Class of 2015 EA Decision Thread

me niether, didnt get an email, I’m sure they’ll send us all a letter with all the forms and stuff (the acceptance packet) in a couple of days.

Can you please confirm on the early action deadline date for Georgia tech ? Is it October 1 or November 1?

also , what is PSP?

Most of the early action deadlines are around Nov 1 . Does that mean Georgia tech early action deadlines are much early compared to the rest?

Typically when (date) is the application made available? Do the essay requirements change every year? If October 1 is the deadline, is there sufficient time to apply after the application process begins?

How many reference letters are needed for Georgia tech?

Planning to apply for next year.

Also can you please help me on the essay requirements, application format , etc since one cannot use common application for georgia tech.

Really appreciate your advice on the above. thank you.

Directly from Jill Putman:

"We release admission decisions on set notification dates. Students who applied by October 1 will receive an admission decision posted online to their Buzzport account on November 19. Students who applied by November 1 will receive an admission decision posted online to their Buzzport account on December 17.
Can you please confirm on the early action deadline date for Georgia tech ? Is it October 1 or November 1?
It’s October 1st.

what is PSP?
President’s Scholarship Program - I don’t know much about it but I know you need to be a top student to get it. [Georgia Institute of Technology :: President’s Scholarship Program :: Home](http://www.psp.gatech.edu/) for more info.

**
Most of the early action deadlines are around Nov 1 . Does that mean Georgia tech early action deadlines are much early compared to the rest?**
Yup, that’s exactly right.

Typically when (date) is the application made available?
It was made available September 1st this year I believe. Don’t worry, there is plenty of sufficient time.

Do the essay requirements change every year?
This year’s essays were the same as the previous years essays. They release the official essays in mid-July or mid-August I believe, so you can get a jump start if you wish.

How many reference letters are needed for Georgia tech?
None, they don’t read them.

Also can you please help me on the essay requirements, application format , etc since one cannot use common application for georgia tech.
1 essay out of 2 topics - max of 5000 characters. I wrote mine in 4000 characters (little over 800 words) but there is technically no minimum. Can’t really explain the application format - it’s a lot like the common app.

Is Math Major popular in Georgia tech?
I wouldn’t say as popular as the Engineering majors, but it’s a very good program.

do we need to apply for the major during the application process itself or can it be decided later?
You need to specify either a major or undecided on the application if I remember correctly, but I’m sure it can be changed later.

Thanks a lot.

Does the application not have any slot for recommendation letters at all? Which are the other good colleges that do not require recommendation letter?

Are the essays made available BEFORE the actual application availability? You had mentioned essays are available in mid august and applns open in Sept … and hence the clarification

The official AP scores and official SAT scores - do they need to be sent directly from collegeboard to them DURING the application process itself?

Is it possible to register online now itself just to view the application format, essay etc to apply in 2011? If yes , will the login details be valid until next year when the real application is made?

How is the accomodation facility, food etc in the campus?

Thanks again.

I didn’t tell them that because honestly i thought my course load looked strong enough regardless. Also there are always a few kids applying from my school every year so i figured they would know.

Yep, no slot at all for recs. I’m applying to schools for engineering (as opposed to math like you) so I don’t know any of the top math colleges.

The essays are posted on their site before the application is available. You can type them out in Word/OpenOffice/Notepad/etc in July and then copy-paste your essay into the application box when the app comes out.

Yes, you need to send official SAT scores directly from the CollegeBoard. Same w/ AP scores, though I don’t think they consider those.

And yeah, you could register online now to view the format. Don’t know if the login details will be valid the following year but what you could do is just make a throw-away email address and register an application with the throw-away email address this year just to get your peak at the app.

Housing and all that - I’m not a current student but I have visited and it seemed like a typical college dorm. The food was more or less what you’d expect out of college food. I guess that’s really the only way I can put it, but I’m not the right person to ask for that one. Check out College “Rowler”…they have reviews on all that stuff for GT.

