Class of 2016 - 15% acceptance rate

Northwestern… 15 percent acceptance rate and the most diverse class in 25 years

EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern University’s Office of Undergraduate Admission notified 4,895 applicants for the Class of 2016 of their acceptance via email over the weekend – marking a time when interest in Northwestern is at an all-time high with a record 32,065 applications.

… snip

The 32,065 applications were nearly double the number received as recently as 2005 (16,228), and rising applications mean, of course, that a lower percentage of students were admitted.

The 4,895 admitted students for the Class of 2016 changes the University’s acceptance rate from 18 percent last year to 15 percent this year.

It’s worth noting that since Theatre admissions are capped at NU, the admissions rate for Theatre may be considerably lower than the 15% mentioned in this article. I don’t think they release data for individual schools, but we have been told on two separate occasions that admission to the Theatre program is by far the most competitive in the Communications department.

Once again CONGRATULATIONS to those at CC admitted this year, and to those who weren’t, understand that this was the most competitive admissions cycle in the history of NU.

Wow, this makes me feel even more proud of my acceptance! So, incredibly happy.

We are visiting Northwestern this coming week. My daughter is wanting to do theater with the music theater concentration. She has a 4.2 GPA and got a 32 on her ACT. Anyone know if that would be competitive for admission?

@jeffandann -

I just looked at the stats on College Board (from last years’ class) and 87% of students at NU scored 30-36 on ACT last year, and the 50% range was 31-34, so your D’s stats are certainly in the range of admitted students. Also, from what I’ve seen on the Decisions threads (under “CC’s Top Universities”) most admitted NU students have an unweighted GPA over 3.8. D really enjoys the stimulation of being surrounded by such bright peers, and it sounds like your D would fit right in!

Enjoy your visit to Evanston next week!

jeffanddann- m D was waitlisted with same ACT and higher GPA. Waitlisted to me is that you could have taken x pile but you could have taken y pile and they’re interchangeable. So yes, the stats are fine but doesn’t mean she’ll get in

One can also get to the MT certificate program through the school of Music. My S was admitted as a BM in voice. I believe that they typically shoot for about 20 voice majors for freshman class. My S’s test scores were not terrific but GPA was well in the range. Echoing fourkidsmom, its a bit of a crapshoot. A male who was 3rd in my son’s class of 800 was not admitted while my son who was about 20-25 spot further down was admitted. I think in large part because my s was pursuing voice.

It’s interesting to hear that the Voice program might offer a slightly lower-stats path into the MT program. I hadn’t ever heard that before, and it might be especially useful information since I’ve been told that the cap on the number of Theatre students often results in that group needing HIGHER than NU-average stats to gain admissions.

Typically folks with test scores in the lower part of the 50% bracket (ACT 31-34) would have some sort of significant hook (recruited athlete, URM or something), so maybe a strong Voice audition is looked upon as a hook, at least for males (since NU strives for a 50/50 male/female ratio)?

This is a possibility that folks might want to consider if applying in future years.

Thanks for that thought!

Class of 2016 has record yield

[Class of 2016 has record yield - Campus - The Daily Northwestern - Northwestern University](http://www.dailynorthwestern.com/campus/class-of-2016-has-record-yield-1.2739814#.T7L9TsU8WSp)

The class of 2016 has broken records again, this time with an impressive yield for Northwestern.

… snip

This is the second year in a row in which NU has seen a 5 percent increase in yield. The class of 2015 had 38 percent of admitted students enroll, and the class of 2014 had 33 percent. Mills said such a large increase is rare.

“I haven’t seen very many instances of back-to-back years with a 5 percentage point increase in yield,” he said. “That’s more or less a once-in-a-career observation, and it happened again this year.”

Mills said NU will take about half a dozen students off the waitlist for Medill because its yield was lower than expected, but no one from the waitlist will be taken from any other school. Last year, no students were taken from NU’s waitlist, he said.

… snip

For the past two years, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions has cut the number of admitted students by 800 with the goal of having 2,025 students enroll.

… snip

Overall, he said the incoming class had higher levels of academic rigor in high school, as indicated by grade point averages, test scores, class ranks and Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate exams.

Mills said the yield was especially abnormal because though NU accepts higher achieving students, these students receive competing offers from other top-tier schools, placing NU’s yield in jeopardy. … cont’d

That might be what the article said but pcaz said her child was just admitted off the waitlist for SoC.

I mentioned this elsewhere, but apparently none of the VP freshman were among the 15 admitted to the MT program this year. I’m not sure if any VPs were among the 13 admitted sophomores. This may or may not be relevant in future years.

We knew several of the kids joining the NU 2016 Theatre class before they applied, and have recently been “introduced” to several more via the internet. The 2016 incoming class has professional credits including Broadway, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, NYC Solo Cabarets plus leads in many touring and regional shows, and hearing them on YouTube shows me an INCREDIBLY talented bunch!

Once again, congratulations to those coming next year and be prepared to be in amazing company!
