Class of 2016 (regular decision)

<p>My D was waitlisted</p>

<p>2150SATs/4.04GPA
she is homeschooled, but outside grades to back up the GPA
Killer essay on working at a dog rescue run out of our house that started when she was 5</p>

<p>Literally hundreds of hours of ECs, volunteering, shadowing, working, etc. in her field of interest.</p>

<p>I guess it’s not really surprising, Animal Behavior is limited to 15 acceptances/year, but when we visited, and they told us that her ECs/demonstrated interest in the field, would not benefit her in any way, we knew that it would be a crapshoot. I do think it is a shame though, that someone with a life long demonstrated interest in a field might have less of a chance then someone else with better grades/scores or a slightly better flair for writing.</p>

<p>tozubri, if this is her top choice and she really wants to go, then this is the time to start convincing them. They will call plenty of people off the waitlist, you just want to make sure she is one of them. I would start faxing them her the mid semester grades, her accomplishments, a heartfelt letter about why she wants to go there, and any other things that could help. So many people just give up and wait, I hope your daughter goes for it!</p>

<p>Congratulations, esecro! Lehigh is a great school, you will be so happy there. Of course, by Monday you will have gotten into CMU too, so there’s a tough choice.</p>

<p>Yay!</p>

<p>Thanks, dawglb. That is very specific and informative. Great place to look.</p>

<p>Waitlisted. =/
That was the fourth school I have been waitlisted at, not a great feeling.</p>

<p>Reflection</p>

<pre><code>Strengths: Courseload, Supplement Essay, ACT scores
Weaknesses: ECs (literally killing my chances everywhere), Math
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: As I said earlier, my supplements were really personal. I think I stood out as a unique person with some of my odder hobbies (closet geek hobbies) and my genuine interest in contributing to society.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: UCSB Waitlist: Wesleyan Rejected: UCLA (Will update as list grows.)
</code></pre>

<p>General Comments: I liked the supplement a lot. I wish some of my other schools had something similar.</p>

<p>My S received letter today re:Waitlisted. I was surprised --but not after reading all of these posts! His stats were similar to those here… 2150 SAT, national merit finalist, 1st in his class, strong subjects with AP courses and perfect GPA-- (applied for neuroscience major/ PA resident) however he does not have a strong EC list AT ALL (something I have been bugging him about for 4 years!)… He got acceptance to Colgate today and also Allegheny with trustee scholarship a while back… But we just got back from visit to UVM and he LOVED it there… (was accepted there with 11k/yr scholarship plus 10k/yr national merit plus Honors college)… I had already paid his acceptance deposit there when we got the bucknell info. Interesting!<br>
I am going to have to agree with another poster above-- maybe you end up in the place you belong!</p>

<p>Still… Sorry for all who are feeling disappointed --and congratulations to those happily accepted!!</p>

<p>Glancing through this thread, I definitely have the lowest stats out of all of you…</p>

Job/Work Experience: One summer job as a cashier
Volunteer/Community service: 40 hours of community service at the local library; peer tutoring; tour guide on campus
Summer Activities: None aside from employment
Essays: My personal essay was (I hate to sound snooty) really damn good. I wrote about an award at my school that I wanted more than anything in the world, and how hard I worked for four years to get it, only to end up losing. I wrote about how, although it initially shattered my world, trying to win it had actually helped me build a new world for myself, how it had made me a stronger person, and how not winning it had shown me that I never needed it in the first place. I also wrote my three supplemental essays on my Harry Potter obsession, how clumsy I am, and how my dream is to be a Saturday Night Live cast member. I had fun with my essays, really. My optional essay was about how swimming served as a metaphor for my life and the way I lived.
Teacher Recommendation: Two good letters, one from my Spanish Language teacher, and one from one of my English teachers
Counselor Rec: Good
Additional Rec: One letter of recommendation from another of my English teacher, who is a Bucknell alum (grad school)
Interview: My counselor came to my school in October to speak about Bucknell, and I had a brief 10-minute interview; she told me at the end of it that I “certainly appear to be the ideal Bucknell student,” whatever that means.</p>

<p>Other
Ethnicity: White
Gender: M
Major: Elementary Education
Income Bracket: Upper-Middle Class
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Honestly, not really anything, aside from the aforementioned alumni rec. Maybe because I’m a male going for education?</p>

<p>Reflection
Strengths: Humanities, extra-curriculars, community involvement, interest displayed, essays
Weaknesses: GPA, standardized test, lack of/low class rank, relatively low course load, math/sciences
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: In all honesty? I have no damn idea. See general comments.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: Arcadia, Drexel, UPitt, Texas Christian, Suffolk, West Chester, Temple; Rejected: Northeastern</p>

<p>General Comments: I think my acceptance is a good example of how much goes into selecting who gets accepted and who doesn’t. As I’ve mentioned before, my grades are nowhere near what Bucknell wants, nor have they ever been; my highest GPA in my high school career was a 3.94, and that was with three AP bumps. My Math SAT1 didn’t even break 600. I believe I got in through a combination of strong essays, my community involvement, my recommendations, and the strong interest I showed. I kept in regular contact with my counselor throughout the year, letting her know how things have been going with school and any updates to my application.</p>

<p>Bucknell is my dream school, and I worked my ass off for months on my application. My grades, which I thought would prevent me from getting in, ultimately ended up not factoring into the decision too much. I see some of you are National Merit Scholars, have near-perfect SATs, are class presidents and are captains on three sports. Why did they accept me, and not the rest of you far more qualified applicants?</p>

<p>I don’t have a damn clue. I’m so sorry :(</p>

<p>Were any of you guys accepted into the School of Management? I’m applying to Bucknell next year and I would like to see what your stats are like. Thanks.</p>

