I’m a high school junior who has always wanted to go to a liberal arts college and recently found out about Amherst. It sounds like a unique and interesting place. What types of things does Amherst look for in its students, and what would I need to do next year (sr. year) in order to potentially get into the school. Is it tough to get in there?

I’m not quite there yet (so looking forward to next year), but it would help your chances at all schools if you took some leadership roles in the extracurriculars you are currently in. Obviously you shouldn’t be joining just for the sake of apps; you should be confident that you can positively contribute to the organization. Beyond that, look into the keys to writing good essays and figure out what application materials you’ll need. It’s much easier to get a head start in the summer.

I’m not studying in the US, so the school structure and leadership positions are much different. 2 ECs is the norm in my school and having 3 or more needs approval.
