My D used live piano for her prescreens. She was successful on all of them for follow up auditions. Her vocal coach is her pianist so that was great. For her songs, she used a boy from HS who loves filming and used his gear and time. We paid him $25 (his price). At home, we used a Flipcam for the monologues, which worked GREAT. It is an inexpensive purchase you can find online. I did the editing with our computers which was easy once I found some online instructions. I am no tech wizard and found it all doable.

Monkey13, I’m curious which school stopped playing halfway through?

dreambelle13, it was Indiana. Which we really liked, BTW. Great program.

International student, 5’2, mix/belter. I primarily am a singer, then dancer/actress. I am auditioning at unifieds.
Hoping to secure some sort of scholarship because international fees are hefty! If anyone else has been through unifieds I would love some advice.

Jessgn and others, for info on unifieds and auditions, there are lots of threads on this. Try:

Jessgn, we should talk. I’m an international student and have been through this process once before. I also went to New York Unifieds this winter. Send me a PM if you’d like.

Well, guess I should join in.
My D is 5’6.5" Blonde and Curly - Blue Eyes and Long legs. Singer first, Actor second, Dancer third - however where there used to be a bigger gap down to the dance - she has really spent the last couple of years focusing on technique and ballet - and I would say she has closed that gap quite a bit. She has always been a strong tapper. Not a competition dancer, however. Belter/Soprano. Grades are excellent, as are test scores.

She has done community theater, high school productions, and trains at a Performing Arts Studio, as well as another Dance Studio, and takes Private Voice. She heads out in a week and a half to Tampa, FL to spend 3 weeks this summer at the Broadway Theatre Project. She is so excited!

We are also happy to be working with MTCA - primarily for monologue help and mock auditions - as we have strong local vocal coaching. She also recently had her dance consult with them, and was pleased to hear that she is on the right track there.

She’s a busy girl, and I have been appointed cheif organizer of this adventure. I will be very happy next Apri/May when this is all over, and I can enjoy the end of her Senior year with her!

Greetings All!

So excited for everyone. This is a very fun/crazy time in your lives and one that you will always remember. Auditioning for schools was definitely the most I’ve learned about myself.

For the Singer/Actor types here are some good schools.
-Webster University (Which is where I go to school. I absolutely LOVE it! A Challenging program that pushes you to the limit as a performer and human being. Feel free to message me for more info! Definitely look for Strong Actors and Singers)

-Carnegie Mellon (Actor/Singers)
-University of Michigan (great for both Singer’s and Dancer)
-CCM (Great for singer and dancers)
-Ithaca College (Singer/Actors)

-Roosevelt University (Has just started a system where you could be a Voice Emphasis or Dance Emphasis)

Boston Conservatory - Singer/Dancers
Penn State - Singer/dancers

AND SO MANY MANY MORE!

So happy to “meet” everyone! It still seems so overwhelming to me, but I’m sure we’ll figure it out.
When I hear my daughter sing her songs and do her monologues with her coaches (over Skype), it’s hard to believe that any school wouldn’t want her :). I know we all feel that way about our kids – dreading the inevitable rejections and really hoping that at least one school is looking for a small, cute and funny actor/singer!

I’m also an international student from Ireland hoping to study MT or acting in the States. 6"1, primarily actor, dancer then singer. Any other international students want to worry with me… send me a message :P

So it’s off to the races. . .

My son is 6’ 2" - hopes he doesn’t get any taller - and has been trying to develop as a triple threat (now even getting absorbed with piano for quadruple threat??). For the last 5 years he has been working really hard on his dancing, but in just the last year has come to realize how important the acting is. He and I have been to A LOT of shows in the last several years - musicals, ballets, plays, concerts - and we both have noticed that the most technically proficient performers are not worth watching, or listening to, if they don’t engage well with the other performers or the audience. Glad he’s learned this his junior year of HS.

He is currently recovering from surgical repair of a torn labrum in his shoulder, throwing a monkey wrench in his plans to prep for his upcoming audition season. The best-laid plans of mice and men. . .

