I noticed that there hasn't really been much activity on this page in comparison to years past, so I wanted to start a conversation here! I'm in Graham-Lees and I'm from Alexandria, Virginia and I cannot WAIT to start at W&L in the fall. I've already got most of what I need for my dorm, but I was wondering if anyone (current students or incoming freshmen) had any advice for unexpected necessities. Or if anyone has any advice that pertains to W&L life in general, that would be great too! O-week is coming up, y'all. It's time to get pumped.

Do not forget to bring a hammer, nails, and tacks.

Try to be in line to unload at 9:00 am when the O-student helpers are fresh. They will have your stuff to your room in minutes- while your parent helps, you can go thru the line to get your ID and keys.

Your family will make multiple trips to Walmart.

Do the above if possible, so parent(s) can attend the 2:00 welcome from President Ruscio in Lee Chapel. They will see other parents and we thought his message is well worth hearing. As well as his address on Parents Weekend.

Parents Weekend at W and L: the most fun time we;ve had with our student, friends and other families. The best Parents weekend we’ve heard.

Looking for some comments on the laundry service offered through a local Lexington cleaners. Has anyone used it? Is it worth the $500 bucks?

Did not hear good things about it from D’s friends who used it.

Do the math (500/ 9 months) and factor holidays, vacation weeks, etc plus the cost of dry cleaning on top of that, for once a week service. Our son learned to do his own- hang polo shirts damp from the pipes in Graham-Lees. He said doing laundry is overrated- not a big deal. Rooms are so small, you can only have so many clothes and if sending out once a week, do you want damp smelly work out clothes sitting around for a week ? Well, he did not. Let them learn to do their own- you will still pay for dry cleaning on occasion. Plus they will meet others in the laundry rooms.

My daughter is signing up for the service. I can see what you mean about the workout clothes, though…yuck! There are some drawbacks…it sounds like everything is treated the same…wash and fold. So, things that should be hung up will probably need more ironing, and delicates would probably have to be washed yourself.
