My son got his today. 33 on ACT (34 Math, 35 Science), National AP Scholar (including 5s on BC Calculus, Biology, Physics-Mechanics, Physics-E&M, and Computer Science), NMF commended, Varsity Basketball, two-year hospital volunteer, paid work experience, 3.53/4.0 cumulative GPA from one of the toughest high schools in America, 3.88 junior year.

My daughter M got hers as well yesterday

3.89, 4.2 weighted from a school that has never given a 4.0 in its history. Currently taking college math from University of Illinois Champaign as she completed Calculus 3 as a sophomore.
33 ACT, (Noteworthy, her highest score was 35 in reading so she is well rounded), AP scholar of Distinction, National Hispanic Merit Scholar, Colorado School of Mines Medal of Achievement in Math and Science. Volunteer work and held down a job for two years. 11 years club swimming, four years varsity swimming.

She was also awarded the Rose-Hulman Commitment Scholarship which is full ride tuition? We are a bit in shock since this school was applied to last minute at the recommendation of a friend. I can’t find much on the scholarship, but I am assuming she was given precedence due to her two minority statuses (female and Hispanic) as well as her academic qualifications. Hoping this is real as RHIT is now quickly rising on her list of schools as this offer now outweighs the others she has received.

@Tiptond Congratulations! Have you visited yet? The school has incredible facilities and I recommend a tour. As you can see from RHIT’s profile, it has only a 22% female enrollment. They are very committed to increasing that percentage. Our tour guide was an Hispanic woman from the Chicago area. She loved it at RHIT. She was also a member of an on-campus sorority.

No visit yet, but hoping to afford a trip out (I guess we can’t afford not to.). Like I said, we hadn’t seriously considered the school until this letter arrived. It still seems too good to be true. We were planning on attending Colorado School of Mines which maxes out its merit aid at about $5000 a year because of its selectivity. The letter we got yesterday valued the RHIT scholarship at $177,000 with a possibility of a $50,000 room and board addition in March.

@Beaudreau congratulations to your son as well. I am new to this forum, so excuse my ignorance in tagging you above. Thank you so much for your input.

Congratulations @Beaudreau and @Tiptond.

Son just picked up mail and saw his acceptance packet. 35 ACT, 2290 SAT (12 on essay), NMSF, AP scholar with distinction, lots of volunteer hours and 11 years of music with many awards. 4.6w GPA at a very competitive high school.

We have heard great things about Rose and are planning a visit in Spring.

Congrats to all of your students! Another mom here. Son was accepted, only sent SATs - 710 reading and writing, 770 - math. Still has a 4.0 at this time. Thought Calc BC would change that, but so far, so good! National Hispanic Scholar also and Commended. ECs are mostly with music - marching, concert and jazz band. Drumline captain. He loves Rose, definitely high on the possible list. Just hoping for some kind of merit money. He got in to Case Western with 27k a year. It is more expensive, so some kind of merit would be nice. We visited this summer and he really liked it. The campus and facilities were great. Not too small, really.

How likely is it that any of your students will attend? Most admission decisions don’t come until March, so might be hard to say right now I would guess.

Congrats to the admits (and admit parents)!

I’m a 2013 Rose grad. I really enjoyed my time at Rose and would be happy to answer any questions that you have as you narrow down your college choices - feel free to post or send me a private message.

I’m wondering if anyone has advice about whether or not there could be a disadvantage to sending in deposit prior to merit notices. My son was accepted last month and it’s clear to us that he loves Rose and has suggested that we might send the deposit to “secure” his spot. He still has not heard from several other schools. We will not qualify for financial assistance. Does anyone know whether or not this could reduce the school’s incentive to give him merit money? He is just slightly above average for Rose students regarding his stats so I don’t expect a huge award but it would be nice to get that sticker price down as much as possible since we did not fund his college account for a private college.
Hi @mom2autonut - I don’t think any college expects the deposit before May 1st. Merit scholarships come out mid-March. You could at least see what the offer is before your son makes his final decision. You could still get the deposit in well before May 1st.
I totally understand the anxiety around the process - my best guess right now is my son will pick Rose also. But he knows we need to look at the numbers in March.
Good luck to you and your son!
No reason to send a deposit until the decision is final. Every deposit received on or before May 1st is treated in exactly the same way.
gobeavs, you have been manning the RH posts (often independently) for years. I had the opportunity to meet you a few years ago when my son applied. I was equally impressed with you and RH then. Thanks for all you do for Rose on this public blog. In the end, our son did not choose to go to Rose, but I have always followed RH’s progress which I think is incredible. In some ways I hope it stays a quiet and the “under the radar choice” (mainly for east and west coasters) that it is (but doesn’t deserve to be). In that way it will continue to allow so many great aspiring scientists and engineers a perfect choice in the future. best luck and best regards -
Son accepted! Now waiting to see what merit aid RH has to offer. He received full tuition plus $2500/year at U Alabama and did like the UA campus and its brand new engineering facilities. Good luck to everyone!
Hi! Does anyone know when we should hear back? I read somewhere that the last date was tomorrow, but I haven’t received anything. Logging into the status page shows nothing. Will we be notified by email or mail?
Thanks!
@Erebon: the site says March 15, though I suspect when you receive it depends on where you live (Indiana residents get theirs before Texas residents, for example)
You’ll be notified by physical mail (at least, that’s how I and other applicants seem to have been first notified). Best of luck!
Got early acceptance back in December by physical mail. Sent in deposit in February since it was his first choice. Just got merit award/financial by mail today. Suspect based on other posts these will trickle in over the next week or two.
Got merit aid/financial letter yesterday. Adds up to about 1/2 of tuition. Very nice. So son will have to weigh this with other financial offers. Also have to plan a visit.
My son also got $20K per year scholarship today.
However, paying $40K per year is still a lot.
Yes, we also got just under $20K. I would love for my son to go to RHIT, but it is quite a bit more than his other options.
My son was offered $16,500 merit. I had it in my mind that the total was in the low 50’s, so I was surprised and disappointed that it’s over 60.