Will some semi finalists for PSP post their stats? I was selected and will post mine soon! And congrats to everyone. I didn’t know ga tech deferred but I’m sure you will all get in!

Hassapi and Others

Congrats! Is multivariable calculus being offered in your school? If not, can you please advise as to how and where you could take it online?

Also is AP stats a good choice for senior load assuming Calc BC is done by Junior and there is no other math option?

How difficult or easy is AP stats for someone who has completed Calc BC in the junior? Does it have a big value add on one;s application?

For some reason, I dont see many students taking AP stats and hence my question…

Thanks

^ I think Hassapi went to a “public magnet” (either ROckdale or Gwinnett) which offer high level math courses. U can also take multivariable calc at local colleges, which is also common. AP stats is extremely easy. Take it. High school math courses shouldn’t be a problem for u if ur a potential math major. U should go beyond it.

Yeah, I go to a public magnet and take Multi and Diff Eq at a local university (Catholic U). The professor actually comes to our school to teach us. I have to get up early though … :frowning: haha

I actually take AP stats as well. It’s a joke. If you want to challenge yourself after BC, take multi. Multi is not hard at all, but it’s really interesting and cool to think about theoretically. I take Diff eq next semester, so I don’t know what to expect.

Yes, I am inclined on Math major definitely. When you said , I should go beyond the high school courses (calc AB sophomore year, BC in junior and plan to take STAT in senior year), can you please explain what you mean and how to go about it?

Also really need your advice on the below…

I am very interested in pursuing Math (may be with theoretical physics combo).

What are the job prospects of a Math Major vs an Engineering Major (say for eg - Computer Science).

For some reason, it seems to me that, Math major is not so popular even amongst those who are really passionate about Math… are there any reasons why?

Which are the top colleges that are really reputed for Math Majors? What are the future prospects of those students? Why is not being as sought after as the Engg. Majors?

Is BSc Engg a better qualification as such compared to BSc Math or BSc Physics?

Do we need to write the intended major in the common application? Is it possible to change later? Also I think for US colleges, we apply for the college and NOT the major initially…

Appreciate your confirmation on the above…

Thanks.

If you are very interested in hardcore theoretical math like complex analysis, topology, advanced linear algebra, etc… then a math major suits you. Let me warn you that majoring at math at a good university is extremely difficult, but if your interests are in theoretical math then go for it.

The top universities for math are Princeton, Harvard, MIT, Stanford, among others. As far as job prospects go, I know that many Princeton math grads get hired by companies like Goldman Sachs. You can also pursue a PhD in math and become a research professor.

If your interests lie in applied physics and applied math, then definitely shoot for an engineering major. Engineering majors usually do make more money than math majors right out of college, but do not let starting salaries bias your opinions. In other words, do something you are interested in. Success will come naturally.

I mean seriously, math is the hardest major if u really want to pursue it in depth. It’s not for everyone. My father was an IMO medalist when he was young, and several of his peers in the IMO team (also medalists) dropped out of math and chose another career (some went insane, literally). Math is in my opinion, the hardest subject cuz it requires so much abstract and critical thinking. If u don’t have a solid math background, namely, from middle school to high school (placing high on Mathcount and doing well on competitions such as AMC, AIME, USAMTS, and of course, USAMO), I highly advise you not to pursue it, but rather choose something else such as engineering. Math’s difficulty explains why there is so few undergraduate research for math, but if you feel that u love math to its bitter end, please do it, and try it for urself.

Thanks a ton guys! really helpful information.

If someone is confused between Math and Computer Science for example, is it possible to declare the major only in the second year during college? HOw does it actually work? I guess, we need NOT mention the major during the application process itself. Can it be decided later on… Or is it a mandatory field during the application process (say MIT appln or Berkely or Common application? Can it be left blank??

Thanks again!!

Hi. I’m a new member - a mom. Congrats to all accepted! I am wondering, does anyone know the number of people accepted vs. deferred vs. denied?