He has practically grown up in CCM’s Prep Department - if you have questions about that school/location, ask away. We’ve only had limited personal experience with the faculty, but we’ve seen many shows and know the area well.

He was accepted to U. of M.'s summer program based on video we recorded at our church (NOT very formal). It worked out well, but we had a heck of a time getting it uploaded due to slow internet speed, and lack of technological skill on the part of his personal assistant/videographer/agent/marketing director (me). Glad we went through it once so we have a clue as to what we’re getting into.

Here’s to all of us over the next 9 months!

I’m so glad this thread was started! I’m a rising senior who is preparing for (and constantly stressed out over) the 2014 MT audition season. I’m 5’2", petite, brunette, with a strong legit soprano but not a very strong belt. I am definitely an actor first, then a singer, and I have intermediate training in ballet, tap, and jazz. My SAT was a 1930, but I’m planning on retaking it in October since it’s really not up to the standards of some of the more academically challenging schools. I did a lot of research into MTCA but my parents thought it was too expensive, but I am working with another coach (Holly-Anne Ruggerio). I’m going to be attending NYC Unifieds in 2014, being as I live on Long Island and a commute to the city is an hour or so train ride.

I have a long list of schools (18) that I’m looking to narrow down to about 12-13. Do you any of you know which programs place a particular emphasis on acting over the other two disciplines? I’ve heard CMU does, but that’s all, and I’m afraid of whether I’ll be academically accepted there or not.

Also, I’m having a little bit of a problem with what “type” I fit into. My personality, voice, and body type seem well-suited for the typical sweet, innocent ingenue, but I keep hearing that ingenues are tall. Will my height terribly get in the way? Should I wear character shoes/other modest heels to my audition to make up the difference? Even then I’ll still only be 5’4"…

So glad to know I’m not going through this ordeal alone :)

Daniellececelia, yes, CMU is strong on the acting - they’ve even taken away the dance portion of their MT auditions. Not sure yet about others that are strong on the acting. My S had the privilege to audition for MT colleges this spring at the SETC convention - a PHENOMENAL experience - and attended workshops given by MT faculty who had watched the auditions. More than one cautioned girls AGAINST wearing shoes that were too high., Wearing tall shoes does not make the wearer tall - it just makes her have a hard time moving. They DID say to wear character shoes, because that is what they would be expecting you to wear/dance in on stage. My S and I went to CCM’s senior showcase this spring. The girls were ALL shapes and sizes. Boys varied in height from very short to tall. Good Luck!

mom4brwayboy, You thought the SETC auditions were worthwhile? What comes of them?

Thank you so much mom4bwayboy, I’ll make sure to take all of that into account :)

daniellececelia, CMU’s academic requirements are not the same for the drama school. Obviously you need to be a decent student, but CMU isn’t judging the actors and MT applicants by the same standards as the engineers. It’s about the audition.

If they used the same academic criteria, that would be about as fair as making the engineering applicants do a couple of contrasting monologues…which would be kinda funny if you ask me.

Ithaca is also an acting-first type program. Strong academics are not necessary for CMU.

Regarding the CMU academics - wow, really? That’s a relief, I was under the impression you had to gain academic acceptance into the school before scheduling an audition and being accepted into the MT program.
And Ithaca is on my list - that’s great to know that it’s another acting-first program! Lots of thanks to both of you!

You may be thinking of UofM for the academic acceptance first

daniellececelia- Take a look at Webster University right outside of St. Louis. I know they place a huge emphasis on characterization. I’ll be auditioning there for BFA acting.

You guys might be hearing from me over on the Theatre/Drama board. I’m a straight actor, but I popped in to check on my musical theatre buddies! I’m also a rising senior currently planning on auditioning for 5 BFA acting programs. I know- only 5. How could I be so insane? Well, I love my “back up”- U of MN Twin Cities’ open enrollment BA. It’s very performance oriented and all students receive countless opportunities even in that. I figured I’d settle with 5 schools I like instead of stressing out over finding more when I’m ok with my plan B.
