Throughout all of this dress discussion I have been thinking about your very talented daughter ATLAST. I’m so glad you posted. I remember her outfit at Michigan and Unifieds and loved it!
She looked so unique and adorable. My son was with her at MPulse and we weren’t surprised by her incredible success last season.
In the end, it doesn’t really matter what you wear as long as you are neat and professional.
The actors do tend to be a little more edgy than the MT’s and I think that is because the actors tend to approach the craft more dramatically at 17. The MT’s live to sing and dance.
Many of the MT’s I know are also amazing actors but their approach at age 17 is, I don’t know, more perky? (In a good way) That changes with time and study.
The bottom line is that your talent earns you a spot in these very competitive programs.
Just wear what makes you most confident and go kill it!

vynstar, I didn’t think you were grumpy at all! I think what jeffandann says is very important.

Perhaps what Brent Wagner was reacting to was distracting clothes and he gave the ‘uniform’ because people weren’t reading between the lines. Sometimes it’s easier to give a positive model - ‘this is what I’d like to see’ - rather than a general guide - ‘Don’t distract from your face.’ I know I’ve seen poor choices, particularly with girls. The worst are the girls who somehow think they can seduce the middle aged judges into accepting them and dress in very poor taste–What I’ve are very short skirts/baby-doll dresses that barely conceal their underwear, low neckline so cleavage is revealed, and very high heels. Sometimes the girls can barely walk. Avoid.

However, if nude heels and a navy dress are not ‘you’ don’t wear it. Wear something else. Whatever you wear though, make sure that a) you can move well in it, b) it doesn’t distract from your face and c) it is how you ‘are’ normally, it conveys you.

ATLAST, our D’s sound very similar. Mine wore a vintage blue and white polka dot dress with saddle shoes for her first audition this season. She will be wearing vintage for each subsequent auditions (even a print) because that is who she is. She feels confident and pretty which is all that matters.

bisouu, that outfit sounds adorable!

At md311mt, okay, maybe I gave a few too many details, if you actually remember the dress - lol! She wore the same dress to every single audition, and still loves it. We had another as a backup, but it was never needed. Anyway, I wish the best to all of the rest of you and may none of you experience any audition attire nightmares! There are so many other things to focus on that this one decision should be a relatively stress-free one!

Other than “what to wear” how is everyone?

S has 2 auditions down and a short break before Rider on 12/14. Surprisingly the wait to hear from the first 2 auditions is less stressful to me than the prescreens. Next week may be a different story though, WSU said “3 weeks”. BW said “not until mid December” so maybe I’ll start freaking out closer to the expected times LOL! I see BW has two dates completely full for auditions. Kinda bums me out Rider decisions from the Dec. audition won’t be sent until February but what’s a MT mom to do? At least the rest of my carefully crafted audition schedule fell in place!

He STILL hasn’t submitted prescreens to Ithaca and Mich, how did we go from being ahead of the game to under the gun to get them in? I think he has to write a personal statement, this is the hold up.

Still needs some LORs to get on file and Ithaca for some reason doesn’t have anything so I’ll have to have it all resent. Got his login for Otterbein’s website, I like that they personalize the page for you.

Hope everyone is hanging in there!

MTMajorCook-We are in a quiet holding pattern right now. Our only fall audition school was BW-next up is Shenandoah in January. The one thing that D is worried about more than anything is her unified schedule. When she originally requested dates from different schools, she was picking dates…time were still to be determined. That means we have several schools lined up on the same day which wouldn’t normally be a problem, except we have no specific times. We know Pace is on a Tuesday afternoon, and the Montclair is Monday am with the dance audition at noon…nothing else has been finalized yet. I am sure it will all fall in to place at some point.

We still haven’t heard back from Ithaca yet, but I know several who requested Unified slots who have not heard back either. We have had academic acceptances come in from several schools-that is always a big stress reliever!

D has turned her attention to enjoying the rest of the semester before Christmas break…I do not want her to become so wrapped up in this process that she forgets to experience her senior year (not to mention staying on track academically).

Our family is going to NYC for a few days over Christmas break and we hope to catch “Big Fish” before it closes.

Word on the street is that Ithaca is only looking at presceens for the December audition date. They won’t look at the others until January.

Have a great trip, frazzled. I would recommend that you have a back-up for a show to see. Big Fish has been such a huge flop that I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it closes even earlier than the announced early closing.

For anyone headed to NYC, I would recommend " A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder" that officially opened this week. The critics are raving about it!

I recently saw A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder and I highly recommend it.

Anyone have a good resource to help an actor learn a NY accent?

Bisouu, for who? The students are generally advised not to do accents for college auditions. Is it for someone else?

Oh sorry…My D is in a local theater production of It’s A Wonderful Life and needs to use an accent for one of the characters…

Online!

I work at a theater store that stocks accent CDs and tapes. We’re about to offer them at half price to clear them out, because everyone is getting the accent lessons online with downloads now. Among the best ones are from Gillian Lane Plescia’s offerings, or a company called “Acting with an Accent,” and another is Paul Meier Dialect Services.

You will be amazed at the range of accent instruction available.

hehe we thought we lost you for sec bisouu and you D was going to waltz in there doing her best Regis impression LOL

Big Fish is on the TKTS half-price list right now. (You can get an app that shows you what they have before you head over.) There’s a TON of interesting stuff going for half – Glass Menagerie, that Twelfth Night with Mark RYlance (or RIII depending on what day), Waiting for Godot…

We went to Big Fish in Chicago last spring and enjoyed it, mostly for Norbert Leo Butz but also the spectacle of it.

Can you tell I wish I was in NYC?

I think there is a Living Social deal for Big Fish at the moment. I am seeing it on Saturday and have heard really good things about it. However, if you haven’t seen Once yet, I highly recommend. And there are some Living Social or Groupon deals out for that now too.

The scene in Big Fish with the Witch is pretty amazing.

I think the Witch on Broadway is a recent Baldwin Wallace graduate, I think I read that somewhere.
