@Apollo11, then I hope you get in. Saving money is always nice.

@AnImpAffliction
I too hope the Wheel of Fortune lands on the million dollar prize…

Also, have you looked into independent scholarships?

@Apollo11, I’ve been looking on Z i n c h and applied to a couple easy-to-apply scholarships but it’s been taking a backseat because of college essays. I should be doing that too. UGH so much to look at.

@AnImpAffliction

hopkins is certainly not known for it’s CS programs, its existence usually isn’t the best rationale

why isn’t MIT/carnegie mellon/Cornell on your list? you are avoiding the top 10 CS schools…

Updated list in order of preference

MIT

UChicago (Though UChicago just passed Harvard in order of preference and is a close 2nd)

Harvard

Reed College

Cornell (Really hard to distinguish whether I like Reed or Cornell better, so pretty much a tie)

Boston University

Northeastern University

University of Minnesota- Twin Cities

Brandeis University

Stony Brook (Instate)

McGill University (Financial Reach)

Boston College

University of Maryland College Park

Ohio State University

UMass Amherst

Maybe:

URochester

Schools I will probably take off the list in the future:

McGill
Boston College
UMass Amherst
Maybe University of Maryland CP

Ideally I’d like to apply to 12 schools

@foolish, true but I could never get into MIT/Cornell/Carnegie Mellon. I have a better chance at Johns Hopkins than those schools.

Cornell and Carnegie Mellon have equal or easier admission standards than Johns Hopkins. Especially CMU. Johns Hopkins is a difficult university with the same level of admissions difficulty, @AnImpAffliction

Is anyone applying to any schools they haven’t visited?? I’ve visited a few colleges but prob won’t get to visit the majority of the ones I’m applying to until after I’ve applied or possibly been admitted.

@z0e101
I probably am, but I recommend the below book. It essentially serves as a college tour to a lot of places that I’d never be able to visit and it is really really good.

http://www.amazon.com/Students-Guide-Colleges-Definitive-Experts/dp/0143035584

@z0e101 I’ve only visited 3 of the colleges that I’m applying to (2 are in-state) but the rest are too far away. Visiting the campus itself has never been a high priority of mine but others might think otherwise.

Online or virtual visits might be possible, @z0e101

Thanks! @Apollo11 I’m still trying to FIND colleges to apply to, and what’s in state isn’t really impressing me or doesn’t seem like a fit, so this may help.

@z0e101
You can also ask on a university’s CC page if any students can answer your questions

@z0e101

I’m sending applications to some of the more prestigious schools (Stanford, Princeton, Yale, etc.) without visiting. If I manage to get in, I’ll fly out and go look at them. If not, I just wont worry about it.

@z0e101

@Pikidikitiki brings up a good point. Most colleges host a program after decisions go out for kids who get in. MIT’s version is called CPW and it allows kids to visit and do all that stuff, just after they’re accepted

College list:
- Boston University
- Brandeis
- GWU
- Gordon College
- Tufts University
- UMass Amherst
Any Massachusetts residents out there?
