I just dont understand how Rice could pass up on this kid.

highest test scores by far

^ IF the poster is telling the truth

well all it does is indicate that extracurriculars, awards, gpa matter quite a bit in addition to test scores…which we all knew.

-Volunteer/Community service: Community service at my church all four years of high school that gave me about 4238785743243543091 hours.
-Essays: Common App main - about my dad’s Major Depression Disorder and it’s impact on our family, economically, mentally, emotionally, and physically, in a family with an income of about 30k. Common App short - about my electronics club and how i prepare students to become certified technicians. Rice Perspective essay - about my experience at Rice’s SOAR program (invitation only-probably increased my chances at acceptance) and how I believe Rice is for me. -Teacher Recommendation: Only submitted one, probably one of the stronger parts of my application. My Electronics teacher wrote about how I was the best student he’s had in 15 years of teaching. I did really well in his class and he loved my writing and knew my work ethic. He also knew me personally.
-Counselor Rec: Solid
-Additional Rec: None
-Interview: On campus; went better than expected. Had so many things to say, so little time. I got pretty excited once the interview started and couldn’t stop explaining what I loved to do.

-Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Possibly my recs, my essay about my dad, SOAR program, passionate character, electronics club?
Reflection
-Strengths: Common App essay, National Hispanic Scholar, teacher rec, community service.
-Weaknesses: Work load, not enough ECs?, Test scores are in the lower areas.
-Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My essays really painted a full picture of my life at school, life at home, and how I’ve suffered and became stronger because of my dad’s illness.
-The most unique thing in your application: Probably that I started an electronics club to certify students. Usually it takes 2 years of college work to be apt enough, but I found a way to do it in high school. Box picture - A picture of an electronic chip.

I think Rice really doesnt give too much priority to scores! Rather it looks greatly at the student’s personality… I hope i get in RD
