• Essays: My personal essay was (I hate to sound snooty) really damn good. I wrote about an award at my school that I wanted more than anything in the world, and how hard I worked for four years to get it, only to end up losing. I wrote about how, although it initially shattered my world, trying to win it had actually helped me build a new world for myself, how it had made me a stronger person, and how not winning it had shown me that I never needed it in the first place. I also wrote my three supplemental essays on my Harry Potter obsession, how clumsy I am, and how my dream is to be a Saturday Night Live cast member. I had fun with my essays, really. My optional essay was about how swimming served as a metaphor for my life and the way I lived.
• Teacher Recommendation: Two good letters, one from my Spanish Language teacher, and one from one of my English teachers
• Counselor Rec: Good
• Additional Rec: One letter of recommendation from another of my English teacher, who is a Bucknell alum (grad school)
• Interview: My counselor came to my school in October to speak about Bucknell, and I had a brief 10-minute interview; she told me at the end of it that I “certainly appear to be the ideal Bucknell student,” whatever that means.</p>
<p>Other
• Ethnicity: White
• Gender: M
• Major: Elementary Education
• Income Bracket: Upper-Middle Class
• Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Honestly, not really anything, aside from the aforementioned alumni rec. Maybe because I’m a male going for education?</p>
<p>Reflection
• Strengths: Humanities, extra-curriculars, community involvement, interest displayed, essays
• Weaknesses: GPA, standardized test, lack of/low class rank, relatively low course load, math/sciences
• Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: In all honesty? I have no damn idea. See general comments.
• Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: Arcadia, Drexel, UPitt, Texas Christian, Suffolk, West Chester, Temple; Rejected: Northeastern</p>
<p>General Comments: I think my acceptance is a good example of how much goes into selecting who gets accepted and who doesn’t. As I’ve mentioned before, my grades are nowhere near what Bucknell wants, nor have they ever been; my highest GPA in my high school career was a 3.94, and that was with three AP bumps. My Math SAT1 didn’t even break 600. I believe I got in through a combination of strong essays, my community involvement, my recommendations, and the strong interest I showed. I kept in regular contact with my counselor throughout the year, letting her know how things have been going with school and any updates to my application.</p>
<p>Bucknell is my dream school, and I worked my ass off for months on my application. My grades, which I thought would prevent me from getting in, ultimately ended up not factoring into the decision too much. I see some of you are National Merit Scholars, have near-perfect SATs, are class presidents and are captains on three sports. Why did they accept me, and not the rest of you far more qualified applicants?</p>
<p>I don’t have a damn clue. I’m so sorry :(</p>
