We are also behind our original schedule for shooting prescreens. D has the lead in the fall All-School Musical, which is a huge deal, and that has basically blown up our schedule until mid-October. She is handling it with aplomb, while I am a nervous wreck. Those prescription meds left over from the kid’s wisdom teeth operations are looking more and more tempting every day…

@EmsDad Better save them…it only gets worse… (and I love black licorice)

That’s great, @EmsDad ! What’s the musical? We have decided to keep all of the senior year activities… you are only a senior once, right? So, it’ll be 3 plays, show choir, news ancor, etc. And making all the application/audition stuff fit in somehow. Maybe this crazy full schedule is good prep for life as a BFA student? In the meantime, you could earn some $$$ for tuition with those meds… street value is probably pretty high! My med of choice these days is wine. Lots of wine.

EmsDad, son did all his activities senior year. I told his Guidance Counselor that I would need a Valium pump to get through the year He did fine and has many happy memories.

My D is just coming off one show and is in rehearsals for her HS musical (she is playing the Witch in Into the Woods). It is the constant juggle to just enjoy life and regular activities and then to layer on the whole application process. Oh, and what about the thirteen year old twins in the house, too? I think I am bearing the brunt of the worrying about the college stuff, but my daughter is being great about doing what she needs to do when she needs to do them.

It’s official … first audition is done and in the books!

@babybett have two friends in the program at MIlikin and I was accepted there! It is a great program! Also Jodi Benson who voiced Ariel in “The Little Mermaid” went there and ironically Sierra Bogess originated Ariel when “The Little Mermaid” went to broadway! Sierra was was also Christine in Phantom with Norm Lewis this past summer and she originated Christine in the sequel to Phantom “Love Never Dies”. Sierra is also on the 25th anniversary dvd. She also is coming back to Milikin sometime this week I think…but yeah! That’s Millikin! There is way more than those people too!

@KaMaMom in past years three was a discussion thread called “audition day” or something like that, where everyone would post the details and synopsis of the experience from each school… Maybe you can be the first to start one for our audition season? I, for one, would love to hear all about it!

If ANYONE has ANY questions about the process and colleges and stuff, I am a current MT major and freshman at CCPA. I just went through this a year a go and it’s all pretty fresh in my mind! I know that this can all be VERY tiresome as a parent AND as a student. I went through this while doing shows and show choir compettitions and school and clubs and piano and getting my audition stuff together. Most future MT students WILL have a grip on all of it because if there is one necessary skill that you need in theatre, it’s learning how to juggle multiple things at once and learning fast and by senior year a lot of kids already have it thus why they remain calm. so MESSAGE ME!!!

D received her first academic acceptance today! Only the first step on a long road, but it was nice to get a big envelope marked “Congratulations.”

My D also got her first academic acceptance today, @EmsDad ! However, hers came in the form of an email telling her to be on the lookout for a big envelope coming soon so it must not be from the same school. By coincidence, we had a trip scheduled to this school this weekend and are catching one of their musicals. Very excited for this visit!

@addicted2MT - Congratulations! We board our first plane on November 8.

Our first trip will be Elon at the end of the month! Let’s get this show on the road!

Does anyone know what the chances of getting denied a prescreen are? Just sent in a couple prescreens and wanting to know the likelihood of not getting callbacks. Thanks!

@tylerjohn that’s just as impossible to predict as whether or not you’ll be accepted. It really depends on what the school is looking for. I’m not sure if we even know how closely each school looks at a prescreen. I assume programs that have had prescreens in place for a long time have it down to a science by now and some of the newer prescreen programs may have a little bit of a learning curve. I still can’t believe CCM and CMU don’t screen. Good luck!! The waiting is so hard I know. Otterbein and PSU answered quickly last year, not sure if they are on your list or not.

I think they don’t want to miss out on someone just because they might not come across on a prescreen as well. There are some stage actors that do not come across well on film/camera. I would imagine there are students who come across great in person but might not have been given a chance if they didn’t stand out on the prescreen

From department folks we talked to on tours over the summer, it sounded like some programs err on the side of the student and are only eliminating those students that they are clearly not interested in. We heard really quickly from PSU still waiting on Ithaca and Indiana which won’t be until December if they are consistent with past years. Break a leg!

@broadway95 - for that reason, I think most schools err on the side of passing someone on their prescreen if they see even just a small reason for doing so. They are just trying to whittle their actual audition numbers down to a more manageable size …but they don’t want to miss out on someone either. So prescreens will weed out the ones they definitely don’t have a need for.
BIG REMINDER!!! Just remember, not passing a prescreen should not be considered a verdict on whether you are talented. It simply means that you are not what that program is currently looking for. There are lots of stories on here of people who didn’t pass, for example, the Michigan prescreen but were accepted at NYU. Or someone who didn’t pass the Indiana prescreen but got in Ithaca. Just keep working hard to prepare for your auditions. And keep believing in yourself. You just never know where you may end up!
Good luck to all!

My D only had one pre-screen last year (she’s an acting major.) It was for Ithaca. She got rejected. That was really hard at the time. I was terrified we were making a big mistake. She just shrugged it off.
But since now she is at UNCSA, her first choice school and loving it, I can assure you that a pre-screen rejection is not the end of the road by any means! Chin up! Move on! Apply to another school instead!

Just for the record I have not heard back from any prescreens just kind of curious how many people they cut. Thanks for all the knowledge and kind words :)
