<p>Now that RD decisions are starting to come out, I figure that this is a good time to start this. How did everyone do? Stats?</p>
<p>Has Wesleyan started sending acceptance letters? Based on last year, I was speculating that notification would be available online this coming Friday, March 22, but they haven’t even posted the release date on the site yet. Does not bode well for my son, I guess… :-(</p>

<p>ALSO - in my letter it says, and i quote:</p>
<p>“you are among the first group of students to be notified of your regular decision because we feel that you have so much to add and contribute to the Wesleyan community: we want you to begin now to plan to be at wes next fall!”</p>
<p>so, it’s just the first batch i think?

Essays: I think my common app essay was absolutely terrible. Some people have liked it, but I think it was kind of pointless and whiny and I don’t like it at all in retrospect.
Teacher Recommendation: one was probably good and one for sure was very strong
Counselor Rec: not too shabby, we have a nice relationship
Additional Rec: n/a
Interview: n/a

Applied for Financial Aid?: yes
Intended Major: film studies, (also listed interest in poli sci and Env sci)
State (if domestic applicant): TX
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: public, with an arts magnet program
Ethnicity: Hispanic, Mexican
Gender: F

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM
Reflection
Strengths: extra curriculars, GPA, sat IIs?, URM
Weaknesses: sat score, essay
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I guess URM status helped me, but hopefully it wasn’t all about that and being versatile and having multiple passions in different fields (but I could be wrong)
General Comments:
I’m extremely excited! I was getting nervous after looking at applicants who were wait listed from last years results thread. It was such a pleasant surprise and kind of picked up my spirits after being wait listed and UChicago. I can’t wait for WesFest! I received my early write to Williams not too long ago and I was worried it was only because I went to the Windows on Williams program in the fall, so this acceptance really felt like a vindication.</p>
<p>Decision: Accepted</p>
<p>Objective:
-SAT I (breakdown): 720 CR, 780 M, 710 W (2210)
-SAT II: Jap 800, Physics 740, world history 690
-Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.7
-Senior Year Course Load: Elective Chinese, English, elective maths, civics, geography, history, fine arts among others. I’m not allowed to take science.
-Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Choir comp (3rd), city choir comp (1st), school speech contest (4, 3, 3 I think?), school writing contest (1, 2, 2), represented school in city writing comp, national spelling bee (2nd), city speech contest (4th)</p>
<p>Subjective:
-Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Choir (10 yrs), theatre (stage manager, actor, music director), library science club (art director). I also put songwriting here, but it’s not an organized ec or anything.
-Volunteer/Community service: Peer support for people with mental illness.
-Summer Activities: Some random theatre workshops, plus the usual volunteering.
-Essays: One of them was a bit risky, because I mentioned my own history of depression. But I made sure it wasn’t a sob story–it was just used to highlight the significant experience. I also managed to sneak in a few mentions of community service. Also wrote about choir.
-Teacher Recommendation: I thought they were very generous, plus they mentioned some statistics to show that the school is extremely competitive which I think may have helped me out, since I’ve gotten several Cs in maths (oops).
-Counselor Rec: As above.
-Interview: I thought I screwed up because it was quite awkward!</p>
<p>Other:
-Country (if international applicant): Somewhere in Asia, but I’m a us citizen.
-School Type: public. My class has almost 1100 students.
-Ethnicity: Asian
-Gender: female
-Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): first generation</p>
<p>Reflection
-Strengths: essays, reccommendations.
Weaknesses: my school grades are horrible. My GPA doesn’t look THAT horrendous thanks to arts classes.
-Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think I did a fairly decent job of making sure everything was connected? My essays, extracurriculars, interview…I tried to make sure that I presented the core aspects of my character consistently, instead of giving them some random statistics and facts scattered all over the place. I also sent in a list of roles I’ve played.
-Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Brandeis (accepted)</p>
<p>Decision: Accepted</p>
<p>Objective:[ul]

[<em>] Strengths: Leadership, nice essays imo
[</em>] Weaknesses: Probably test scores and academics, no major awards, no varsity athletics
[<em>] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Honestly didn’t think I’d make it; don’t have a stellar application and I asked for quite a lot of FA which I thought would hurt given how they are now need-sensitive (I think?)
[</em>] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted at Macalester College with $15k merit aid; Waitlisted at WUSTL; Rejected from Stanford REA and Swarthmore EDII
[/ul]General Comments: Extremely elated when I saw the package, really didn’t expect to get in and especially not as an ‘early’ admit! There was also a handwritten note on the admission letter: Come to Wes! - which I thought was very nice :)</p>

Teacher Recommendation: AP Physics B teacher: Was quite mediocre, but complimented my strengths well AP Psychology Teacher: Terrific! The best recommendation she has ever written
Counselor Rec: AWESOME, she loved me and highlighted the qualities/circumstances my teacher’s couldn’t!

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yep
Intended Major: Biology
State (if domestic applicant): GA
Country (if international applicant): US
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Korean and proud (Though it hurts in the admissions game)
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: Very Low
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First Generation, “URM”
Reflection
Strengths: Leadership, Essays, Recommendations
Weaknesses: Probably test scores and academics, no major awards.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: The fact that I broke out of the quiet, studious Asian male stereotype and having great recommenders comment on that. Also, all my scores were in the right range and I showed them what I had to offer.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted at UGA (Honors Program auto-admit)
General Comments: SO HAPPY! This was my first RD letter that came in and it was an acceptance! I was glad there was also a handwritten note on the admission letter: Come to Wes! - and “Yes!” which made me smile I’m 100% sure it is handwritten and I am wondering if everyone else received those two comments as a P.S. In general, don’t stress and let your true character come alive in your application. Also, make good connections with your teachers (future recommenders) and your counselor. They add a new side to the application that is just as important as yours. Good luck, you can do it!</p>

Summer Activities: Internships/Jobs
Essays: I thought it was pretty good though it was random. Took a risk and wrote about Polaroids, relating it to my life, etc.
Teacher Recommendation: Read them and they were good, but not the best.
Counselor Rec: Read it and it was incredibly generic. Basically rewrote my resume in a letter format. Although my recs did emphasize me being able to do excellent in school despite having a part time job.
Additional Rec: N/A

<p>Reflection</p>
<pre><code>Strengths: My main essay maybe? It probably stood out because it was unique I think
Weaknesses: Test scores, my common app full of typos
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I think maybe they read both my QB app and CommonApp so they were able to see the significance of my achievements in context with my struggles? ahah I don’t know
</code></pre>
<p>General Comments:
I’m still in shock that I was part of the first 300 to be admitted, I’ve always thought my test scores and living in Nevada (worst education) would hurt me! I am so happy and thankful for this though, especially because they gave me very generous financial aid :)</p>
