@quirkyswife I sincerely hope your student is admitted. I do have to say though that two years ago when my daughter applied, it was crystal clear that the Nov 1 date was incredibly important. It was posted online, mentioned countless times at any event we attended, and on pieces of mail that we received. Soo unless it has changed that much in two years, I think proper notice was given. Also, I get that you and everyone else is anxious to hear admission decisions, but if the website said by April 1, then I’m assuming that’s a truthful statement. So tick tock tick tock…be patient.
Absolutely. It was always posted as November 1. If you go now to UMD admissions, go to Apply, and Look at Freshman Application Deadlines, it calls out November 1 as the priority deadline. This hasn’t changed in a few years, and I even told a few of my kids’ friends about that deadline this past year when they were applying. It wasn’t some secret knowledge as several of my students asked for letters of recommendation in years past, and I knew what the deadline was.
Well we have two days to go. We just might get it soon. Lets hope for the best.
This info was made available through brochures, college reps, college visits, and the WEBSITE (YES). If your school uses Naviance, the deadline is clearly posted there, too. This info is even on several college websites like College Board. A quick google search will get you your answer. They said that the deadline for priority is Nov 1. On the UMD website, they said that you won’t be considered for scholarships if you don’t apply by priority. This hasn’t changed in past years.
If for some reason, you couldn’t find ANY of this information anywhere, you could have contacted the admissions office; they respond promptly and politely. Seriously, none of you should be blaming UMD for this stuff.
It was not my intent to offend or ruffle feathers. And I do understand that “priority decision” typically takes precedence over regular decision. Also, without question, the Nov 1 date was clearly posted. However, the parameters were not clearly defined or advertised (as noted above). The UMD application page simply states Priority application deadline is Nov 1 (you will receive a decision by Jan 31) and Regular decision deadline is Jan 20 (you will receive a decision by Apr 1). This is similar to most “Early Action” guidelines at other schools. Yet, from what I am hearing, it appears that at UMD the Nov 1 applicants fill the majority of freshman spots, and very few spaces remain for the Jan 20 applicants. To me, this seems unjust. Also, Priority applicants were informed of their decision on Jan 26 (or even earlier) - a full week prior than promised. While Regular decision applicants are now down to the wire (appears a little biased). Regardless of my rhetoric, I do believe UMD is an extraordinary school! To all those hard working students anxiously awaiting some good news this week – Good Luck!!!
My daughter also didn’t know that the majority of incoming freshmen would be selected from the Priority pool – we just thought it was an early way to apply. And I was with her on the tour, where for sure nothing was said.
I was also unaware that most freshmen were selected priority. I went on the tour and to the information session, too, and they didn’t mention it. I didn’t find out until it was too late. I really think they should make it more clear because I definitely would have applied priority if I knew all the circumstances. I’m just really nervous now because UMD is my number 1 and now I’m afraid they won’t have a spot for me
Try not to stress. You will end up where you’re supposed to be and you will shine! I promise…
Finger’s crossed for those hoping to get in and spread the word to your fellow H.S. Juniors - NOV 1 !
College Board says, “Applying to an ED or EA plan is most appropriate for a student who: Has researched colleges extensively. Is absolutely sure that the college is the first choice.” This seems to be saying that you can’t apply early to more than one college. On the other hand, it seems that at least at UMD, Early Action is the new RD, and RD is the new “You’re Late!” Is that only UMD? Or have all calendars shifted?
I understand being disappointed about missing the priority deadline. It is a shame. My point is simply that the information was certainly available for those that took the time to find out. When it is stated that the process is lame, that they need to get with it, and are sooo not cool, it seems to imply that the problem is with UMD. I believe the burden is on the applicants to find out the application and admissions policy of each school. It is clearly stated that in order to have the best chance of being admitted and to be considered for special programs and/or merit scholarships, apply by the Nov 1 priority deadline.
When I visited UMD it was made extremely clear to me to apply by the early deadline. In the information session it was stated about five times, that if you were serious about going to school at UMD you should apply by priority. Also on the tour after, the young man leading the tour also mentioned it numerous times and really stressed the importance of this as well! This being said despite UMD having an extremely competitive year I’m sure that this will not destroy your chances of getting in. If you are spring admitted you can always do the the freshman connection program as well! Good luck to everyone
There’s nothing we can do now so there’s no use in arguing. Let’s keep this thread about regular decision information where we update news on the RD notification. I feel like today might be the day we finally hear! Crossing my fingers
crossing my fingers too!
UMD is really the school for me. However my stats don’t say much so I don’t think I will get in. Good luck to all of you!
I know that UMD only looks at SAT math and reading but do they do that also for the ACT?
We can now see and access the housing application on my S’s portal. Does this mean anything?
It means it’s LIKELY your son did get in. Please report back when you get the decision posted on the portal and let everyone know. Again, this glitch has been there for a long time, and I’ve not heard of anyone seeing that housing app and not getting in. I don’t want to get your hopes up falsely…just going by all of the reporting in various threads over the past couple of years.
Thank you Lenmonster! I will send an update if/when we get any additional news or changes today. I would guess this means decisions may finally be revealed today. Hoping so! Good luck to you all!
Well, either today or tomorrow My son got that app as a transfer last year and then I had researched it. Anxiously awaiting the same for my daughter who is attempting to transfer this year. I believe decisions get posted usually between about 4 and 5pm.
