Decision: Accepted!
Major: Undeclared (considering Biology)
GPA: 89/92 (100 point scale)
SAT: 1580/1630
TU is my #1 school however due to no
scholarships/or admittance to the honors college I may not be able to attend.

do u have option to retake tests or is GPA too low for schollies too? Could u live at home and go? itâs preferable not to commute but is that an option?

@ctl987 I donât think the GPA is the problem. I have just taken the ACT and am waiting to hear back, as for the SAT I took it 3 times with prep courses, books, classes in school and I actually received the same score all three times. I live only about 10 miles or so away from main campus, so commuting would not be that bad if I needed too. I really needed those scholarships/honors program.

Tstuart, well hopefully the ACT score will be what you need. could u qualify for need based aid? sorry on SAT, how frustrating. We can keep talking on here or pm me if you want. iâm not an expert but have gone through admissions and grad school admissions for me and now undergrad for my kid so i may be able to give u some ideas. i guess i was thinking commuting would cut costs if you donât get scholly. and if you qualify for need based aid, you may get some help that way too. Since Templeâs tuition is âfairlyâ low even without scholarship, you may still may be able to pull it off if you commute. what is your intended major? wish u the best!

Hey thanks for the reply! yeah any help at all would be greatly appreciated. I should be able to qualify for need based aid. (divorced parents, dad makes nothing & step mom does not work at all). As for major I am undecided but leaning towards Bio or psych and might pick up history and double.

Tstuart, some initial comments. Do u know what the deadline is to appeal for a scholarship is? i am thinking January 15th? Second, i ran some pretend figures through the net price calculator. that shows if i remember room and board of around $2500 if you live at home and i think personal expenses of around $4000. if your parents are willing to let you stay at their home and eat for free, that will drop the $2500 figure down. Same goes for personal expenses. they are estimated and if you live super frugally, you can likely lower them, Wonât be easy to do in philly but give it a shot. so as best as I can tell your set expenses at Temple will be tuition, fees, books and other school related expenses, commuting costs, and any food you buy on campus. With tuition around 13,500, weâll say tuition and fees are around $14000, and books are another $1000. Looks like you could qualify for a pell grant and a state(maybe through PHEAA) grant. plus pretty sure u can get a student loan of $5500. you can run your family income through Templeâs net price calculator to get estimate*** to get idea how much grants might be. As you may know, grants donât have to be paid back. Anyway, i am thinking your costs will be around 15000 to 17000 a year. Eeek but the student loan drops your out of pocket costs to $9500 to $11500. I am going to assume you can get a work study job on campus and make around $1000, hopefully more. I canât remember how much the grants might be for but i want to say at least $5000 with the pretend numbers i ran. Again, those are estimates. You will want to file a FAFSA as soon as possible to get actual rather than estimated figures. So i am thinking your actual out of pocket costs could be in area of $3500 to $5000 a year(15000-5500(student loan)-$1000(work study)-$5000 (need based grant money)). That is still a lot but more reachable than the $15000 you started with. wish u the best. i will look at scholarships later and see how close u are. what are your tests breakdown? eg. math, CR, etc? and do you know if Temple âsuperscoresâ or not. that means they take your best CR score, math score, etc, even if they are from different testing dates. Take care. Keep us posted. since Temple is your first choice, I hope u can make the numbers work as it would be hard to get in and then not afford it :(

since my thread go locked⊠ask me questions here. i am a current freshmon and whatnot >>>>>

scholarships and aid: you should get a letter in the mail sometime this month OR***** it is available on portal

soniccare, please see a recent post about a kid being concerned about affording Temple. no merit aid at this point. Any practical tips you can offer them? Thanks

Hello - my daughter was accepted on Oct. 25, after her tour.
Major: Nursing
GPA: UW 3.7, W 4.37
SAT: 1450/2250
ACT: 32

She got the Presidential scholarship and she is really interested in Temple!

the pres scholly was a big selling point for my kid too. he liked the campus too and Temple and Philly have a lot to offer in his fields of interest

Windowmomto2- did the scholarship offer come with the packet in a mail? My son received an email about acceptance but nothing in the mail yet

Hello, Midwestma - Her acceptance packet included the scholarship information. She had already received the acceptance and scholarship information verbally. After our October tour, she met with the nursing admissions counselor. He called her right after we left the admissions area, to tell her sheâd been accepted to the school of nursing and had gotten the scholarship. I think the packet came a week later.

