Class of 2015 Results: Celebrate, Discuss, Support Here

If you are footing the bill, TweetyMom, by all means insist on her attending the college days and sleepover at both. I caved with my son over the girlfriend thing and we both regretted it, 3 years later.

Hi. This is my first post, although I’ve been lurking for a while. Congrats to all of your S’s and D’s on their acceptances. My S. is anxiously awaiting results this Wednesday, although he’s also received some good news up to this point. In case it’s helpful to others, here’s the list so far:

WUSTL- accepted (with Fin Aid)
RPI- accepted (with Fin Aid)
U of Michigan - accepted (Early Action)
Duke - likely letter

MIT - Rejected (oh well)
Northwestern- Waitlisted

Still waiting to hear from Brown, Cornell, HYP, as well as formally from Duke.

S. seems to be holding up well, although two most recent notifications were a reject and WL, so he’s trying not to let that bring him down. Wednesday should be …interesting. Good luck to everyone!

My son was also accepted at U of Michigan, WUSTL and waitlisted at NW
Waiting to hear from Hopkins, Duke, Cornell, Penn in Biomedical Engineering.
What is a likely letter? I have heard of these for sports recruitment but not for regular admissions. How often do these get sent out? Do all colleges use this as a vehicle?

Tiger – likely letters are sent by some Ivies to applicants they really want. These are not official acceptance letters, but people who get them can pretty much count on getting in. My understanding is that places like Harvard send out likely letters to just a few hundred of their 35,000 applicants – primarily academic superstars, exceptional URMs and/or athletes. Harvard, Brown Dartmouth, Columbia, Yale and Cornell send likelies. I don’t think Princeton does, and I’m unsure about UPenn.
An early write, which are sent out by LACs such as Amherst, Williams, Wesleyan and Swarthmore, are actual official letters of admission. These are sent to their top applicants, students the LACs believe will be competitive at the Ivies. They’re more of a PR thing – they want those students to look kindly upon them when they’re making their final decision.

Tiger - It sounds like our kids have similar academic interests. Mine applied primarily to engineering programs too. As the last poster said, not all schools give out likely letters, and it’s my understanding that the main reasons students get them are if they are URMs (often Questbridge applicants) or athletes. My son is neither of these things, and he hasn’t gotten likely letters anywhere besides Duke. I’m not sure why some schools give them out and others do not – just another one of the quirky, random things about this whole admissions process I guess.

Tweetymom:

Don’t let D’s relationship with her BF drive the decision. I think we have all been there and done that. The kids are young and will quickly realize that relationships change. If you can afford it, HM is the better school.

Based on articles and comments I have read here on CC and elsewhere, picking a school because of a BF or GF is the absolute worst reason to select a school. As other posters have indicated, relationships change and you may regret the decision if based on today’s relationship. Explore ALL of the options as you have a great list of schools to select from.

I’m from California and was accepted to MSU, U of O, Texas A&M, CSULB, Cal Poly SLO, SDSU and waitlisted to Berkeley and UCSB…

Committed to Cal Poly SLO!

My son applied mech eng-He is in Maryland College Park Scholars, RPI, Northeastern, U of Rochester, BU, Binghamton-and a few others we’re not considering-we’re waiting on the ivys and he was waitlisted to Lehigh
Ques-Anyone know anything bout Md and the Scholars program?
Hes serious bout U of Rochester but we think he has better options
Any comments on the programs and schools Thks

Albany is a BIG school what is her intended major-

pmcbts- was your ? addressed to me? I think I was the only one to talk about UAlbany so I will pretend it was. D is currently signed up to be a Medieval and Renaissance Studies (interdisciplinary) major as UA no longer has a Classics major. This is likely to change- her long term goal is to get her MS through the School of Library and Information Science school as a part of the 5 year program. Which means she can have any liberal arts undergrad degree. She will try to take some science undergrad, if not a minor, as library programs value science literacy. This may not work with the comp. sci. classes she’ll have to take to be done in 5 years.

There was a good story on public radio this morning about the admissions process. They interviewed and listened in to the admissions committee at Amherst. There were no names used, but I’m sure the applicants they discussed could identify themselves.

New to CC, so I hope I’m not off-topic. D just got into Wake, but while waiting to hear she visited one of her backups, the College of Charleston. She absolutely fell in love with it. I would love to hear pros/cons about both schools. (I know the academic rep of Wake is strong, yet she is drawn to the students/city of Charleston.) Thanks, everybody.

Son was accepted to Skidmore today - that makes five - Lafayette, Syracuse, Delaware, and Allegheny.

Decisions…decisions!

congrats to everybody!

My son applied to engineering at UIUC, Purdue, Rose-Hulman, Michigan, UW-Madison and Iowa State - accepted at all. He received a likely letter from Purdue, which was very encouraging (he was accepted ED), but then he did not receive any merit scholarships as OOS. From discussions with other parents, I guess I expected too much there, but I remain a bit confused on the purpose of likely letters.

Son accepted to Virginia Tech, UVA, William and Mary, James Madison University and University of Georgia. Very pleased to have so many wonderful choices! We’re instate in VA. Congrats everybody!

DD accepted to Standford, Yale, Dartmouth, Rice and many others. Tomorrow will be interesting. Very puroud of her.

DD accepted to Carleton, Kalamazoo, Kenyon, Reed, Seattle U & Swarthmore. Not @ Pomona. Waiting for Williams decision – arriving either way by 5 AM (PST). Also, so very proud of this young lady…! :)

Wow, such stars! Congrats to all. My D has heard from all her schools and is in to all: American, Clark, Conn, Dickinson and Goucher. Merit aid at all but one. Looks like it’s a tossup between American and Clark right now… we’ll see how the next week or two shakes out. I’m ready for her to make a decision so we can move on!

Congratulations too all. Good luck to ones waiting for the Ivy results today.

HS 2012ers on the other thread feel like it’s our turn “up to bat.”
