Once it’s decided that someone has enough talent to be in a specific program based on one’s audition, other factors definitely go into the selection process. Certainly consideration is given to the balance between male and female. Next a range of voice parts so that the program has what it needs. But beyond that comes overall type. Looks certainly come into play. Typecasting does exist, with weight, body type, ethnicity, attractiveness, age-range all taken into account.

Sometimes lack of experience on a resume is overlooked if a program recognizes an individual’s potential and willingness to learn…

typecasting for programs definitely exists in respect to college programs. One of the parent meetings we attended while our son auditioned went into great detail about it and compared it to an orchestra or a football team. He said they don’t need multiple quarterbacks or tuba players and they seek to “have a full orchestra” in respect to their programs.
As uskookfish said once it’s decided that someone has enough talent there are other factors that go into the selection process. Certainly these can include looks, size, leading, character, best friend type are all factors that can make a final decision and sometimes a stronger performer can lose out to a lesser performer based on type. It happens.

^Completely agree with uskoolfish and zonolo–schools say it, and we’ve all seen it happen–type matters. Schools also say (and we’ve all seen) that resumes aren’t that big a deal. A quick search on this and the theater forum will make that clear. The experience reflected on your resume will matter if it builds skills and helps you show you best self at an audition!

The choice, or need, to do theatre outside of school is very individual and depends on the level of theatre done at your school as well as the level of outside theatre being done in your area.

You do not need to sing in another language to audition for Musical Theatre.

OCU, which is a BM in MT, asks for 3 songs, including, “One classical or art song in any language” which could be in another language or not. Their Music Theater and Vocal Performance combined audition does require “One classical or art song in early Italian”; but if you aren’t classically trained, which would include Italian songs and aria’s, you would not be applying to their VP program.

UCLA does not require a classical song for MT. That poster is confused and I don’t know what TFT stands for…but I’m curious. Also, GPA requirements for the BA in MT at UCLA are generally lower than the rest of the school. Audition rules.

Woo Hoo Rider recommendation letter on file! I am worried about the recommendations because his main recommender got fed up with Common App and just started mailing stuff…Anyway all good with Rider its listed as on file. Hopefully CCM shows up soon too, that’s all that is pending.

Sent in Otterbein prescreen last night…gulp. I will try not to obsessively check on this!

MTMajorCook, I don’t know if this will make you feel better, but we seriously didn’t even KNOW last year that you could check to see if the prescreen had been viewed on Acceptd. I think it was a couple of weeks before he heard back. And yep, it was really stressful, but I guess it was good practice for waiting to hear admissions results in the spring! Sounds like your son is making good progress, and I hope you’ll let us know how things go with that prescreen.

Thanks Times3 - I don’t know how to check either, I just asked you and abparent in the Otterbein section LOL! I will definitely let you know, its exciting and scary at the same time! If he gets through we are going to try to schedule for the 12/7 date. Otterbein is having a dance performance on the 6th so that will be great to see. He is very excited about this school. Fingers crossed!

I do appreciate the prescreen process, if he isn’t a good fit its good not to have to waste the time and money traveling.

Yay MtMajorCook! We aren’t there yet for producing the pre-screen. It is a big step to know your son will be showing his artistic “stuff”. Makes it all very real!

Times3, how do you check to see if a prescreen has been viewed on Accept’d? Just curious cause D has only submitted one that they would check and 4 others that want her whole a application before making a decision.

Hahaha, apologies, but I’m the mom who DOESN"T know how to see if they’ve been viewed! We had no idea last year! We just waited in dreadful suspense. In fact, I’m the mom who didn’t realize my son’s prescreen was not successfully submitted; we hung on for a month before investigating and realizing that one of the components had not in fact gone through. Resubmitted everything and heard back from Otterbein in about 2 weeks, I think. Fortunately we had done it quite early in the fall the first time, so the resubmission was still early October. He did the December audition date and saw the dance concert that night, which was absolutely incredible. My son isn’t an MT kid, but he was bowled over by that concert.

Was it abparent who mentioned seeing how many times a submission on Acceptd was viewed? I’m kind of glad we didn’t know last year–I would’ve obsessed! Hang in there and good luck!

Thanks for the reply Times3. MTMajorCook PM’d me but not sure if you got my reply - think I’m one reply short of being able to PM someone although that may only have to do with sending the initial PM. If my reply didn’t go through, thanks MTMajorCook and no, no tabs in D’s Accept’d screens so wait we will…

MajorCook . . . I tried to log in to Accptd to view my daughter’s old account but it’s not available any longer. I’m trying to remember . . . and I’m not completely clear, but I seem to recall that it was pretty obvious . . . there was just the word “Views” and I clicked on it and could see how many times it had been viewed and it also said “Comments”. We couldn’t see the comments, but we could see the number of comments. Unless the site has changed a great deal, I would think that it’s pretty similar. HOWEVER, the “viewed” feature may be disabled by request of the schools. ??? Sorry I’m not more helpful.

When my D submitted her prescreen to Otterbein, the Accept’d screen said submitted but she got an email from the school saying that they were missing components of the submission. I called Accept’d and a lovely young man re-opened D’s submission and helped me add the missing pieces (I swear they were there when she hit the submit button!). Within 15 minutes D got a follow up email from Otterbein saying that all was well now and she would hear about an audition within 2 weeks.
While I was on the phone with Accept’d I made him check to see if Young Arts had both of her pieces uploaded as well as the written application. That was already ok fortunately so one less thing to obsess over today, the YA deadline date.

We were up until 3a this morning getting the YoungArts videos uploaded. Nothing like pushing a deadline! Ugh! This was our fist Acceptd experience. Good training god next year…

MTMom2015 - We were doing the same thing with Young Arts! Ugh - it was certainly a frustrating process, and it took a few times to find a browser that would comply.
