Job/Work Experience: Tutoring
Volunteer/Community service: Ambassador Program, and I help coach the middle school math/science team in general math & calculator
Summer Activities: Duke TIP 2009,2010,2011, and 2012
Essays: Common App essay- I wrote about Hareton of Wuthering Heights and how he was so easily torn down/built up by the way Cathy acted toward him. Made it about being nice to people without judgment. Supplement essay- I wrote about how my experiences as an atheist in a predominantly religious area has provided me the opportunity to be the person that changes their mental prototype of atheists as a whole, and how that also made me a less judgmental and biased person and how it’s made me the type of person that can really mediate between 2 people.
Teacher Recommendation: I’m sure they were great. My Calculus teacher
Counselor Rec: Didn’t read it, but she knows me well, knows how much I wanted Rice, and knows I’m a competent student.
Additional Rec: Brought in one from my Physics teacher when I went down for my interview
Interview: On campus, went really well. The guy told me in the middle of the interview that it was going well. I also met the Cross country/track coach and talked to him about walking on, etc. I did the NCAA eligibility center registration, so he was probably contacted during the app process about his opinion of me.

Etc.

Applied for Financial Aid?: No
Intended Major: Civil Engineering
State: TX
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: High
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): N/A

Reflection:

Strengths: Teacher recs, transcript grades, course load, and probably the involvement I had with Rice throughout the process (tour, interview, coach, Explore Rice, local info session)
Weaknesses: Ehhh SAT, I guess. I know that’s not a defining factor though. I was a little worried about the controversial subject of religion in my essay, but it really wasn’t so much about religion as it was what I’ve gained from it, so that probably helped.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I want to go there, and it was very clear on my application. I do have strong grades and as a whole, my application can be perceived very positively.
The unique thing in your application: The thing I put for the Rice box was just something I made in paint. I wrote “As a grapheme color syesthete, I see the world a little bit differently” in the corresponding colors in which they appear in my head

Highest SAT score here by far … best SAT II Subject tests scores here by far … GPA/rank well above-average for admits … I must have either really screwed up on the essays (unlikely, given that my GC said my common app one was “perfect” and that I had several people look over the main supplemental essay) … or Rice just doesn’t like me.

Common App short - about one of my hobbies, bicycling, and how riding in the MS150 helped me grow in multiple ways. Rice Perspective essay - about growing up without religion and how I chose my own, also delved into my father’s culture and how it has affected my growing up (he is an immigrant).

Reflection
-Strengths: Common App essay, National Merit, teacher rec, community service, ACT score.
-Weaknesses: No work experience, wish I had more on my resume and that my grades had been better (definitely on the upward curve throughout high school, so freshman year pulled me down some)
-Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Essays, previous contact with Rice through National Merit.
-The most unique thing in your application: Essays, I talked a lot about religion which is somewhat taboo in the world of academia but it worked out. Box picture - my one true love, Starbucks Iced Coffee.

@tracked don’t apologize to that guy. He’s an overtly cocky d-bag who only cares about putting others down and exerting dominance. He’s funny though. :p

he had the highest scores BY FAR like a 2400 and 36 and 800s

And so? Who cares? He doesn’t need to rub it into everyone’s faces.
