[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Test Scores, ECs
[] Weaknesses: Cockiness
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I really don’t know. I was crying after I read the email[/li][/ul]General Comments: Good Luck!! I hate this school :(

Jmueller44, I don’t mean to pry, but your only other post on college confidential was a chance post to see if you could get into Illinois Engineering. You described your 31 on the ACT, and a class rank of 21/310, and pretty different ECs compared to what you described in this thread.

That’s quite a turn around you had in senior year. What do you attribute it to, and why do you think WUSTL would reject somebody with such decorated academic statistics and drastic high school improvement?

It wasn’t even an email.

Sorry… Just contributing to what matcat1116 said. It seems almost like this person is TRYING to make it look like WashU rejects “overqualified” applicants.

not to mention that he is an “immigrant from Alaska” I thought that Alaska was in the US! ■■■■■

Jmueller. I’m very surprised u got rejected. Seriously *** is up with washu? Like you’re perfect…gahh. I got waitlisted but I’m nowhere near as good as you are. I have a 2110 and. 3.5 gpa but that’s nowhere near u. :(. Well I’m sure you’ll get in somewhere good. As one of my good friends told me, it’s not the prestige that makes you.
Also, at least you tried :P

It was fake. I just wanted to feel like a ■■■■■ for one day. My real stats are on my other post and I got waitlisted

In looking over these results (omitting the ■■■■■,) the need for financial aid seems to be a huge predictor of the admission outcome. If you had really good stats, and didn’t get in, you may have just learned what “need aware admissions” really means.

I’m not so sure about that UT. Many of WashU’s peers have comparable FA commitments:

According to USNWR:

WashU offers 42% of their student body FA,
Brown = 44%
Cornell = 46%
UPenn = 43%
Duke = 42%
JHU = 46%
Columbia/Stanford = 50%

Really, only H (60%), MIT (63%) and Y (54%) have a much higher percentage of their student body on FA.

At most of these schools, at least half of the student body is full pay. It seems astonishing considering the expense of tuition.

As I’ve said in other posts, I think that at this admissions level even if you have the profile/stats, getting in is a matter of luck.

It still doesn’t mean that they couldn’t be sorting on the amount of aid needed. And I will certainly admit that it is an intuitive impression I get rather than a hard statistical test.

For people upset by my post, I’m extremely sorry.
Of course I am NOT admissions or anyone vaguely even CLOSE to admissions. This is something that I’ve just heard around and felt like I’d share to see what has been said. This isn’t coming directly from me it’s just a feeling I get and has been shared by many close to me (family and friends in similar situations).

No one can fully understand what goes on in an application process and sometimes decisions are made that don’t seem right, and, well, it sucks. I was just voicing my opinion on one way it can be looked at. It wasn’t meant to be anything regarded as fact or mean-spirited. Take it or leave it but it’s just a random side of the confusing and sometimes rather annoying admissions process.

Decision: Accepted

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: yes
[] Intended Major: Math
[] State (if domestic applicant): VA
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: private
[] Ethnicity: White (Jewish)
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: high
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): none
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: test scores, GPA
[] Weaknesses: not a lot of ECs outside of sports (which I don’t want to play at a varsity level in college), nothing extremely special about me; not a whole lot of interest (I applied for a scholarship and I have a cousin who attended WashU)
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: See my weaknesses above. I may be totally off on this but the fact that I’m Jewish could have hurt since WashU has a reputation of having a high Jewish population. I’m a cookie-cutter smart applicant. I thought applying as a female math major could have helped me (not that I did it just to help, I intend to major in math), but I guess not.
[/li][/ul]General Comments:
Congrats to all who were accepted! To those who were rejected or waitlisted, I offer you this: I know people who have been rejected/waitlisted from this school who have gone on to attend Ivy League schools (including Princeton and Yale). I know it sucks anyways, but don’t lost all hope. WashU is a hard school to get into. Don’t forget that.

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Test scores, maybe? And level of participation in school
[] Weaknesses: It’s hard for me to talk about myself in a positive way (Asian modesty…) as you can prob. see from the above subjective ratings… And whenever I do so it comes off a little phony. Also, grades.
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I can’t believe I wasn’t outright rejected with my grades. I’m just thankful I was waitlisted instead. [/li][/ul]General Comments: Good luck to everyone who was accepted/waitlisted/rejected. Whatever happens, happens.

General Comments
CONGRATS to all who got in! If you didn’t, don’t worry- it said in the letter that they got a record 29,000+ apps this year (if they get a 29-30% yield rate like they usually do, then they accepted 5,000-ish for an accept rate of only 17-18%, one of the toughest going).

[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Uncertain. I’ve gotten into UCLA and UMich and would like to think overqualified but so many just as if not more qualified applicants got in. I guess, like lots of people have said, it’s a crapshoot.[/li][/ul]General Comments: Nervous that this decision may be representative of decisions from other top tier schools…

I was waitlisted. I don’t feel like giving any of my stats, but I was accepted to both MIT and Caltech, so for those of you that were waitlisted, do not fret!
