Objective:[ul]
[] ACT: 34
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.8
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): N/A
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): US History (5), no others because I transferred to a school that doesn’t to APs.
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): none
[] Senior Year Course Load: 6 classes per semester (average at my school), all academic, including BC calc
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): none
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Creative writing club (Co-President), GSA, Debate team (co-captain), writing center tutor, facilitator for my school’s Ethics program, and wing guide (kinda like a junior RA in my dorm)
[] Job/Work Experience: a summer internship at a state senator’s office
[] Volunteer/Community service: Over 600 hours since the start of Sophomore year. I teach science classes to local kids through a program at my school.
[] Summer Activities: community service
[] Essays: I was very proud of them. My long common app essay is about how I compulsively correct people’s grammar and my extracurricular essay was about community service and how it’s important to me to help the kids in my old, horrible public school system after I escaped.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Pretty good, I think?
[] Counselor Rec: Probably pretty generic; she had a lot of students.
[li] Additional Rec: I got one from the advisor for my community service who was also my advisor in a research project last year, so I think she knew me really well.
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes.
[] Intended Major: Undecided.
[] State (if domestic applicant): IL
[] School Type: small, highly competitive public residential school
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: Lower middle class? I don’t know a number.
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Probably my essays
[] Weaknesses: My ACT science score (30), lack of any hook
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: Because they liked me? It’s a crapshoot, but I’m happy.[/li][/ul]General Comments: Really excited, but mostly I just hope I get enough financial aid that I can afford it.

Waitlisted

SAT II: Math II 710, US History and World History 750
Weighted GPA: 4.2
APs: 5 on calc ab, psych, english language, world history and 4 on art history and us history
Super disappointed that I got waitlisted. I thought I had a chance :(

[] IB (place score in parenthesis): n/a
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Calculus BC, AP Biology, Lab for AP Bio, AP English Literature, AP Psychology, Chamber Choir, Computer Literacy

[] Job/Work Experience: none
[] Volunteer/Community service: Volunteered at an equine therapy program for the disabled over the summer, actress/assistant director in years of VBS programs at local church
[] Essays: Common app was on my differing strong interests in the concreteness of math/science and the spontaneity of theatre… balance of perspective, fixed and fluid outlook, yadda yadda yadda. I really struggled with this essay, probably writing a good 20 versions on different topics, and while I was somewhat pleased with the final result, it’s surely nothing spectacular.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Pretty good.
[] Counselor Rec: Never read, but it’s his first year, so.
[] Additional Rec: n/a
[] Interview: n/a
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes

[] State (if domestic applicant): MD
[] School Type: Public

[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): Odd first gen situation – my mother didn’t go to college and my father is absent (and consequently not shown on commonapp)
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: GPA, scores to a certain extent, potentially my first gen situation
[] Weaknesses: Nothing particularly standout (essay, ECs, awards, etc)
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Not sure exactly (this is an odd question, I feel like anything I say will come off wrong written) but I’m happy regardless.[/li][/ul]General Comments: Hooray!

[/ul][ b]Reflection**[ul]
[] Strengths: Im thinking maybe essay, ACT scores, and the variety of extracurriculars I participate in.
[] Weaknesses: I thought my work load for the year might have been seen as a little bit light, but I honestly took the courses that interested me, not necessarily those I thought colleges wanted to see. I dont know, maybe Wesleyan liked that though; some of the courses I took/am taking this year are kinda artsy
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I think they saw that I am a well-rounded person through my activities and interests, as well as through my CommonApp essay.

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: test scores, GPA, rank
[] Weaknesses: boring extracurriculars/awards
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: boring, common extracurricular stuff[/li][/ul]General Comments: Not my top choice, but it still seems like an awesome school. I will probably be accepting a place on the waiting list.

SAT >2300, all SAT II > 750, Top 5%, National Merit Finalist, Presidential Scholar Candidate, AP Scholar with Distinction, Full IB diploma student. No FA needed, Varsity team 4 years. Tons of volunteer work. some state awards and leaderships. visited Wes campus in summer, there were lower stats students from my school got into Wes before according to Naviance.

… a bit surprised…well, maybe Wes has too many high stats applicants this year?
Congrats to all who got in! For those got waitlisted and rejected: The world is NOT end…keep going breathing…good news is coming
I received Carleton College’s big fat envelope today, which offered me NMF Scholarship and a free plane ticket for visit So I am admitted by #6 LAC, but waitlisted by #12 LAC (according to US News Ranking). I guess college admissions really are a crapshoot.

cool5s - you are right, this college admissions game is a crapshoot and quite a looong game. Maybe you are geographically undesirable and yet, geographically desirable to Carleton. Congrats on that admission.

I wonder if Wes might be playing the numbers game trying to boost their selectivity rating as pointed out in a past NYT article, “a college striving to look selective takes fewer students than it actually needs, reports that number in its admission-statistics profile, then admits from its wait list.”

Wesleyan is 5 and 20 points lower on the SAT range, 1 point higher on ACT, and is 10% more selective. splitting hairs here, really… the acceptance rates are so low, that it is most definitely a crapshoot. remember, these schools (LACs) are building a class, not just selecting the best applicants. if they have already accepted four people from minnesota who play french horn, the fifth one isn’t gonna get in. once you have stats in range, it’s simply a matter of whether admissions thinks you fit into their master plan to have a diverse and academically strong class. nothing against you or your skills.

as for waitlisting, Wesleyan overenrolled last year but a lot (about 60-70) so I am sure they are going to be more cautious this year. they are still aiming for a class size of 745, but I think they’d rather undershoot a bit this year and admit a few off the waitlist then have a class of 800+ again. I don’t think it’s a matter of gaming the system in this specific instance.

Congrats to all those accepted and good luck to those waitlisted
