Decision: Waitlisted

Objective
[ *] ACT: 32
[ *] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.95
[ *] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 9/325, top 4%

[ *] Job/Work Experience: two jobs: one year round at local library shelving books, second summers running database for neighborhood swim team
[ *] Volunteer/Community service: NHS (various projects, relay for life), independent theatre company (run huge summer camp at local theatre every summer), school activities (especially for IB; giving tours, info sessions, mc’ing stuff)
[ *] Essays: relatively good. WashU only uses the common app essay, and mine was original but perhaps slightly disorganized
[ *] Teacher Recommendation: probably very good, haven’t seen them
[ *] Counselor Rec: very good

Other
[ *] Applied for Financial Aid?: yes
[ *] Intended Major: Urban Studies/Political Science
[ *] State (if domestic applicant): Maryland
[ *] School Type: Public
[ *] Ethnicity: Caucasian
[ *] Gender: Female
[ *] Income Bracket: ~120,000
Reflection
[ *] Strengths: passion, very good grades, writing
[ *] Weaknesses: standardized testing, un-originality
[ *] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: white suburban girls who want to study political science are a dime a dozen! Looking back I don’t think I stand out much amongst those applying to washu, and with no supplemental essays I didn’t have much space to try to do so more than with my common app essay.

Congrats to everyone accepted!

Good Luck to all!!!

My son got accepted, had solid credentials, but didn’t get into Caltech (LOL). Think the deciding factor for WUSTL was that he fell in love with their labs during a special tour we had requested. He is very interested in the research area he visited, and the professors/lab techs were incredibly kind to him (they took him into a clean lab filled with millions of dollars of equipment). He didn’t actually interview and we didn’t think they would even log his interest in his file (we schedule the tour through the engineering department without going through admissions). They jokingly told him during his lab tour that they would love to have him join them next year, but good luck getting in. He is very excited—now we have to figure out how to pay for it!!

[*] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: beats me. I was a little surprised to be honest, but I didn’t really want to go to wash u anyway. Not because it isn’t a great school, but I don’t think it’s the best fit for me. I got into georgetown though, so I’m not too depressed…
