WashU has a tendency to waitlist “overqualified” candidates as they do not want to give a spot to an applicant who is only applying to WashU because it is easy and is a safety.
So if you are confused by in your mind a “lesser” applicant being accepted over you this could be the reason. Or at least this is my understanding.

However, if you were waitlisted for this reason you can write them a letter saying that WashU really is your first choice and most likely they will accept you because you are indeed qualified. I do not know this for a FACT but it did happen to someone I know 3 years ago, so maybe it is still how they are doing it.

^Jeez louise, magic8ball. Have you been reading any of the other posts on a variety of threads? People are not waitlisted because they’re “overqualified.”

My son, and tons of others, were admitted with top stats. Their stats could get them into any school in the country, IF that school chose to accept them. Schools CAN be selective and don’t HAVE to take/CAN’T take every single person with top stats.

It’s ridiculous to claim that a person with top numbers is not accepted because they were “overqualified.” How do you then justify all the similarly “overqualified” applicants who WERE accepted? Ridiculous.

It also comes across as a little (quite?) arrogant to assume that somebody might be “lesser” because of a, let’s say, 32 ACT versus a 35, or a 2200 SAT versus a 2350, or whatever. All applicants are made up of a variety of strengths and weaknesses. Nobody I’ve seen on this accepted thread is “lesser” than anybody else. It’s getting a little old hearing all the sour grapes.

The people who were accepted were deemed “qaulified.” Plenty of the people who were waitlisted were likewise “qualified.” They weren’t “overqualified.” For some reason, the powers that be didn’t choose them. But it wasn’t because they were too good for Wash U. Jeez louise.

Decision: Waitlisted

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: no

[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): none
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: GPA w/ class rank, SAT II’s, dedication to a few EC’s (i.e. lots of hrs and yrs), All’s A’s in AP and Honors courses, Sr. Yr schedule
[] Weaknesses: Lack of leadership and awards in EC’s, No 2200+ SAT score. Didn’t show any demonstrated interest.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I didn’t stand out enough. But plain & simple: There were too many better and more deserving applicants than me.
[/ul]General Comments: WashU’s a nice school, but it was a throw-in app for me. I didn’t expect to get in so I’m fine with the decision. I saw that I was accepted to UCLA about 2 min. earlier. so I was too excited to feel the depression(?) of a waitlist (essentially a rejection) from WashU. UCLA has better weather and is financially more affordable for me. I won’t be accepting a spot on the waitlist and I’m ready to move on with the college decision season. Congrats to all who were accepted and I wish everyone the best of luck with the rest of their college app decisions!! :)

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Incredible amount of interest shown, very strong essays and recs, very personable, student-athlete
[] Weaknesses: class rank, lack of more extracurriculars and lack of relative success in math/science as compared to application pool
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I was accepted into the January Program, which I still don’t know the exact reason why, but nonetheless I’m in. I wish I could say why I was accepted over individuals who are much more qualified than I am, but I think it just comes down to relationship with the admissions office and how much they honestly like you as a person and think you can impact the school positively. If you have a perfect gpa, perfect ACT/SAT, and a well-rounded application, it seems they will reject you if you aren’t socially outgoing enough to be what they think is the ideal washu student.[/li][/ul]General Comments: Good Luck!!

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]

[] Strengths: extensive web design work, also art
[] Weaknesses: community service
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: showed plenty of interest, also I think I’m a great fit and have pretty good academics. part of the reason is probably because I didn’t apply for finaid but I’m still not sure whether washu has finaid for int’l students and I didn’t want to risk it…almost all the schools I applied to don’t.[/li][/ul]General Comments:

Decision: Waitlisted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2340 (800 Math, 740 English, 800 Writing 12 Essay)

[] Essays: Good, but I doubt they were great. I had them looked over by my counselor, four teachers, and a close friend.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Unsure, but both teachers knew me well and were on excellent terms with me.
[] Counselor Rec: Solid; my counselor has known me over four years.
[] Additional Rec: None.
[] Interview: None, but I hosted a session at our school with one of WUSTL’s representatives, which went well, although attendance was bare.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Nope.
[] Intended Major: Biological Sciences.
[] State (if domestic applicant): OH
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket:
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): None.
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Err…not too much. I’m a pretty generic Asian applicant as far as academics go, and relatively generic as far as extra-curriculars go, so there are the typical facets such as high test scores…
[] Weaknesses: As aforementioned, my essays were decent, maybe even good, but not great. I lacked strong extra-curricular focus and any stand-out facets.
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:On the whole, I’m a pretty generic Asian applicant, without any outstanding factors, which suits some schools, but may not be what WUSTL is looking for. I don’t begrudge them for their choice, which is perfectly reasonable in the light of how many of us (generic Asian applicants) probably applied.[/li][/ul]General Comments: Congratulations to all those who were accepted! Don’t let anyone tell you that you’re “lesser” in any fashion! “Overqualified” makes a poor excuse in the face of the complexities of the holistic process. To my fellow Waitlistees, don’t despair! And to those who were rejected, it doesn’t need to mean anything. Make of it what you will, but you will find what you are looking for. April 1st will bring you surprises; this isn’t the first time that WUSTL, or any other school, may have rejected an applicant who later went to HYPSM or another outstanding institution.
