[] EC Short Answer: About my passion for karate and how it’s so integral to my identity now.
[] Other:
[] Teacher Recommendation #1:My math teacher. I had him for Algebra Two and Precalc. He loves me. I actually got to read it, he said lot’s of nice things about me. Specific examples included. Great.
[] Teacher Recommendation #2: My AP Lang teacher. She loves me. I got to read that one too. It was beautifully written and she talked about my love of learning. Amazing.
[] Counselor Rec: I’m guessing it was really good. She’s been such an advocate for me in other situations.
[] Additional Rec: My karate instructor and employer. I got to read it. It was hilarious. Great.

Reflection[ul] It was a crazy couple of months.
[] Strengths: I was proud of my essays. I know that my recommendations were all really great. My interview went well.
[] Weaknesses: Low test scores. Didn’t send SATII. Not enough AP classes. No major awards.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected:
[] What would you have done differently?:[/ul]

Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc:

Smartalic34 is correct. No one likes the idea of adding more anxiety to the admissions process, but the fact is, the Wesleyan adcom can only guess what its yield is going to be, given the spike it experienced last year. Relying more heavily on the w/l is a standard response following an over admit.

Decision: Accepted

[] Income Bracket: changed a lot over the past couple of years
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): nothing really
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: I think I came across in my interview as really interested in the school. I’ve been skating for eight years I’m really dedicated to it, which most people think is a strength. also, I’ve had the same job at an ice cream shop since last October
[] Weaknesses: not that many extracurriculars (because I’ve been so busy with skating), SATIIs aren’t as high as I wanted them to be
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I made it clear that Wesleyan was one of my top choices and I think I had a strong essay
[/ul]General Comments: I’m not sure if I’m going to go to Wesleyan because it’s only 45 minutes from my house (my parents are thrilled about this, but I’m not so sure) and I might not get a good aid package next year. But I’m super excited to have gotten in since I haven’t gotten the answer I wanted from some of my other schools.

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2320 (740 CR, 790 W, 790 M)
[] ACT: Didn’t send, but was 34
[] SAT II: 740 Chem, 770 Math II, 780 US History
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 4/550

[] IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP English Lit, AP European History, AP Statistics, AP French, AP Biology, Honors Physics, Honors Forensic Science
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National French Contest top 10 placement in grades 9, 10, and 11. Otherwise, none-- some local/state things for piano, some school awards, but nothing of true merit
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Club tennis 9-11, varsity tennis 10-11, French Club (treasurer junior year, president senior year), NHS, National French Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta (vice-president senior year), 10 years of piano with various local and state competitions.
[] Job/Work Experience: Worked at an ice cream store for approx. 15 hours/week from spring of junior year to winter of senior year
[] Volunteer/Community service: About 25 hours a year at YMCA and other random places, nothing special.
[] Summer Activities: Tennis, work.
[] Essays: I thought it was pretty good, and so did those who read it-- it was about how much I love mowing lawns, despite how atypical that is for a teenage girl, and how even though I’m not creative, mowing gives me a chance for some weirdly pure self-expression.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Didn’t see it, but I imagine it was pretty positive. Teacher (US History) and I weren’t exceptionally close, but I did well in his class and we got along well.
[] Counselor Rec: I had never met my counselor before she wrote the rec, so I have no idea. She just did it based off of my resume.
[] Additional Rec: From my calculus teacher, didn’t see but it was probably pretty strong.
[] Interview: none.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: No.
[] Intended Major: Undecided
[] State (if domestic applicant): North Carolina
[] School Type: Large, fairly competitive suburban public
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: >$200,000
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Nothing
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Essay, stats
[] Weaknesses: Extracurriculars
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I honestly have no idea… it looks like many people far more qualified than I were waitlisted. Geography may have played a part for me, I guess?[/li][/ul]General Comments: Congrats to all who were admitted, and to those waitlisted/rejected as well… everyone seems to be very intelligent and talented and I’m sure you’ll have plenty of chances for happiness and success wherever you end up. I don’t think I’m going to attend Wes-- I’ve gone back and forth between wanting to go to a liberal arts school and somewhere bigger and the scale has been tipping in the latter direction as of late. Duke and William & Mary are my top two, so hopefully they work out. I still think Wesleyan is a really cool place, though, and definitely haven’t ruled it out completely.

