Class of 2018 (yikes!) - Sharing,Venting, Etc

Lcoulter 32724; After MUCH deliberation, my D has decided to add some vocal performance schools to her list as well. Why not learn opera if you can? Gives you other options for jobs! She will be applying to Julliard, Oberlin, and CCM for vocal performance. Plus a very long list of MT programs. She will end up where she is meant to be. GOod luck to your daughter too.

@Princessjpmom and others considering VP in addition to MT: you may find this thread of interest:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/musical-theater-major/1319248-why-vocal-performance-wrong-choice-mt-career.html?highlight=vocal

There are many excellent points raised by some of our academic and professional coach contributors.

^^ In the end, it all depends on the emphasis of the program and the repertoire they will be singing as a VP major. It’s important to do your research into the program, its classes, philosophy, vocal teachers, and methodology.

Hi there! Well, I guess I’ll throw my S into the mix. He is a 6" tall, brown hair, hazel eyed charasmatic confident MT hopeful. He is a singer, actor, then dancer. Has had several years of vocal training and most recently acting/audition coaching and dance training. He does not have any MT productions outside of his school experiences (where he has been cast as lead the last two productions). His biggest accolade, besides his lead roles, would be NAfME’s All Eastern Honors Choir this past year. I fear his lack of other experience will be a deterrant for some schools unless he blows them away at the auditions. I know most parents believe their kids are “the best”…I guess I’m the opposite when reading all these posts and think, “Wow, there are soooo many kids out there applying for such a small number of spots…how will he ever get in anywhere!”. His director’s (vocal and theatre) assure me he will get in somewhere. I’ll keep praying:)

I too have been lurking on this site since the spring and can’t believe HOW MUCH I’ve learned about this process. Overwhelming is an understatement. We have a large list of schools that we are applying to and hopefully auditioning for (15). I would categorize my son’s academics as above average (not stellar), so the list may be reduced just due to academic declines.

I look forward to reading more of these posts and sharing our experiences. How do we get this thread pinned to the top of the list?

I’m pretty late in the game, but here goes :). My S is 5’10, very slight, about 125 pounds with short brown hair and hazel eyes. I’d say he’s a singer first, actor second, and by default dancer 3rd. He has taken a few years of voice lessons and has a usable 3 octave range low g to high c, whatever that all means.
He’s been acting in camps since he was 10, middle and high school productions as leads and understudy, and some local theater and has 16 points toward his equity card.
With limited dance, a few private lessons, hip hop, and broadway jazz classes we haven’t really looked at a lot of the big schools, but it seems maybe his lack of dance won’t hurt as much as I think.
Do I think he’s good, of course, he’s my kid, lol. He’s a good student, not great, 3.4 GPA, with just average test scores.
He doesn’t want to be in a city, but near one with theater opportunities and would like somewhat of a typical college experience.
He worries if he will get in anywhere as I’m sure they/we all do, but I guess that’s the nature of the beast.
I’m waiting for a call back from MTCA to hopefully get started with them although it’s a bit late.

My turn! My D is a short (5’1") AA cutie. Actress/Singer, then dancer/gymnast. Many years of community theatre and high school shows. Started working with a vocal coach and acting coach last year. Just started with a MT audition/admissions coach last week.

She does like the traditional campus experience, but fell in love with a true conservatory during her pre-college summer program, so now that’s on the list.

Has been academically accepted to two of her schools. She’s about to submit her common app, which includes about six schools. She loves the southern schools.

I’m excited!

Just posting to greet the last few additions! Many of you all mentioned an interest in the Southern schools, a school with the “typical college experience” included, or schools with lighter academic admission standards. Coastal Carolina University fits all of those categories! If you are interested in/have questions about CCU (or it’s already on your list!), feel free to send me a private message. :)

MTMommaJAA -
I’m right there with you regarding the staggering amount of talent out there and wondering where my son fits in. I was unwittingly the voice of doom for the poor kid because I kept repeating the slim odds of getting into one school or another. My son was able to point out to me that I wasn’t helping, and that he was fully aware of the challenge ahead and was ready to face it head on.