<p>Decision:Waitlisted

<p>Reflection[<em>] Strengths: GPA, SAT, and Course Rigor[</em>]
Weaknesses: SATII scores and lack of awards/ hook
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:No idea why they waitlisted her! BU makes a big deal out of legacy applicants; and her stats are WELL within their parameters.
Rejected: Stanford, WUSTL
WL at Rochester and Lehigh
Waiting on Cornell and UPenn.</p>

<p>My son is accepted!
His SAT is 2330 Math: 800!
Although Bucknell is a NICE school, I am not sure he will altimately end up there. Out of the schools we heard from already 6 acceptences and 1 waitelisted (Wesleyan).
He recieved two full scholarships from state schools: Rutgers (our state) and University of Maryland. It is VERY difficult to part with a full scholarship!
As of now, only Princeton can do that…we are waiting…</p>

<p>Welcome to all the new members of Bucknell’s class of 2016. Can’t wait for you to get to campus and join your new family. See you in August!</p>

[</em>] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted - Drexel, Stony Brook, Northeastern, CMU - Tepper, Barnard. Rejected - MIT. </p>

<p>[/ul]General Comments:
I’m pretty happy! Especially since I also got the Presidential Fellowship. I’m just worried that its a littler rural.</p>

<p>Congratulations on your acceptance to the Tepper School of Business at CMU, waitingforivy. You forgot to change the header, but congratulations none the less. I’m assuming you got into Bucknell, also. Good luck tomorrow.</p>

<p>House 23 – when the acceptance rates get low, some head scratcher decisions occur. My D got accepted RD at Bucknell with lower stats than you. You got a likely letter OOS at UVA which is incredibly difficult to do. My D (OOS but a UVA legacy which puts you at in-state level for admissions purposes) gets rejected at UVA. Who knows why? At Bucknell, maybe it was that she was a girl who wanted to do engineering and was from the western US. </p>

<p>Want to trade your UVA spot for her Bucknell spot? I still can’t believe she didn’t get in at UVA as a legacy.</p>

<p>I have read through the posts and there does not seem to be any consistency to the admissions process at Bucknell. There are many, many qualified applicants who got wait listed and one sticks out in particular that was accepted and he writes that he “has no idea how he got in”. Comparing the stats listed, I would agree but am happy for him. Kids who are “double legacys”, kids with outstanding credentials are wait listed. One writes that their school teacher is a Bucknell alum and called and gave a recommendation to someone the teacher knows at the school. Another writes that his ACT was a 28, with a 2.98 GPA/4.0 , and he was accepted! His teacher was an alum who wrote a letter. Am beginning to wonder, is it WHO you know at the school, not WHAT you know. My D is also a legacy there, with very good credentials, and was rejected. I have become very disillusioned with the school and wonder at the intergrity of their admissions personnel. Best of luck to all who were accepted!</p>

<p>^tiredparent123. This is your first post. Have you been on CC for awhile or only recently? </p>

<p>If you read other threads around this time, you will find the same thing. Students with perfect SAT’s rejected from numerous schools (not just Harvard). Students who seem to have the stats or above, legacies, NMS winners being rejected or waitlisted.</p>

<p>I do not understand admissions, but I do know you can not count on anything or be sure with a selective school. My D 2 was waitlisted at a top LA school her brother attended although she had above their average stats. Yet she was accepted at an Ivy.</p>

<p>So I do not think you should question the integrity of the admissions staff at BU. Bucknell’s decisions make about as much sense as the other selective schools. We do not walk in their shoes.</p>

<p>I do not blame you for being annoyed at their decision re your D. I was very annoyed at my son’s school for waitlisting my D1.</p>

<p>I recall that Bucknell “fills buckets” in admissions. That means that student are considered for specific programs or “undecided” based on the choices made on the application. it may be that some of these very qualified kids had lots of competition for the programs they desired.</p>

<p>Decision: Accepted</p>

<p>Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): M:670 W:710 CR:700
ACT: 32, but I didn’t submit it (I took it pretty late and already spent a lot of money sending my SAT scores out)
SAT II: US History:740 Math II:690 (didn’t submit those either, also took those late)<br>
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): probably 3.8 or 3.9… my school does weighted (mine was 4.4)
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 3 out of 331
AP (place score in parenthesis): I only took US History last year and didn’t take the test (long story)
IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
Senior Year Course Load: AP Photography, AP Calc AB, AP Euro, AP French V, AP English, AP Chem
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Finalist</p>

<p>Subjective:
Extracurriculars: School musical all four years, color guard, part-time job (12-16 hours/week), knitting club (which I started with my friends), French Club (president), GATE (gifted program) since elementary school
Volunteer/Community service: volunteering at my community library, lots of volunteer work through NHS
Summer Activities: None really other than band camp
Essays: The Common App ones were pretty good, but nothing amazing. I loved my ones for the supplement, though.
Teacher Recommendation: Pretty good, but they didn’t make me cry or anything.
Counselor Rec: Didn’t see it, but I’m my counselor’s top student (there’s four different counselors at my school) so I assume it was good.
Additional Rec: N/A
Interview: N/A</p>

<p>State (if domestic applicant): PA
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: Middle-class
Hooks: none</p>

<p>Reflection:
Strengths: Academic stuff (SAT, GPA, course load) and extracurriculars
Weaknesses: Didn’t show a huge amount of interest (only visited once, didn’t do an interview) and no hook
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I thought Bucknell was a good match for me admissions-wise.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted - Mercyhurst, Syracuse, BostonU, CMU. Waitlisted - Kenyon, William & Mary. Rejected - Swarthmore, Brown, Davidson.</p>
