We just got back from the Earlham Preview weekend. It was wonderful. Everything was so well organized, and everybody was so friendly and kind. I definitely think that it’s my son’s first choice – he had a wonderful time.

I would imagine that they do this for every kid, but we were very pleased that the young man who acted as our son’s host was a geology major with an interest in environmental studies (exactly what our son is planning on majoring in). He was a wonderful host, so easygoing and nice. Every aspect of the visit was exactly what we would have hoped for.

Now, to just get his grade in calculus up to the mark. We just found out that his second attempt at his ACT has improved by 7 points, so I think that puts him fairly solidly in the running.

schleppenheimer, glad to hear it went well. I agree with nygiant; if he hasn’t already, your son should fire off an email to Admissions thanking them, and expressing his continued interest.

I think Earlham does attempt to pair up the “prospies” with hosts who have some similar interest. My D was hosted by a girl who was in the extracurricular group D wanted to know about, and I think that was important in her final decision.

Let us know how the rest of this process goes. Good luck to your son. I have a good feeling!

My son put in his common app for Earlham a couple of days ago. The application deadline on most college information/comparison websites still says November 1, and Earlham’s own website says November 1, but in my son’s acknowledgement letter (saying that they have indeed received his application) Earlham said that the deadline is November 15. Hoping this helps anyone out there who still wants to apply.

HE GOT IN!!! I’m so pleased for him. Not only that, but my son got a couple of scholarships too – amounting to $12,500/year - which is incredibly nice. He needed this ego boost. It’s been a rough year for him (something I’ll talk about later with y’all – I’ll be needing advice – but I don’t’ want to write negative stuff on such a great day), but he’s walking on clouds today.

I would love to see some other Earlham people on here… but I can see from the 2017 thread that usually people don’t post until late January…

Schleppenheimer, Congrats on your son’s acceptance to Earlham. Did he apply early action or early decision? My daughter appliedEA, but I don’t think she has been checking as she doesn’t expect anything until January.

Does anyone know when EA decisions will be released? I’ve seen in previous years that they usually come out around the end of January, and if it’s the same this year, the next few weeks are going to be REALLY long.

At least I’ll get to visit campus over MLK Day weekend for the Fly-In program, although it really sucks that this is the weekend before finals weeks at my HS.

I got my acceptance letter from Earlham today in the mail (I did early acceptance)! It’s my first college acceptance! =D I’m jubilant but I’m not sure if I can afford it. My acceptance letter came with a “Earlham Trustee Scholarship”. Does anyone know how that works with financial aid? The letter says “Scholarships are applied toward students’ demonstrated financial need” but I am puzzled as to what that means.

Collision, merit and need-based aid can stack on top of each other. If you’re going to apply for financial aid, then your merit scholarship has already paid off at least some of your financial need. Hopefully Earlham can take care of whatever you have left.

I’m in the same boat as you. I’ve also been accepted EA, and with a $15,000 per year merit scholarship! The acceptance letter was also really touching; the college cited some of my biggest EC commitments, and even some other reasons for accepting me I couldn’t quite identify. I can only guess they came from my recommendations.

I had an amazing time at the Winter Fly-In over the weekend, so I really hope Earlham can come through for me with the rest of the aid I need!
