Class of 2016! ( HS class 2012)

Class of 2016! (Hs class 2012)

Want to gather the new admits for OWU. My daughter was just admitted
Some stats: 4.0, 28 act, in depth extracurriculars, dance and cheer, really good common app essay.

Applied early October and admitted November 14th

She received generous merit aid and was named a Leland F and Helen Schubert scholar. Will participate in scholarship competition for more $.

Just curious about the other admits. She needs to visit this school but from word of mouth and internet sites, she likes it.

My S was also admitted about a week and a half ago. He will also compete at the scholarship competition. We visited on spring break last year and of course it snowed that day! It was very pretty though. We really liked it. Don’t let the food court in the student center scare you off. It is quite small. But the dining hall in the dorms is much better. Plus they have about 4 restaurants they vote on each year that are also a part of the food plan. Then they can go “out” to eat every once in a while. My son also sat in on a class while we were there.

His choice is between OWU and OSU and let me tell you-they seem to be complete opposites! He will have to decide what is a better fit for him!

I just got my acceptance today. I have a 26 ACT and 3.77 unweighted, 4.2 weighted GPA. I was also named a Leland F and Helen Schubert scholar and will compete for more money.

Congratulations AlexandraValo-are you in state or out of state?

NervousNellie1,

Thanks!

I’m out of state. The only thing about this college that worries me is the cost. I got half of the tuition from a merit scholarship, so hopefully with need based aid (which I qualify for tons of), outside scholarships I’m applying for and competing for more money, I’ll get enough money.

What are you and your son planning on for covering the tuition? Can you guys afford to pay some, or is he doing his best for scholarships?

Nervous, my D is also considering OSU. She is waiting for Lawrence decision but OWU is very high on her list right now. So far it is a toss up between OSU, OWU and Wittenberg. She will hear from a few more schools in the next couple weeks and then Kenyon and Grinnell in March.

But, I have a feeling, unless others come through with big $, OWU will remain high on the list.

AlexandraValo-
My son got the same scholarship which is a HUGE help. He will compete January 29 at the competition. And we will see what we can get from the need-based stuff. We are waiting to see what community scholarships are available-should be coming out soon at his guidance office. He is chosing between OWU & OSU. He has been admitted to OSU also and has applied to the Honors & Scholars program there. I know he wasnts OSU more. I don’t know what his decision will be if he doesn’t get into the H & S program.

With the scholarship $ already from OWU, that puts it about where OSU without any scholarship $. We won’t hear from them on that for a while.

What do you want to study? He wants to do Bio-chem possibly pre-med. I am thinking OSU would offer him more opportunities if that is what he really wants to do.

mspearl-Is your daughter going to go see OWU? Has she been to the others? Our guidance office has a “tool” that lets you see what the schools require (GPA, test scores, etc.) compared to where you are. OWU and OSU seemed to have higher requirements than Wittenburg and Kenyon. I don’t know about the others. If she is looking for a more selective school, I would stick with OWU or OSU.

Congratulations to everyone’s kids! I just wanted to say that I was really impressed by Ohio Wesleyan last year when S1 went for Schubert competition in Jan. My S wasn’t so happy that they had to compete for more merit awards, but it’s a small price to pay for a stellar education at a private LAC like OWU. He did end up being offered more (a Founders was “stacked” with Schubert) and it was high on his list up until the end. The cost to attend would have been less than our instate schools (21K yr.) The campus reminded us both of Oberlin’s campus with the historic limestone buildings. It’s a very nice school and we both came away thinking that we could definitely see him attending OWU. They have so many strong depts. and programs (sciences and art were my S main concern and both programs are top notch). He did end up attending our state flagship in the end (VA), but I have to say that I am a huge fan of Ohio Wesleyan!

Nervous, she was scheduled a few weeks ago but we had to cancel because she was sick. OWU is very high on her list though lately she has accidently fallen in love with Kenyon. Right now, I see OWU, Osu, Wittenberg and Kenyon on the off chance she gets admitted to be the top choices. She is also considering Lawrence and Earlham if she is accepted. Sigh going to be a long winter.

My daughter also got accepted to OWU and has turned in her deposit. It was her first choice school and can’t wait to go. She also got the Schubert scholar and will compete in January for more money. She plans to major in zoology and environmental sciences. She has a 4.0 unweighted GPA and a 31 on the ACT. She also has taken 14 credits at the local university while in high school.

Other students from her high school that have gone to OWU say that the scholarship money is great so I’m hoping that is true since she already committed to the school.

I got admitted to OWU as an international student. I have a 3.9 unweighted GPA, 2100 SAT and all A grades, 7 AP classes by the time I graduate and many extra curriculars. I was awarded a more-than-half tuition scholarship and named a Leland F. and Helen Schubert Scholar.

I also got invited to the Schubert Scholarship event to compete for additional scholarship and honors program. I was looking this event up and know it is an on-campus event. As I am an international student, do I have to fly to the US from Europe to compete for more money? Do you know of any previous international student who has participated in the event maybe online?

@intlgirl
I’m an international student but I just submitted my application recently.
Actually I am surprised that you chose EA…according to the website international students’ deadlines are Jan. 1st and Mar. 1st, so I wonder how did you get the result before the January deadline?
I submitted via EA2 and I am worried because I didn’t notice the instruction saying EA2 was opened only for US students…should I email the admissions office?
Thanks!

I have the same question as Lyra1994, I am an international student and also applied for Early Action 2 and haven’t received any kind of mail from Ohio Wesleyan confirming the submission of my application. Can someone please shed some light on this topic? Thanks a bunch.

I’m an international student as well, and I just received an acceptance notification through my e-mail. For answering questions above, I actually received some emails from OWU. They asked me to send the third recommendation letter and second essay for my application. And they told me that my application has been completed and ready for review. So, if you didn’t receive any email, you should check with the college. :)

i was also admitted to OWU today and received the Schubert scholarship. but i don’t think im gonna compete because I received the invitation so late.

My daughter was admitted in early Dec. She has a 3.5 GPA and a 28 on her ACT. Her EC’s are excellent, probably the high point of her application. We sent her deposit in December as well. She is going to play lacrosse. Love to hear from any other parents of lacrosse players!

Ohio Wesleyan University class of 2016 leggo!!

I have a question about the January Scholarship competition.

What is required for this competition? What are the kids competing for? And finally, how many “win” additional money?

OWU is a VERY high contender for my D for next year but we will need to get her to get scholarship money, as we won’t qualify for financial aid directly.

Please answer! Thanks.

In my son’s admittance letter, he was notified immediately that he was named a Schubert Scholar and recieved the Leland F. & Helen Schubert Scholarship. They invited him to return for the Schubert Scholarship competition to compete for more scholarship $. It can range from an additional $1,000 to a full scholarship. He received an additional $10,000 ($2,500/year) from the competition. It was a Founders Scholarship. Here is a link that tells you about their scholarships:
