[ /list][ b]General Comments:**: Can’t wait for next fall!

nate, I have a few questions. How competitive is your high school? (i.e. is it easy to attain A’s?) Also, do you know of other people who were accepted ED who didn’t attend the summer experience at Davidson? I’m really interested in Davidson but don’t think I will have time to attend the summer program-- but I want to show them as much as possible how interested I am in the school. Any comments/suggestions are greatly appreciated!

My high school is moderately competitive. Definite work and effort is needed to pull A’s but it’s not difficult by any means. If I had to rate my school (1 being a joke and 10 being insanely cutthroat) I would give it a 5. I do, I know many actually and I know people who attended the summer program that were rejected as well (4 actually).

Davidson doesn’t openly say this but contact really matters. They want to know you aren’t someone applying to Davidson as a safety for their list of Ivies. Do you mind me asking what year you are and what state you reside in? I think I could be of further assistance and give you tips on how I initially contacted my counselor.

I am a junior from Connecticut. Do you know people who were accepted ED who didn’t have “perfect” UW Gpas? that is my biggest concern, as my school is very competitive and it is hard to achieve a perfect GPA (not many people get A’s, especially in honors and AP classes)

Also, do you have any idea why those 4 people who attended the program were rejected ED? I’m wondering if there’s some “key” to getting accepted…

I do know a few. However, they still maintained high standings in their class.

In my opinion these people were deferred and rejected ED because of their class rank, SAT scores, lack of involvement and lack of contact with their admission counselors. If there’s a secret to getting in its definitely taking most of the AP’s offered at your school, a high class rank (must be in top 10%), and contact with your admission counselor. The sooner you contact Ms. Mcllory the better (but wait until RD is complete, the admissions staff is swamped with those applications). Also, if you can try and make a few trips down to the college and make sure you take official tours where they have your name and info (they keep track of the number of times you visit and make contact).

My school is very competitive and has less than 600 kids, so we don’t rank due to the large group of people that take all AP classes (therefore it is hard to determine rank) as so many people have similar stats and take hard classes (as I do).

If I am in roughly the top 20% at the #1 public school in my state and have a high SAT (above 2100) with over 200 community service hours and a lot of leadership and if I visit at least twice and apply ED do you think I serve a good shot? You say “must be in the top 10%” but 99% of the graduates of my school are college-bound and we have been ranked #1 in the state for the past few years-- so does that give some leniency to the top 10% policy?sorry if I come across as bragging but I just want to give some outside info… my school is very competitive and we don’t rank people because of this.

Do you recommend doing an alumni interview? (Have you heard of those helping people who are passionate about the school and have a good discussion with alumni?)

Thanks again for your input, I really appreciate it!

Sorry, I have one other question! What do you mean by keep in contact with your admission counselor? Are you talking about a Davidson admissions counselor or one at my highschool? (we only have “guidance” counselors so I’m not sure if that is the same thing)

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:I withdrew my other applications once accepted

Popgal: Congrats on getting accepted! If you don’t mind, I have a few questions.

 1. did you write your essays about your service opportunities? If not, where did you express your involvement in them?
 2. Did you drop a language senior year? I’m debating doing that but I’ve heard that Davidson prefers students to take all four years of the “core” classes
 3. I notice that you said your W Gpa is a 4.2… did you take all APs and Honors classes? Also, what was your lowest final “grade” in any of your classes (i.e. B-, B, A-, etc) and did you almost get all “A’s”?
 4. how much involvement with Davidson did you have prior to and during your application process? (how many times did you visit and contact them, etc.)

Any comments are appreciated; thanks!

[ b]Objective:**
[ *] SAT I (breakdown): 590CR, 800M, 660W (2050)
[ *] ACT: 26 (didn’t submit)
[ *] SAT II: 710Biology E, 730 Math II
[ *] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[ *] Weighted GPA 4.6
[ *] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable):2/97 (top 5%)
[ *] AP (place score in parenthesis): English 3 (3), US History (4), Biology (4), Cal AB (5)
[ *] IB (place score in parenthesis):
[ *] Senior Year Course Load: well 7 APs b/c I want to be Valedictorian; I’m taking 3 online and they suck. So don’t do that.
[ *] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): I don’t know if anyone know about it, but my team was National runner up in PwC High School Business Challenge… and that’s about it.

[ /list][ b]Subjective:**
[ *] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Science Olympiad (president- never won anything), Key Club (yet I didn’t put it on the app.)
[ *] Job/Work Experience:
[ *] Volunteer/Community service: I volunteer to teach Vietnamese at my local church. That’s about it.
[ *] Summer Activities: SVSM (2013). School Biotech program (2012)
[ *] Essays: I applied through QuestBridge so I put a lot of effort into my biographical essay. Beside that I don’t think my book list sounds really smart compared to what I read on CC. “Why Davidson” is solid yet not very particular because I had not visted the school as I wrote the essay.
[ *] Teacher Recommendation: pretty generic I guess.
[ *] Counselor Rec: pretty generic too.
[ *] Additional Rec: I saw what my friend wrote. It showed my academic strength in class. Think it was personal and good.

[ /list][ b]Other**
[ *] State (if domestic applicant): NC
[ *] Country (if international applicant):
[ *] School Type: Public, a big school with 2000 yet divided up into 5 small schools.
[ *] Ethnicity: Vietnamese
[ *] Gender: F
[ *] Income Bracket: I applied for QuestBridge so <30000
[ *] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I am Asian so yeah definitely Davidson would favor me. I’m also an immigrant who moved here in ninth grade.

[ /list][ b]Reflection**
[ *] Strengths: pretty much none except for perfect GPA
[ *] Weaknesses: test score, awards, E/C. everything else
[ *] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think me being an immigrant impressed them because I tried really hard and wrote about my passion wanting to be a doctor over and over again in my whole app. I also explained to them through QuestBridge app about my situation and why I don’t join much E/C.
[ *] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: UVa, Chapel Hill, and UNCC. But yeahhh Davidson will be my home now

[ /list][ b]General Comments:** Go Wildcats haha! Not a sporty person, so really nervous but I want to challenge myself anyway.
