Class of 2016 graduate, heading to med school- need advice?

Hey folks!!
Congrats to everyone who’s heard good news and for those who didn’t, acceptances never determine worth. There’s always a school out there perfect for you.

If any of you guys have questions about NU, dorms, classes, professors, social life etc… Feel free to post with questions, I’ll be glad to help if I can. I had an account five years ago, but can’t remember it for the life of me, so I decided to make a new one.

A little about myself: Psych and Bio double major, Pre med track, currently taking a gap year, lived on campus for the first two years, did NOT rush, but have a lot of friends who did… yada yada. Not really sure what else to say. But ask away

How much more difficult was it to double major AND be premed compared to other students around you? I really want to double major in biology and maybe english (just cause I really like it) and was wondering what is was like? Thanks!

Being a double major when both of your majors are in the same school is pretty easy. All it takes is knowing what you want to major in, being aware of how many classes you’ll need, and generally which quarters those classes are offered. Most students would say doubling major is easy depending on the two majors and your scheduling and planning ability. If the subjects flow well, where the materials often overlap or repeat, then it works out well. If they don’t, then I’m sure you’re double majoring because you like those two subjects, so it still works out

For me, majoring in bio and psych worked out really well because many of the prerequisites in bio counted as the five additional courses you’ll need for the psych major. In that case, I was lucky that my majors were so intertwined. Now, when you consider the fact that most premed courses are also bio major courses, it’s easy to see why many people double major in bio and psych. From my perspectives, most people I knew had double majors or were also working on getting certificates. Obviously, bio and psych was common, so was psych and English, cognitive science and bio, Econ and Bio, etc…

One of my really good friends was a bio and English double major. She came in and started the premed track freshman year (like most freshmen) with the intention that she’d only be majoring in English. By the time junior year came around, she added Bio because she had already completed most of the bio major due to being premed. She only needed five more classes (upper level bio classes are easier and more interesting than the weed out classes), so she thought and I completely agree that it would be foolish not to just finish out the bio major. I think the biggest thing with this combination is starting your English major from fall quarter freshman year, so that you have more wiggle room when it comes to scheduling. Many Science classes are sequenced and many English classes require prerequisites from other English classes. The earlier you start, the easier it is to double major.

All of this doesn’t mean you must double major or you have to unless you’re weird. It’s just that one of the benefits of the quarter system is just how easy it is to double major, so many use this benefit.
