The GC at my D’s school says that students are given an excused absence for college visits and it will not affect her standing in terms of attendance. She will miss at least 7 days, 6 of the days in a row.

Cellomom51: My S auditioned last weekend at Elon. There were only 17 kids that day and they told us it was an unusually small group. Still, we were there from 8:30-4:30. S had a great day!

My D missed over 10 days and the form letter came at 7 absences…even though we previously talked about it. I called and said I am sure that you have to send these out as a formality and they assured me that it would not affect her graduation. If your kid is keeping up on their homework and their grades are not suffering they really can not do anything other than be annoying about it. I had spoke to each teacher in the beginning of the year about the situation and bot my D and I kept them in the loop and they were all great about it. It was the administration and the “rules” that gave her a hard time.

Just had the longest day ever at Elon auditions. If anyone has questions please feel free to ask. The school definitely exceeded my expectations, and it has moved to the top of my daughter’s list.

DoReMiMom - we have a 2013/2014 audition day thread, if you wouldn’t mind can you post some details there?

On our way home from BW my S’s friend still hadn’t done her songs at Elon and it was 5:40 I was surprised. We’ve been to 2 auditions so far and at both places the parents really raved about Elon.

Your S’s friend must’ve been in my D’s group at 6th. They were the last group to sing. I’ll hop over to the other thread and post a recap.

I am laughing at myself. I’ve been lurking on CC since D’s sophomore year. It’s so surreal that we are now in the thick of it and I’m no longer lurking but posting!

Kategrizz, I started lurking around the same time. I vividly remember the afternoon in the spring of my son’s junior year when I opened a website for one of the schools on his list and felt this dreadful sensation of butterflies in my stomach (i.e., adrenaline rush) and realized “holy crap, this is no longer in my imagination, this is for REAL and these dates are HIS audition dates!” This was not my first kid to go to college, by the way, but it was definitely a unique and powerful experience relative to our family’s other application journeys. It’ll seem like you’re swimming in jello a lot of the time, but in May you’ll probably look back and wonder where the time has gone. :)

I know exactly what you mean. I had the same rush! Not my first to go to college either… But my first (and only) MT. Older D applied to only one school. Applied to her athletic training program during sophomore year, and is happily studying about anatomy and joints and injuries and concussions!! She will be a senior next year.

At this time a year ago I thought my son was going to be a Jazz Studies major (drumset)!
This has been a surreal experience to say the least. We sent him to CMU pre-college to determine how he stacked up, and the feedback was incredibly positive. I still have some doubt, but he is confident but also realistic. I hope there will be a positive outcome, and as others have said, this process has brought us even closer. To me, it has been worth the $$$ and my precarious mental health status!

Here I was thinking I was the only long time lurker…Ha! I agree that it is such a surreal feeling to be the ones posting about auditions and passing along advice. I do have to say, as stressful as things have been, I wouldn’t change a thing…but you may have to ask me again in March!

The ups and downs of college auditions are good preparation for the ups and downs of production auditions once they’re in school! Just went through about 10 days of torture, with every emotion known to man being conveyed to me via text and e-mail from my usually rock-steady son…after all the work and a great call-back experience, he has a tiny role in a mainstage play at college and is ELATED. Gotta admit, it was a bit of a relief to just hear about auditions and not have to plan the trip, pack and drive the car, sit with him through the torture of waiting to audition, etc., but in a funny way I do miss those days! :)

Congratulations to your S Times3 - that is so exciting! Can you say what the show is? And I am sure the ups and downs of production auditions at college are good preparation for the ups and downs of professional auditions once they leave college - it just never ends does it?! What a profession!

Great to “hear” Times!! Congrats to him!

Now that all the apps and supplements are in and auditions scheduled, is anyone else second guessing and wondering if your child applied to enough schools?

Yes bisouu and my D applied to 18 schools. I don’t think we will ever think they’ve applied to enough. :)

I suppose there is always that thought…but even if we wanted to, scheduling is preventing us from doing more…not to mention the financial considerations. We took a great deal of time deciding on how best to balance the list and are going to have to trust in that. She already has some academic acceptances, so even if she was not accepted artistically to a BFA program, she has some BA options she would be happy with. She applied to 13 schools, 3 which are non auditioned programs. Depending on what the unified schedule looks like, she may add some walk-ins in Chicago. I am thinking this is more than enough, but who knows how she will feel after audition season is finished.

Do you happen to know which schools do walk ins? We are doing Unifieds in LA

Not really…I know there are some threads on this…maybe someone will post the links. We will be in Chicago, which may have different walk ins available than LA. We figured we would look to see what was available once we got to Chicago, and that is only if we have the time.

Zebrarunner and MTMajorCook, the show is “The Importance of Being Earnest,” and its run coincides with my spring break from school, so big hurrays all around! Funny thing is, before auditions, I told him if he was lucky enough to get cast in anything this spring, we’d get there to see him, even if he was “butler #2.” So guess what role he got in Earnest…yep, Butler #2 (Merriman)!! :D
