Can anyone shed light onto why I wasn’t admitted into the honors program?

Thx appletree5656 got back on recently. Congrats texasteen. I am still anxiously waiting for a response. And also did you gibson say this message: Your application is complete and is awaiting review, prior to it changing to your acceptance

texasteen - Congrats on acceptance and scholarship. It does seem possible that your GPA was the factor, since a 95 W with as many AP (and probably honors) courses as you have taken means your UW GPA might be around 90? Something like that.

But don’t be discouraged, for two reasons. 1) If you have a really good first semester this year in high school, you can make sure Tulane sees that. Then, with a note to your admissions counselor, you can ask to be reconsidered for a Distinguished Scholars Award and to be in the Honors Program. 2) You can earn your way into the Honors Program anyway once you get to Tulane. There were some changes to the program that start this fall, but as of now at least it looks like getting a 3.6 GPA your freshman year can gain you admission into the program.

But frankly, now that they have basically made the decision that Tulane’s standards are such that the entire class is at a very high level, the impact of being in the program starting right from freshman year is less, I think. It used to be that in order to graduate with highest Latin honors (summa cum laude and magna cum laude), you had to take a certain number of honors designated courses and write a senior thesis/special project, besides having a certain GPA. They have dropped the requirements for the thesis and the honors section courses, and instead raised the GPA levels for obtaining those Latin honors. This is consistent with many top level schools such as Duke, U Chicago, etc. That doesn’t mean the Honors Program isn’t worth being in at all; it does have certain perks that can be useful, depending on your academic and career goals. But a lot of those kick in more towards junior year anyway.

So no worries, just have a great semester now and see what happens. Even if it doesn’t work out immediately, it is a very small bump in the road, one that you will completely forget about if you do well once you are at Tulane.

Just an update… I had posted about my acceptance last week and I received my official admission letter 4 days later on Friday. I got the Founder’s Scholar award for $22k a year and no honors program admittance. Slightly disappointed about that but I am still thrilled with the $22k a year scholarship! I have heard that you can still apply to be in the honors program your Sophomore, Junior, and Senior years. I am very anxious for the rest of the information with how to enroll, housing, etc. I wish they had sent it all at once but I know I am just WAY too excited for my own good!

Daughter just received her letter today. She received the Distinguished Scholars ($25K) and an invitation to the Honors program. Very excited! Her stats are 33 ACT, 3.85/3.98 GPA, SAT II (Literature 770, US History 720). 3 AP’s taken so far, 5 more this year. Best of luck to all!

That’s great, tarheel. I am sure she feels great, having this offer so early in the process. Has she had a chance to visit campus yet?

Absolutely. Just focus and do well your freshman year and you will have the solid foundation for graduating with honors.

Just received my official letter of acceptance! Got the Academic Achievement Award for $20,000 a year

Cool. So it looks like this year:

Academic Achievement Award = $20,000
Founders Award = $22,000
Distinguished Scholar Award = $25,000
Presidential Award = $30,000

No one has reported getting the Leadership Award yet, but it looks like that will be $10,000 since $10-30K is the range specified on the Admissions website.

fallenchemist - we plan to visit in the early Spring. We are going to a local Tulane event in the DC area later this week. Very familiar with the beautiful Tulane campus as we went through this process with our son four years ago.

That’s great tarheel. Just be aware that Mardi Gras is March 4, and Tulane is off all that week. So any time after March 10 is probably best. Or she could go to Honors Weekend, parents often tag along. I don’t know if they have set the dates yet, but they are usually the 3rd or 4th weekend in March and then a couple of weekends later in April for the 2nd session. Just FYI so you can take into account various factors.

From the letter that she received, looks like the Honors program weekends are either March 16/17 or April 6/7.

Has anyone heard yet from Georgia or Alabama?

Tarheel - They actually already have the dates set, that’s great. I don’t recall that happening before. Anyway, most have found that to be a good time for the kids, and it has the added benefit that it provides an opportunity to meet a potential roommate, should they choose Tulane.

Sending in my application tonight! I hope that I can join you all in celebrating soon.

i applied EA october 11th with it officially being in around oct. 15th, 16th. when would you say i should be hearing back from them?

Can’t say. It depends on many factors, such as your admissions counselor’s schedule, your particular record and whether Tulane considers you an “easy” admit decision or more borderline, etc. Hopefully it goes well for you and you hear back soon.