Additional Rec: APUSH teacher/ Mock trial coach. Knows me very well, wrote FANTASTIC letter. Also from my AP Bio teacher, also very good.

oh ya, accepted!

i’ve been waiting for years to post that on cc.

waitlisted at Wesleyan, but accepted as an Early Write to Swarthmore and Smith (with merit), Pomona, Mt. Holyoke (merit), Bryn Mawr (merit), Brandeis, Scripps, and Mills (merit). I was also a legacy and my stats were in range for Wes. Very weird that I would get into Swat and Pomona but not to Wesleyan.

Actually, not that surprising. When you’re dealing with schools that have 15-25% acceptance rates, nothing is a guarantee. Yes, Swarthmore and Pomona have slightly higher stats and slightly lower admission rates, but the differences are fairly small in the grand scheme of things. Congrats on your numerous acceptances, but when you’re dealing with the top highly selective LACs (or top universities) it’s a crapshoot.

Decision: Accepted, Early Write

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): N/A
[] ACT: 32 – one sitting, junior year
[] SAT II: 790 (Lit), 730 (Bio), 710 (USH)

[] Volunteer/Community service: Volunteer 150 hours in Pediatrics at local hospital, other misc stuff
[] Essays: Good
[] Teacher Recommendation: Great
[] Counselor Rec: Good
[] Additional Rec: N/A
[] Interview: On Campus, really comfortable

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Intended Major(s): Bio/anthro (pre-med)
[] State (if domestic applicant): CA
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Private, all-girls Catholic
[] Ethnicity: Hispanic (Mexican-American)
[] Gender: F
[] Income bracket (if applicable): That middle ground where we don’t qualify for FA but really can’t afford $60k+/year
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Nothing outstanding, just a solid student
[] Weaknesses: I love this school, visited twice from CA. Totally see myself here, but really don’t think we can afford the COA
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Accepted: Tufts, Wesleyan, Fordham (full-tuition scholarship), Villanova, Loyola Chicago ($14k scholarship)
W/L: None
Rejected: Yale, Duke, USC
Waiting: Amherst, Georgetown

[/ul]General Comments: Love -love-love Wes, but not sure it makes sense to go here versus Fordham @ $15k/year (room & board only due to full tuition scholarship).

And to add to what smartalic34 says, it’s not a crapshoot in a “the universe is totally random and indifferent” kind of way, but it’s a crapshoot in terms of you having no control over what they’re looking for and what stands out in any given year at any given highly selective LAC.

You could hire a single team of world-class application readers and pool their expertise for all of those colleges listed and come up with the same exact outcomes…because maybe Smith, Bryn Mawr and Mt. Holyoke are in desperate need of a mumbletypeg champion while Wes happens to be overloaded with mumbletypeggers(?) on campus and in the applicant pool (word of mouth travels fast in the mumbletyverse) and, while Swarthmore already has a decent mumbletypeg student base, maybe they just built a new mumbletypeg research facility so they want even more people who will put their fingers on the pulse of the action. The imaginary pooled application reader team would have one singular overall opinion of you but they will still see you as a great student who will shine in some environments and be unsatisfied in others where the super team of application readers is more intent of finding more students who are like the applicants in a different stack of folders on another table.

The outcomes listed above wouldn’t make sense if the application file was the only variable and if admissions officers didn’t factor in the specific needs of their respective employers – and if they didn’t rely on their expertise as to which kinds of applicants perform best in their specific environment. There’s so much more data that gets weighed and balanced beyond the application file…and not nearly enough spaces to accommodate all of the worthy applicants…that it becomes something of a crapshoot when viewed from the prism of an applicant – but it’s a highly informed and deliberate crapshoot. The Wes admission team may have known exactly what it was doing by not offering admission – while being every bit as impressed and charmed as the Swat and Pomona admission teams were.

Decision: Accepted

[ *] Why you think you were accepted:I really have no clue

D’yer Maker: I absolutely agree, every college admissions team is looking to build a specific class based on a wide variety of factors. I am not arrogant enough to believe I was owed a spot at any of the colleges I applied to, and may just not have been a match for what Wesleyan was looking for. I’m disappointed that Wesleyan is not in my future, but really thrilled I was accepted at such wonderful institutions, including my two top picks!

[*] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: Perhaps they needed more science-y people.

@dramamine - Congratulations on Wesleyan!!! I got waitlisted too like so many on this thread (is it just because it is a nice school that doesn’t want to send rejection letters?), but like you, I think I’ll end up at Macaulay Honors at Hunter. In my parents’ circles, it’s not “prestigious” enough, but I think it looks like a phenomenal place and you can’t beat a full-free 4 year ride plus a generous stipend to study abroad.
