Class of 2018 Honors College

Has anyone received notice of acceptance into the Honors College yet???

Yes. One son received his yesterday, and we expect the other to receive his soon.

No letter (admissions or HC) yet, but my son’s status page now has a new note under the “Pay My Acceptance Fee…” button that says “To join the Honors College…”. I’m (pretty) sure it wasn’t there initially…so I’m cautiously assuming that this means he will be getting an invite to the HC…?

I see that, too:

“To join the Honors College, logout of this page once you have paid your acceptance fee. Log back in using the same id and pin number and click the button, ‘Join the Honors College’.”

I applied EA and just received my acceptance letter to the honors college yesterday and scholarship letter

I applied EA and received my honors college invitation yesterday

so does everyones status page say,

“To join the Honors College, logout of this page once you have paid your acceptance fee. Log back in using the same id and pin number and click the button, ‘Join the Honors College’?”

or does it mean acceptance to the honors college?

My son’s status did say that, and today he got his invitation letter to the Honor College.

I just got a letter of acceptance to the Honors College.

does anyone not have that message on their status page?

Just got my letter of acceptance to honors college too. Maybe I’ll see you guys at UVM!

Received Merit Scholarship and Honors Acceptance today (12/24)

Hey y’all!
So I applied EA and was accepted. I also received a letter about a week after and I got a Presidential Scholarship (48k and the highest for out of state applicants) however, I haven’t heard anything about the Honors College.
Is it safe to say that I’ll most likely get in, or should I have already found out by this point?

Post stats for Honors College. I have been accepted to UVM, and have been offered $48k. I am very interested in attending, and I would certainly attend, if offered a spot in the Honors College. My stats may be a little low. 670CR, 660M, 630W (taken 1x only). 3.7 unweighted/4.1 weighted. What are the stats. of those offered places in H.C.?

Keep in mind that admissions to the Honors College is not ONLY based on stats. They are purposeful in creating diversity within the HC. Students applying to those colleges/majors with a lot of students and a lot of high achievers (think pre-med bio majors in CAS, for example) are “competing” for HC spots because they don’t want the entire HC made up of CAS students or bio majors. And I imagine they are looking for diversity in other areas (e.g. ECs) as well. I know a student who graduated 3rd in his class who was NOT offered HC last year…he’s a bio major… while other students from the same HS, ranked lower, and in some cases with lower SATs, were invited.

Congrats to all who have been invited into the Honors College! My son is a freshman there, and I’d be happy to try to answer any questions you may have.

As a little bit of background, we weren’t planning on his going to UVM even though we all absolutely loved it. Most of the schools he applied to were small liberal arts ones, and he didn’t decide on UVM until the very end. His major is undecided, but he’s leaning towards Philosophy and either Statistics or Music. He lives in the Honors College residence hall (which is beautiful!).

As his parents, we probably wouldn’t have been as excited about his attending UVM if it had not been for the Honors College program. We’re very happy with what it offers him, and so far he’s very happy with it. Last semester, his honors college seminar was his favorite class, and he’s excited about the one he’s signed up for this next semester too. The seminars are interesting, small, and conveniently located right in the residence hall.

Again, congrats and feel free to ask any questions you think I may be able to answer.

Cottage Spirit: Thanks so much for the info. My son has gotten into the honors program for next year. What part of the country are you from? We are from Texas, so DS3 is a little worried about the weather and transportation to Burlington. No one from around here even thinks to apply to UVM, but he was looking for something a little different. What other schools did your son consider? Also, how much do the honors kids integrate witht the rest of the campus? Is that ever an issue?
Thanks for any other thoughts you might have.

We are from upstate NY, so much closer to UVM than you. The weather certainly will be much different than your DS3 is used to, but both the campus and Burlington truly are beautiful places year-round. Yes, it does get cold though! Burlington has an airport that connects with NYC and DC. Not sure of what transportation might be most popular for those who fly in and out. That’s probably a good question for the Admissions office?? I believe long-distance students going to UVM can also apply to live in a dorm that stays open during the breaks to make things a little easier for them.

My son also considered Bard, Macaulay at Hunter, Hampshire, Bennington, and New College of Florida. He was also accepted at Skidmore, New Paltz, and Goucher, but they weren’t as high up on his interest list.

The honors college kids integrate with the rest of the campus A LOT. They only take one honors seminar class a semester, and the rest are the regular non-honor classes. They make a big point stressing that at UVM, it just wouldn’t work to have the honors kids too segregated, that the type of students who go to UVM don’t want to be isolated from one another. The honors college staff also host speakers and such, and those events are open to everyone, not just the students in the honors college. With that said, while my DS has friends outside of the honors college, his closest ones ARE in the honors college. It’s pretty normal, though, to at least start out spending most of your time with others who live in the same dorm. But I suppose the kids in the honors college may tend to be more like-minded as well. DS was a little worried that there would be an overload of nerds in the honors college (he’s a long-haired, bare-footed, rockin’ guitar player), but that hasn’t seemed to be a problem for him - other than the girls next door wanting his roommate and him to stop playing by midnight. : /

Cottage Spirit: Thanks so much for all the info. DS3 has also been accepted to Tulane and Fordham and he’s waiting for a few others. DS3 is just a regular well-rounded, but really smart creative kid. He goes to a private school full of intense headed-to-ivy kids and wants to break away from that mold a little. I definitely plan to bring him to visit Burlington. Any suggestions on where to stay or what to do? thanks again!

DS didn’t attend a private high school, but we’re in a high-pressure public school district full of overachievers. When it comes to academics, he is not into that type of intensity. While he happens to be very intelligent, he is also very modest, low-key, and not into competition. Being in UVM’s honor college seems so far to be an overall great fit for him.

When we’ve stayed in Burlington to visit the college, we’ve stayed at the Sheraton. It’s very convenient and I guess it’s technically on the UVM campus (though on the edge of it). A few times, we just walked back and forth between the hotel and where we needed to be on campus. For accepted students day, they also had shuttle buses running in between that hotel and the main part of the campus. The event’s check-in, breakfast, etc. were right at the Sheraton as well.

I’ve also looked into staying at the Hilton and Hotel Vermont. They’re both downtown and within walking distance to the campus, but you do have to walk up a hill to get there. There are also less expensive hotels in the area, but I’m a little spoiled in that I like to be right there. LOL We’re planning to spend a week up in Burlington this summer and we will be renting a small house in downtown. (For years, we’ve ended each summer by staying a week or two on the NY side of Lake Champlain and would sometimes take the ferry over to Burlington for the day. This will be our first time spending the whole trip on the VT side.)

Definitely spend time walking around the downtown area, especially Church Street. A good part of it only allows pedestrian traffic, which makes it more fun. Great food options, neat little shops, street entertainers. You will be amazed at all of the fabulous, funky eateries. Our favorite restaurant seems to be Farmhouse Tap and Grill. We’ve also enjoyed August First, Leunig’s Bistro, Bueno y Sano, and Skinny Pancake. LOTS of options though!! Ben & Jerry’s on Church Street is always very popular too, and if you like chocolate, check out Lake Champlain Chocolates. (Their Mexican dark hot chocolate is SO delicious!) You should also take some time to walk down by the lake. Really, it is a terrific little city. Try to park early though and not fuss too much with driving around. Walking around the city is much more enjoyable than driving around it.