AlexaMT - your posts led me and my son to check out Coastal Carolina and he has applied and is working on his pre-screen for submission. You are the Coastal Carolina Good Will Ambassador!

entertainersmom- So glad to hear that! I would make the joke that it’s my job… but it’s not a joke- it really is my job. But still, wonderful to hear. I look forward to possibly meeting you all throughout the audition process!

Don’t know how I missed this.

My S is 5’11", dark hair, dark eyes…ended up way more handsome than I expected from the bumpy bald headed baby I started out with LOL. He’s a singer, dancer, actor. He’s been training at a performing arts school with private voice for the last 4 years. He’s at the studio more than he’s home. Performed, with leads the last 2 years, in all his high school productions. We are very proud of his Gelly Kelly nomination for Best Actor in a High School Musical last year, its an experience he won’t soon forget. He is a student director/choreographer of a group of teenagers that put on a 45 minute Broadway type show for nursing homes, hospitals and festivals in the area. They have 2 seasons, summer and holiday. Right now he’s in Cabaret at a small local theater, he is loving this experience. He wishes he would’ve done more local theater, he didn’t expect to love it so much. His role is the nazi boy that sings “Tomorrow Belongs to Me”, they lowered it for him because he’s a baritone. He’s also in all the dance numbers. S is a great tapper, I have no idea how he learned to tap so well in under 4 years. He attended CCM’s summer program and was one of 8 that made the tap number, the only boy. He also attended Point Park’s International Dance Program last summer.

He’s applied to 10 schools. 8 BFA’s, 1 BM and 1 BA. CMU, Point Park, Penn State, Rider, CCM, U of Mich, Otterbein, Ithaca, Baldwin Wallace and Wright State. I need to talk to him about a safety.

We are moving along with all the information, scheduled to tape pre screening next week with a live pianist. I am glad I read this, I won’t waste cash I don’t have hiring somebody I’ll just make sure the camera is a good quality and on a tripod.

Break a leg everyone! Looking forward to posting in the 2014 acceptance/selection thread!

S has good academics but test score so far have only been average, he’s going to try again soon. His scores are high enough for academic acceptance to U of Mich but I was wondering if there is academic money he can get with higher scores? I’m not sure how all that works yet I need to go to a financial aide seminar, late start on this for sure. He has a 3.94 GPA but only average SATS.

All this and he manages to work 1 day a week bussing tables at my friend’s restaurant.

MTMAJORCOOK, I’ve seen your posts about your son, but, wow, what a son you have! I love the group that’s assembled to entertain at the hospitals and nursing homes. Way cool!

Welcome, everybody!

GSOMTMom - Thank you, I’m very fortunate he’s a nice kid. After I typed that I thought “no wonder I never see this kid, he’s busy” lol

That group is special for sure, there are 20 of them. 12 girls 8 boys ages range from 12 to 18, once they graduate high school they can no longer participate. So this is sadly his last holiday season. Some are very serious MTers, some just love to do it. We have former kids now at CCM, PPU, Penn State and CMU. And one just started his MFA at NYU (my S’s hero). The nursing home residents love love them. Somehow I always end up near the “old lady” line and get all the questions/comments. lol I love talking to them, they really love the kids.

