Class of 2019 University of Michigan EA Results Thread (stats)

@anxious00‌, Thank you very much!! I applied on October 24th and sent in all my test scores since late Sep

Do you guys think it would be advantageous to send UMich my AP scores? I got a lot of 3s, but i got a few 5s and 4s. I just self studied a bunch.

Decision: Accepted

Other
Applied for Financial Aid? Yes
State (if domestic applicant): MI
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public, Mid-Size Suburban
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: $80000+
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Legacy

Reflection
Strengths: Test Scores, GPA, Essays
Weaknesses: Curriculum Rigor for Junior Year
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Stats slightly above 75th percentile for CoE, Strong Subjectives
Where else you are applying or have already applied: Carnegie Mellon University, Kettering University (Full Scholarship), University of Washington
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: The bulk of the “underqualified” students seem to be for LSA. If U-M is purposely rejecting overqualified apps, it should be ashamed. Having a strong student body and integrity is more important having a slightly higher ranking due to gamed stats (high yield, low acceptance). Also, OOS students should not be at such a disadvantage. STILL PUMPED I GOT IN!!!

Decision: Accepted

College: LSA (comp sci, econ, math)

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 2370 (800 CR, 770 M, 800 W)
ACT (breakdown): didn’t take
SAT II (place score in parentheses): 800 Math II, 800 Latin, 800 US History, 790 Chemistry
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): major writing award (not naming to protect identity), National Merit, National AP Scholar, an award for girls in computing.

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): Lots of leadership (founded and taught economics class, mentor at Coder Dojo, teaching assistant for several AP classes), paid job at library, various computer science extracurriculars (Google Code-In, volunteering with CS competition for girls, volunteering at startup, etc.), music (piano, choir).
Job/Work Experience: Library page
Volunteer/Community Service: See ECs, plus 400 hours volunteering at the library from ages 12-16.
Summer Activities: Economics seminar, government/business camp, taking care of grandparents, working

Teacher Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):: 10, 6 or 7 (I’m not as close to this teacher)
Counselor Rec (rating 1-10, details):: 10/10 (written by my parents, since I’m homeschooled)
Additional Rec (rating 1-10, details):: 7/10 (complimentary rec from my boss)
Interview: none

Other
Applied for Financial Aid? Yes
State (if domestic applicant): Michigan
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Homeschool
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: $70-80k
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): legacy, parent works at U-M

Reflection
Strengths: high stats, legacy status, leadership, good essays, difficult courseload
Weaknesses: I still feel like my ECs and awards were slightly weak. (It was harder to participate in extracurriculars since I’m homeschooled.)
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think that high stats and some unique extracurriculars got me in!
Where else you are applying or have already applied: deferred from Princeton, accepted to Alabama with full-tuition+, accepted to George Mason with 10k scholarship. Also applying to UChicago, Rice, Stanford, WashU, Harvard, Rochester, and a few other safety schools.
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: Don’t be discouraged by the deferrals! It’s so frustrating, but it sounds like the problem is theirs, not yours. Hoping for good news for all of you next year! (After this whole process, I’m never going to judge a person by what college they attended. It is so chancy!).

Accepted!

College: LSA (preferred admission to Ross)

[ b]Objective:**
SAT I (breakdown):
ACT (breakdown): 30 (33G 26M 31R 29S)
SAT II (place score in parentheses):
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.82
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): top 20%
AP (place score in parentheses): none yet.
IB (place score in parentheses):
Senior Year Course Load: AP psychology, AP micro, calculus, epidemiology, global education. 2nd semester ecology, AP psychology, marketing 2, global education
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Global Education academic awards, honor roll, NHS, DECA state finalist. (Nothing major like I see on here all of the time!)

[ b]Subjective:**
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): Students Against Destructive Decisions (VP), Class Council(Treasurer), DECA, Model UN, NHS, Anti Drinking/drug program citywide helper. Maybe one or two other insignificant things.
Job/Work Experience: no “job” but I started my own online business. I think this played a pivotal role in my admission. I sell jewelry online, and expressed my true passion my whole life (and how I pursued my business interests beyond academia. I think they want to know you actually enjoy what you’re studying there.)
Volunteer/Community Service: Lots of anti drinking and drug stuff with SADD. Lots of other volunteer work at the library, a medical office, and tutoring. Maybe 100 hours.
Summer Activities: none except maybe sell jewelry more.
Essays (rating 1-10, details):: 9.5 honestly. They were really solid, I spent like an entire day writing them.
Teacher Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):: first rec was amazing, very open minded teacher who admired my work ethic and artistic abilities, wrote a beautiful letter!
Counselor Rec (rating 1-10, details):: 7, don’t know her.
Additional Rec (rating 1-10, details):: 6, pretty cookie cutter rec. However another kid I know that got in (of the 10 or so kids who get accepted to uofm from my school) with the almost exact same letter from the same teacher… Haha! Maybe it’s good luck.

[ b]Other**
Applied for Financial Aid? I will
State (if domestic applicant): in state 30 minutes away
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: medium/large public
Ethnicity: white
Gender: female
Income Bracket: 25-50k
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): first generation college

[ b]Reflection**
Strengths: Essays that directly explained how I truly have a passion for this area, due to my own business, as well as how much of a critical thinker I am (one of my answers to the essay prompts “what do you challenge” was just about how I push the boundaries in my ideas. I wasn’t sure if it would sound pretentious or cocky, however it’s seemed to have worked!)
Weaknesses: ACT, haven’t taken any advanced classes that were AP specifically, until this year.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: because my essays showed that I have great critical thinking skills, communication skills, and a passion for my area of study.
Where else you are applying or have already applied: U of M Dearborn(3k) Wayne State Honors College(7k), Madonna (16k. almost full ride… But their b-program is a joke). Rejected nowhere, and thankfully U of M wasn’t the first!
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: I think you have to market yourself. In all fields, I believe you have to have a good work ethic, good communication skills, and a way you pursued your passion outside of academia.

Good luck! (I believe everything is luck/coincidence. Kids with stats and awards infinitely higher than me got deffered. So I blame it all on luck. All you can do is make yourself interesting. Don’t bore them.)

Reflection
Strengths: Course load, essay, internship (very out of the obx)
Weaknesses: GPA (darn you spanish and Physics!)
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: no clue!
Where else you are applying or have already applied: Berekely, Northwestern, WashU, Georgetown, Cornell, USC, UCLA, Boston College, Penn
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: I got accepted into a very good school! I’m pretty satisfied.

Looking at the stats posted so far, there has been a pretty wide range of students admitted so far, statistically speaking, but the majority were, as I expected (and unlike many here seem to think), stellar students with elite university academic credentials. The sample size is limited so far (33), but it is consistent with my expectations. There is no evidence that Michigan is avoiding accepting “Ivy League” type applicants.

GPA (unweighed)
3.9+: 16

3.8-3.89: 9

3.7-3.79 : 6

3.6-3.69: 0

Sub 3.6: 2

2250+/33+ SAT/ACT: 15

2100-2240/31-32 SAT/ACT: 8

1950-2090/28-30 SAT/ACT: 6

Sub 1950 SAT/sub 28 ACT: 4

Even though thisis a limited sampling it’s very close to how their final scatter will look I suspect. If individual colleges would break-out the statistics it would paint a fairly accurate picture. Through the years I’ve known some exceptionally talented artists and musicians who could barely scrape a 26 or 27 on their ACT which I could contrast with young people in COE I know who had sky high GPAs and standardized test scores. The campus is a wonderfully diverse group of people with different interests and abilities.
