Class of 2017 Results: Celebrate, Discuss, Support Here

Celebrate, vent, discuss, support

got rejected :/

Just got in! Wooooo!

I just feel very frustrated and I need to rant right now. If you don’t feel like reading my wall of text, then skip over it. I don’t mind.

Back in December, when I was finishing up my college applications, I felt like I had a decent shot - or at least, as good a shot as anyone else. I knew that admissions would be tough but I applied to 12 schools (mostly reaches) in order to hedge my bets. I thought that even if I got into only 4 or 5, I would be very well set.

In February, I found out I was accepted early to Grinnell with a very generous merit scholarship. I was thrilled, and I felt sure that this was a sign that my application was competitive for other schools as well.

The first bit of bad news came in early March. I was waitlisted at WUSTL, but I wasn’t overly concerned - after all, so were lots of other people. But the terrible news just kept coming. At the end of it all, I’ve only been accepted to two schools, Grinnell and Northeastern (my safety).

I don’t understand what was so inherently wrong with my application. I don’t get how I could be accepted early with merit aid to one great school, but then turned away from almost everywhere else. I’m really, really confused and more than a little demoralized, too. I’ve been wanting to go to a school of Ivy caliber since middle school, and now I just feel empty.

I wasn’t very upset with the first waitlist. I was still feeling OK after the first denial. And the second. And the third. But after getting four rejections today, I’m crying for the first time in this entire process. I’ve worked so hard throughout high school, and have been so unbelievably stressed for the past several months. And all for nothing.

I think I’m going to go and take a nap or something.

Congratulations if you were accepted; truly, I wish you the best. You deserve it more than I do.

Reflection

Strengths: GPA, big awards, SAT IIs, ECs, essays?
Weaknesses: SAT I, essays?
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Tough competition.

Note to future applicants: It’s tough. There’s a ridiculous amount of applicants and very few spots. You REALLY need to have good essays to stand out. Work on them like no other - you won’t regret it.

Will probably stay on wait list. To accepted - please don’t take your spots. Think about us poor waitlisted students. Hahha, jk. Congrats!.