I also loved your post about your son. Our D has also very much enjoyed performing with some of her voice teacher’s other students for the elderly residents at some of our local senior homes, and misses doing this since she has been away from home these past few years, first for boarding school and now at college. One time while visiting a senior residence facility, we realized we were seated at a table with a male resident there who was a former mayor of our city. He grabbed my D’s hand after she sang and thanked her very profusely - was very complimentary and kind, and thoroughly enjoyed the performance. Sadly, we heard a few weeks later that he had passed away. Amazing how music can touch a heart, and those opportunities to bring joy to the elderly are so special! We’ll just have to hope your S ends up at UM so they can meet and start a similar group there - haha! D is an MT freshman there. Your son’s list of schools looks great! All the best to him - hang on and enjoy the ride! If I remember correctly, there is a minimum SAT score of 1650 required for consideration at UM for MT, but we were told the average for last year’s class was more like 2000. Don’t let the number scare you, as they DO look at more than test scores!

MTMajorCook, you said you have to talk to your son about a safety. One that doesn’t get much play here that is an “up and coming program” that is right in your backyard (and mine) is Seton Hill University. It was my S’s safety, and he has some friends there. They’ve always had a nice little program there and people have gone on to do some good stuff. Brand new beautiful performing arts center. Worth a look. Their program was built in part by the now retired Gene Saraceni who still does a lot of great local acting and often does character roles in CLO musicals. I don’t think your kid will need a safety…but as we all know, nothing is guaranteed.

To add to what you guys are saying about the arts touching the heart and soul (especially of our older folks), AMEN to that! ATLAST, no matter where your D goes from here, she is not likely to forget that day. My son had an experience sort of like that and nothing keeps you grounded and hard working like those moments. Awesome!

Thanks CollegeDad we’ll check it out. Hopefully you are correct and he won’t need a safety but who knows. He usually handle pressure well, it usually makes him better, but this is a whole new level of pressure.

The most touching shows for me are the shows for special needs kids or at Childrens Hospital. His group performed at the Pittsburgh Zoo this year for “dream night” its a night dedicated to kids with special needs and their families. I well up every time I think of that day. To watch how music moves people is amazing to me. And its true these experiences really remind them why they do and love what they do.

ATLAST - yea he’s squeeking by UM’s SAT requirement…gulp…on the 2000 I don’t know what it is about that test I don’t know if he’ll get up there. Maybe he should try the ACT.

Hi everyone  Is anyone as frustrated as me about CCM’s lack of response regarding the audition date / login issue!?!? I have spoken to 3 different people there already this morning, and no one seems to know what’s going on. I saw this “Venting” thread and had to vent.

MTMajorCook - I see you’re a fellow Pittsburgher! Which high school does your son attend? My D is a senior at Upper St. Clair, and I’m thinking she and your son may know each other since the teenage MT community is somewhat tightknit.

HannahsMom, D sent an email to admissions last week about it and they sent a response that said she should receive the CCM application in a few days. That’s not at all definitive, but at least someone responded.

Everybody, please make sure to update your CC profile page to include your location. It is often very helpful.

HOW TO DO IT: Scroll to the top. Under the banner ads you will see a pale blue menu bar that goes across the whole screen. Click on “My Control Panel.” When a new screen comes up, click on “Edit Your Details.” Update the field called “Where You Live.” (It is also helpful to update the “User Type -What Best Describes You” to indicate if you are a parent or a student.) Then SAVE CHANGES, and your location will begin to appear under your user name.

This can help everyone help one another.

Thank you GSOMTMom. I appreciate the glimpse of hope that someone has responded from CCM.

My daughter is a singer/actor/dancer - in that order. She has applied to 18 schools (includes 4 safety schools)…
CMU, NYU-Tisch, Boston Conservatory, CCM, Elon, Point Park, Penn State, Ithaca, Emerson College, Otterbein, Pace (Safety), Seton Hill University (Safety), American University, University of New Haven (Safety), Hofstra (Safety), University of Michigan. She spent the summer at the CMU Pre-College Conservatory program. CMU is her 2nd choice. First choice is CCM.

Based on how intense this is for us as parents, I can’t begin to imagine how stressed our kids are.

HannahsMom2018… Your list is fine but please note that Pace can in no way be called a safety unless your daughter is applying with a different major. Pace has become very competitive and no audition school should be considered a safety.