Has he logged into his student account? I wonder if scholarship information is available there (UDel has their scholarship info right on their student account). I will try to check my daughterâs account, to see if I can help to answer that question.

hi, it shows up with the acceptance letter, which came about a week after the online status changed to accepted. we could not tell online whether he had a scholarship or not. I believe the scholarhships are automatic so your kidâs test scores will tell u which range they are in. you can probably guesstimate their GPA while u wait if you want to. Temple only counts core classes(eg math, science, English) towards the GPA for scholarship qualification.

Hello - my daughterâs page does not show the scholarship information. I called Nikki Buchanan in Admissions. She said that once a student pays their enrollment deposit, then their student account will provide the scholarship info, as well as a lot of other info. Maybe a quick call to Admissions would provide an answer to the scholarship question. I think the merit scholarships are handled through Admissions. Nikki (215) 204-3548 and Alex Rachubinski, (215) 204-5695 have been very helpful.

We checked tuportal but it doesnât have any info about the scholarship. Its been a week since he got an email and when I called admissions I was told that scholarship info comes with the packet. We are really hoping for a presidential scholarship but not sure it will happen. His U GPA is 3.7, W 4.3 and ACT 32, technically he meets the requirements.I wonder how many of those Temple gives out,I guess weâll just wait and see

Hey @TStuart95,
Not everyone at Temple has the best financial situation. Yes, there are kids that come from wealthy backgrounds that their parents even donate to school, but a large number of the intellectually talented students came to Temple due to financial reasons. I actually came to Temple due to financial reasons as well. Besides being offered a great Merit scholarship, I personally was offered a decent financial aid package. One of my good friends this year, his family has an EFC of 0. He received not only a pell grant, but Pennsylvania state aid. These two forms of aid provided him with approximately $9700. I know this might sound weird, but try picking up a summer job and you could potentially make $1000-3000 over the summer which would put you around 10.7-12.7k. That could leave you with work study or a part time job over the school year to cover the rest of tuition. One key thing to understand is that your tuition is dependent on the college you are enrolled in. The liberal arts college has the lowest tuition while Fox school of Business has the highest tuition. If you are in the liberal arts college, your total tuition +books+ transportation will come out to around 15.5k(estimation). I know it seems unreasonable, but it is a thing most college students struggle with. It is the reason why college students are known for saving âevery pennyâ possible. You are in a real tight financial situation, so I canât truly recommend what you should do. However, I think its possible for at least your first year.

I got the acceptance letter yesterday and received the Presidential Scholarship. Admittedly, I was pretty excited until I realized that the scholarship only covers tuition which isnât a bad thing. But being out-of-state, I know Iâm gonna have to stay on-campus at least for the first year and I didnât realize how expensive it would be.

Could anyone give me an estimate of how much the cost of living would be for one year with the Presidential scholarship?

Here are housing and dining options and costs: [Housing and Dining Costs | University Housing | Temple University](http://www.temple.edu/studentaffairs/housing/housing-and-dining-costs/)

Youâd also consider other costs beyond tuition like maybe fees, books, health insurance.

Will you be eligible for a Pell grant? Temple will stack it on top of your pres scholarship, I read.

Iâm estmating around 20000 a yea r with that scholarship

hey neonbeads, reread ur question. Cost of living will likely range from 11k to 15K a year for room and board. as ohhom, pointed out, there are other expenses you will incur too. on its net price calculator, Temple estimates all non tuition costs at about 17k a year i think for this calendar year. I suspect that is too low and am assuming it will be closer to 20K a year to start. It is still a great deal though esp when u add in the 3 stipends. Yes, room and board is pricey cause itâs Philly, a city with high living expenses My kid will likely stay at 1300 in the honors section even though that will put his housing expenses up a little. It seems like that is still a great option for the honors kids based on other posts iâve seen but there are other dorm rooms that I think were about 2K a year less. maybe the cost was closer between the dorms. the chart from ohmom can help u with those issues better than my best guess.
