Class of 2018 - GPA Less Than 3.0 but Still Will Go To College Thread

We’re on Long Island. She doesn’t want to be quite that far away-- we’re thinking 4-5 hours. So roughly between Boston and Baltimore, and a bit further west than Scranton.

Just dropping in with an update. DS now has 4 acceptances. Temple University! Accepted to Environmental Engineering program. It was quite a surprise that he got into his requested major.

We are anxiously awaiting 4 more schools and Army ROTC scholarship. I expect 2 of the 4 will be acceptances to the U overall, but not certain of getting into the Engineering major.

@Longhaul Congrats on the Temple acceptance, that’s terrific, especially since he got into the engineering program he wanted. Fingers crossed for more acceptances!

@sbgal2011 , thanks!

He also learned tonight that he got into Ohio University.

I am so relieved. I know there are plenty of colleges, but I really wasn’t sure he’d be accepted into Engineering programs.

So far, with a 2.75 G.P.A, accepted into Northern Arizona University (made affordable with W.U.E.)
(Computer Science Major) and University of Iowa (College of Liberal Arts—Open Major). To be honest, I didn’t think I’d get anywhere, I’m super happy that I did.

I’ve also applied to~

  1. Washington State University
  2. University of Oregon
  3. Lots of California State Universities (I live in California)
  4. University of Arizona and Arizona State University
  5. Texas A&M University
  6. University of Minnesota (Application was free, so why not)

As I’m the first one going to college in the United States, I’ve had to navigate the college application process by myself and I’m pleased at how it turned out (so far). Plus the stigma of having relatively low grades has always bogged me down, so those two acceptances really lifted me up.

So, to the rest of you on this thread, we can do it! FIGHT ON!

OK, so yesterday she was invited to join the group chat for accepted candidates for one of her SUNY schools… she’s cautiously optimistic that her first acceptance is on its way.

We visited her top 2 SUNY schools on Friday… what a nice day we had!!!

Her #1 choice is still a clear #1. But her #2 choice is now a real option-- we met with a professor and she’s wildly enthusiastic about the program they offer.

We chose not to stay over because of the approaching snow storm, so it was a long day-- 9ish hours in the car. But we had some real mother-daughter time together, lots of laughs, and an overall great day!

I had 3.0 GPA in HS but had 99.9% SAT and played varsity sports. Got into an Ivy but not HYP with full grant. But that was a long time ago.

@bjkmom So glad you had a great day! Sounds very promising, keep us posted!

I went to a low-prestige, low-ranking CSU (Not anyone’s top choice) for two years and had a lot of amazing opportunities. lots of great people, and a true college experience.

The second your first day of classes begins, it doesn’t matter what your high school GPA was. There’s more to life than the prestige of a school.

YAY!!! First non-Community College acceptance!!! SUNY Morrisville!!!

@bjkmom Congratulations!!! So happy for you all!

@collegefreak999 You will almost certainly get into Washington State.

I hope so.

Accepted into the University of Arizona as a Pre-Computer Science Major!

Congrats!!!

Update: DS heard from LSU. They want to see his mid-term grades and requested letters of references and personal statements to augment his application. Not sure what we will do yet. We are still waiting to hear from VCU Arts but their acceptance rates are low. We shall see…

Mine is going 5,308 miles away (probably).

Congrats @collegefreak999

Just checking in to see how everyone on this thread is doing. Any updates? . Would love for people to post their options and what schools your child will ultimately attend!

We are still waiting for two admission decisions, LSU and VCU Arts. We have ruled out ECU, Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky South Alabama, Alabama, and Kent State. Still considering SCAD, Ole Miss and Southern Miss, although SCAD is extremely expensive and we aren’t sure it’s really worth it. Hoping to hear by mid-March so we can do one last college tour spree during Spring Break, and finally make a decision!
