Decision: Waitlisted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): did not take
[] ACT: 35
[] SAT II (if submitted): didn’t submit, I didn’t think they were strong enough.
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): reported to colleges as “top 10%,” but I’m really 2/600 or so.

[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): just like National Honor Society, AP Scholar with Distinction, will-be valedictorian

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Band (drum major and alto sax section leader), co-founded a tutoring company, CSF (president), more clubs, Quidditch Club (just wanted to throw that out there, but I’m not sure if I put it on my application or not.)
[] Job/Work Experience: co-founded my own tutoring company with two friends and managed it, summer intern at UCLA Engineering
[] Volunteer/Community service: California Scholarship Federation, Discovery Center Teens (local club of teens that do science things for kids in the area), volunteer tutor at a local elementary school
[] Essays: I definitely think I could’ve done better.
[] Teacher Recommendation: I think they were probably pretty good.
[] Counselor Rec: probably good but generic
[] Additional Rec: N/A
[] Interview: Requested one too late, but they marked on my application that I “showed interest in having an interview.”

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
[] Intended Major: Chemical Engineering

[] Weaknesses: Probably lackluster (or not eye-opening) rec letters, no interview, not as much community service as I could have had.
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: The weaknesses above. It’s only the start of my college chain, with thirteen decisions waiting for me. Looks like a no to WUSTL, but it wasn’t my top choice. Good luck to everyone![/li][/ul]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: essays, recommendations, extracurricluar
[] Weaknesses: SAT SAT SAT SAT SAT SAT!!! ughhh
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: my super low SAT and trying to be in pre-med. The only reason why I was probably waitlisted was because of my essays. [/li][/ul]General Comments: Oh well. I’m not too disappointed since I wasn’t even planning on going here but it still sucks to be waitlisted. I mean, if I got waitlisted here, what does this say about my decision from all the other Ivy’s I’m still waiting to hear back from? Boo. Congrats to those who got in!

Decision: Accepted!

I’m too excited to post stats right now!!! :D

Chippedtea- you are certainly good enough. A wait list from wustl will not set the stage for your life. You will have some terrific acceptances coming to you over the next 3 weeks. Keep your head up and look forward.

Decision: Accepted (Olin)

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2370 superscore (2 sittings) - 800 CR, 800 Wr, 770 M
[] ACT: Did not take.
[] SAT II (if submitted): Math II 800, Literature 800, Chinese w/Listening 800, World History 770, Physics 720
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.99 or 4.00. I’m not sure; my school only does weighted.
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1/732
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): AP World History (5), AP Statistics (5), AP Psychology (5), AP Language and Composition (5), AP US History (5)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): IB Psychology (6), IB Spanish (6)
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Spanish, AP Calculus AB, IB Math SL, IB History of the Americas HL, IB English HL, IB Physics HL, an advanced choir. I am also self-studying AP Microeconomics and AP Macroeconomics.
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Eh…nothing, really. National Merit Finalist, GCC Leader, AP Scholar with Distinction, a few state level academic team and math awards, plus All-State and All-Region choir chairs.
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): classical voice and piano, a correspondence course to write for children, organized/directed/founded various events, published writer and photographer, a little modeling, Mu Alpha Theta (president), Spanish Club (president), an academic competition team (co-captain), NHS, etc. Nothing spectacular.
[] Job/Work Experience:
[] Volunteer/Community service: ~150 hours at a library and working with dyslexic children.
[] Essays: I personally think they were, if not bad, then at least not the best. To give you an idea of quality, I wrote 10 application essays over two weeks of winter break. (Procrastination is my Achilles’ heel.)
[] Teacher Recommendation: I think they were probably wonderful. I have very close relationships with my teachers, who have taught me for two years now.
[] Counselor Rec: She claimed it was great, but considering that she does not know me personally, I doubt it was anything that would stand out in the WashU pool.
[] Additional Rec: None.
[] Interview: I was not offered one. (Was I supposed to be? o.O)
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
[] Intended Major: International Business
[] State (if domestic applicant): Arkansas
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Large public with a very good reputation.
[] Ethnicity: Chinese.
[] Gender: Female.
[] Income Bracket: It’s fluctuated a lot recently, so I’m not sure.
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): Legacy? My father was a WashU law student, but I doubt this actually helped me.
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Stats, teacher recommendations.
[] Weaknesses: ECs, essays. I was also concerned because of my family’s history with WashU. My sister was accepted four years ago, but did not attend. My father, though an alum, never donated significantly to WashU.
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I’ve heard that the business school is fairly “numbers-oriented”, so it’s likely that my stats helped me more with Olin than they would have at, say, the College of Arts and Sciences. Also, my high school appears to have a strong relationship with WashU: we have at least two or three acceptances a year.
[/li]

[/ul]General Comments:

Personal thoughts - I’m happy with this decision, but truthfully, I’m leaning heavily toward a full ride at Emory right now. I prefer Atlanta to St. Louis, and I also prefer Goizueta to Olin. I’ll have to see what comes around on March 30th.

To those who were accepted - Congratulations!!! I may see you at the accepted students weekend?

To those who were wait-listed or rejected - Do not be discouraged. One school’s evaluation of your application is perhaps indicative, but by no means definitive, of what other top colleges will think. One of my friends, currently at Yale, was wait-listed by WashU. My sister, though accepted by WashU, Duke, and the University of Pennsylvania, was wait-listed at Columbia and Northwestern. Another one of my friends was wait-listed or rejected by every school she applied to except for UChicago; then, in July, she received a call to attend Harvard instead.

Admissions is not completely random, but colleges look for different things in their applicants. If WashU did not accept you, it may be that WashU thinks you would not be a good fit for the school and would not be happy there; it does not mean that you were not academically qualified, etc. to attend, and it certainly does not mean you won’t be accepted by another (perhaps better?) college. You may have even been over-qualified. Who knows?

Even if April 1st rolls around and you’re unhappy with your college choices, there is no reason to be too upset. It is possible to be successful and receive a top-caliber education literally anywhere. I would even argue that some of my sister’s friends, who went to in-state public schools, are better off than my sister (at the University of Pennsylvania) in terms of internship and employment possibilities.

[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): Did some research, and I’m gay which I wrote about in my essay and I would think would be a bit of a hook.
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Scores, grades, gay
[] Weaknesses: Leadership, service
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Honestly I was kind of shocked when I saw, but I’ve been looking through these forums and keellota, who was much more qualified than I, was outright rejected! Many similar cases too, so I feel better. I don’t mean to take anything away from those who got in, though, congratulations.
[/li][/ul]General Comments: Good Luck!!

Congrats to all those who got accepted, I hope you go because WashU is a great school, truly underrated. To those waitlisted or rejected, no worries. The whole process is a crapshoot and you will find your school no matter what. The door is still open.
