funny too! He handled it well!

LOVED engineering day, but unfortunately LMU was QUITE the spectacle… sigh…still trying to sell ccp.

Shrinkrap - good luck with your decision.

All indicators pointed to CPP for my son. He had his eye on a couple of other schools, but the hands-on opportunities as well as the “extras” he’ll be a part of in Kellogg were enough to solidify his choice.

druce - CPP is on the quarter system.

Michele

Yeah, for me the hands-on opportunities really made me choose Cal Poly over all the other schools i had to choose from. Not to mention the cheap tuition, i was considering Chapman, but 40,000$ a year was way to much!

Most of the professors teaching at Cal Poly Pomona are working industry professionals, so you’ll definitely get some serious learn-by-doing experience from experienced industry professionals moreso than “teachers” who teach by the books. A tip to anyone that’s taking Calculus-level or higher math courses and are comfortable with math (I say comfortable because his classes are super fast paced), take Professor Joseph Lim. He’s a 16-year veteran electrical & software engineer at Raytheon  and a profound professor.

SO jealous! Does your son post here or on facebook or something?

Brendan checks in on FB – if your son is on FB, have him message Brendan Osinski & let him know he was on tour with us.

He’d love to chat! He’s not the nerdy, quiet type AT ALL! haha. He was kinda quiet on Saturday, but more because he was tired. He & my dad had fun racing the wheelchair after lunch & the dorm tour. We went down to the library (my daughter is a librarian at Point Loma Nazarene Univ. in San Diego), Student Center (Brendan wanted to show my dad the pool tables ;-)), and bookstore.

Michele

Son is wearing his CPP shirt today,( says it’s number 2!), and thinks he met your son! Point Loma was on the list way back when ( six months ago); son wanted to play soccer there.

Son quit facebook a month or so ago, because it “wasted too much time”. We shall see… D also quit, but just for lent.

CPPmom, ill probably add him as a friend for the heck of it. :)

@ocboy - Go for it! Even though I’m the one posting here (he’s too busy with school, tennis & a bazillion other things), he’d enjoy talking to other kids who are CPP-bound!
