Have you guys started application/essays?

BC uses Common Application, right? I haven’t started the actual application yet. I’ve looked at the essay prompts though. I’m struggling trying to figure out what I should write on though.

@student197 Yes, BC is on the common app but also has the 400 word supplement. (Which is on their website). They have some pretty tricky questions - no idea what to write about.

Prompt 1 seems pretty generic and dangerous. Prompt 2 seems geared more towards arts and science majors (not business like me). Prompt 3 could be good, and so could prompt 4. I think I will be writing a couple drafts for each just to test it out.

@Eniam666 Yes, I’ve looked at the supplements too! I don’t think I could write about prompt 1 – too little knowledge here. I think prompt 2 would be ideal for someone that already has that “it” item, but I think it’d be difficult to go out and try to find my inspirational work of art by force now. I’m currently debating between prompt 3 and 4, leaning more towards 3. But that’s a good idea! I’ll try writing and see where it takes me. I think I will begin doing some of my supplements (like BC that have them released already) because I don’t know where to start with my Common App one.

Good luck to you!

Do you think our chances are better by applying early? Or are they about the same (or possibly even worse)? Is BC your top choice or one of your top choices?

@student197 Yes! Lots of drafting…

APPARENTLY, this is just from what I have heard from other schools, the early admissions programs do have a higher acceptance rate. That being said, it also probably has a higher quality applicant pool - students who know what they are doing.
BC is probably tied for my top choice, my other top choice is Georgetown - another early action. I am looking for great business undergraduate programs. What are you looking to major in?

@Eniam666 Let’s hope! Haha, I think it’ll be a real confidence booster if I do get in early. And if I don’t… well then. I may need to find another safety just in case. (Btw, I am not implying that BC is a safety AT ALL. I just mean, I should probably lower my expectations even further.)

I think BC is my 2nd choice right now with Bowdoin being first. But I can not do ED so thank goodness for BC’s EA. I’m interested in Computer Science or really any STEM field right now. But I’m also interested in LACs which kind of contradicts. Though I have my interests right now, I’m trying not to limit my schools too much based on my current intended major.

@student197 Yes, haha, probably a very good idea. Who knows what you will want a year or two from now. I lived in Maine for the first 15 years of my life so I totally support Bowdoin!
Are you thinking about any other early action schools?

@Eniam666 Ah, what is Maine like?! I’m worried I won’t be able to adjust. Haha but I did prefer a colder environment. (I die in the sun.)

I think University of Notre Dame is an EA school? But I’m not sure if I’ll even apply there at all. It was initially on my list, but something made me cross it off. I should have written it down… I don’t remember what that something is. Haha so it’s back on my list for now.
Are you applying early anywhere else besides Georgetown?

@student197 Maine is amazing! Everything about it. The late fall and early spring can be rough when it is too cold to do anything outside but there is not enough snow on the ground to ski. Definitely go skiing as much as possible! And then the summers are just hot enough to enjoy a nice summer dip in the freezing ocean!

I was originally thinking about Notre Dame also but I didn’t really like its location so I crossed it off.

Yes, I will be applying to Villanova, UNC Chapel Hill and UVa early action. Also I will be applying to UT Austin which is rolling admission. I have all but two of my schools early action which is great! Hopefully I will know where I am going by January!

BC is my first choice no contest. I keep hearing mixed things about early action at this particular school. Is it harder to get in EA vs. RD or nah?

@Eniam666 Ah, I’m so excited about Maine… I really want to visit. BC is so close to becoming my top choice. These past few days I got really into it, but Bowdoin is still #1 for me. And yeah, I’m not sure if I’d even want to end ND even if I were to somehow get in. And you’re so lucky you have so many EA schools! That’ll take some of the stress off for you. Haha

@JellyFishh Ah, that’s the question we’re all wondering about. I would think EA would be okay as long as you’re a pretty competitive applicant. I feel like if you would have gotten in RD, but there are too many competitive applicants already in EA, the least they would do is defer you. I doubt someone who could have gotten in RD will be straight up rejected in EA. So hopefully it’ll be better (or the same) to apply EA!

What are everybody’s stats?

Stats:
Female
Asian
WA

GPA: 3.95 (unweighted) / 4.47 (weighted) but not sure… will have 13 APs done by end of senior year
SAT: 2280 (CR: 710, M: 770, W: 800) one sitting
SAT II: Math 2 770, Chemistry 700 (Btw, would it be bad to not send in my subject test scores? I know if I send in SAT, then I don’t HAVE to… but is it one of those recommendations that are actually “required”?)
ECs quite average - 4 year varsity sport (state qualifier each year), few clubs, few positions, some community service, etc.
Awards - Potential NFSF, AP Scholar with Distinction

@Eniam666 What about your stats?

Male
White
North Carolina

GPA: 4.0uw
GPA: 4.33w (5.0 for APs - never got lower than an A in any class)

SAT: 2100 (not great I know)
M- 770
W- 700
R -630

APs: Euro, Calculus AB, US History, Language and Composition, *Gov, *Calc BC, *French, *Computer Science
(all other classes are honors)

EC
Baseball, cycling, Model UN, piano/saxophone, president of class, etc.
Several leadership positions in each of these

Several awards and recognition.

Work Experience - baseball stadium

@student197 you have killer SAT I and SAT IIs so I would say just send them! Can’t hurt unless it is a matter of money, then it might not be necessary

@Eniam666 Your stats look good! I wasn’t sure about the chemistry that’s why. I could retake in October (or take some other subject tests) but I feel like I would have forgotten a lot of material by then.

Do you guys think BC tends to look at academics (class rigor, rank, GPA, scores, etc.) heavily over other factors? Clearly, at top 20 schools and Ivy’s ECs and other subjective factors are huge since everyone is at the top of their class, but will having pretty weak ECs (in CC standards) be super bad at BC?

BC is definitely into the “whole person” because that’s the point of the Jesuit education. In my opinion, if your GPA and test scores fit in BCs range, apply early. If you’re hoping that your essays, extracurriculars, or some other factor will help camouflage a not so great GPA or test scores, apply regular. BC kids are definitely well-rounded rather than nerdy though, so good scores will help your application but they aren’t everything.

I’m just happy my school gets interviews ;)

I’m just happy my school gets interviews

@krpoltax
Can you explain what you mean by that?

@jpm50 BC offers interviews to seniors at Boston Latin School and BC High. I’m fairly certain they do not offer interviews to anybody else. Honestly not sure why though haha.

Ohh okay, I was going to say… I thought they don’t offer interviews.

Well, I hope I get into BC. My mom does not really like Maine (first choice), but she does like Boston.
