Hey guys! This is just the discussion thread for ED applicants to Pomona!! (We can post our stats once we get our decisions in a separate thread) How is everyone feeling about their application/chances? Is there any part of your application that you’re feeling uncertain about? For me, that’s definitely my GPA and maybe test scores.
Last year, the decision came out on the 9th for Questbridge applicants and 12th for regular applicants (I think).
@ravenclaws we meet again. I’m very nervous although I know I did everything I could. I am full IB with a perfect GPA, but my ACT score is only a 30 :(( , probably should have studied. I feel as if this years pool of applicants are going to be far more competitive after Forbes ranked them #1.
@RainaJ Ahh good luck!! And I definitely feel you with test scores! I had to submit my SAT scores which were 1900 and 2000… And hm, do you think there will be more people applying? I think Pomona is still relatively unknown to people.
Just took this from wikipedia but for anyone interested, “For the Class of 2019, Pomona accepted 834 students from a record applicant pool of 8,099 applicants.” --> general stat
This is from The Student Life and more applicable to ED applicant pool: “Pomona College received fewer ED applications this year, decreasing from 736 in 2013-2014 to 717 in this years applicant pool. The admit rate for this years ED candidates stayed around 19-19.5 percent, with an acceptance level roughly equal to last year. Students admitted through ED make up approximately 37 percent of their overall class.”
Does Pomona superscore? I had to submit all of my SAT scores, but they say they will only look at the highest scores from all the tests, so what’s the deal?
Hey thought I’d jump in to, as I’m an ED applicant. And yes @Comrod33, Pomona does superscore the SAT and the ACT. My hunch is Pomona had a surge of ED1 applicants, and it’ll be interesting to see whether admissions accept a larger percentage of their class through ED.
I went on a campus tour in August and the Admissions Director said last year they had an acceptance rate of about 10% like you guys said. I am actually going to play volleyball at Pomona so I definitely have that advantage but I would have been extremely nervous getting in without the sport even though people believe I could have done it. My GPA has always been my weak point because I didn’t focus on getting straight As until junior year. However, I am doing the full IB with 4 HLs and am still yet to take a single class that wasn’t Honors/AP/IB in my life so maybe I have just been extremely hard on myself.
@golfcashoahu I doubt they’d accept a higher percentage because I think Pomona really wants to keep the class size small. So if they do accept a bigger percentage of ED1 applicants, they wouldn’t be able to accept that many from ED2 or regular.
Yeah, they already accepted more than they should have last year so I doubt they’ll be taking very many over their maximum. I read the other day that during ED, they only accept like 80 people and I think that was including Questbridge :((
@ravenclaws I think it’s definitely drawn attention. When I toured it, almost all of the students that were in the group were from the East Coast (I’m from California) and were drawn to it because of “Ivy Status.” I think it’s building a huge reputation on the East Coast, and the people that need to know it, know it.
@RainaJ it was the Class of 2018 that was over-enrolled, not the Class of 2019. See the profile of the class here: http://www.pomona.edu/sites/default/files/pomona-college-admissions-2015-16-profile.pdf. For the Class of 2019 there were 136 admitted ED, plus 13 Questbridge match, 20 Posse, 8 Prior Gap Year Matriculants and 223 Regular Decision (including some from the waitlist) for a total class of exactly 400. (By contrast the Class of 2018 was 450 due to an unanticipated jump in yield. http://tsl.news/news/4600/).
Great @Corinthian! Shows how long I’ve avoided the Pomona website after the PTSD of ED due dates. Those numbers are way different then what I remember, guess I’ll have to go review and give myself an inch more of hope.
I believe Pomona fills up 35% of its class with EDI, EDII, and perhaps that number also contains Questbridge. Still, I think ED1 is the best path for students that have identified Pomona as their #1. An admissions officer told me they are expecting 10,000 applications, which would drive the acceptance rate down to about 8% this year.
If you look at the numbers in my post #10, ED acceptances 136/400= 34% of the class is filled. If you add in Questbridge and Posse then it’s 169/400= 42% of the class.
Hey everyone.I am an African kid from Kenya, East Africa(Go Lupita) sorry I digress. My concern is SAT II since on Tuesday I found out I had a 540 in Lit & a 580 in Bio M though in my defense, on the morning of the test my dad was in surgery & it was all I could think of(he lost his left eye but he’s fine now diabetes is no joke ppl).I got an 1810 in my SATs first attempt but that’s fine since here ppl get even into Harvard with as low as 1750s (true story, lucky dude).Do I still have a chance or should I just settle for University of Nairobi??
@please5-do-not% Did you have the SAT 2 scores automatically sent to Pomona? I honestly don’t think like an SAT 2 score will immediately tip you over the edge to being rejected, if that makes sense. While it might add to your application, it won’t like convince the admission officers that’ you’re not a right fit. You can still apply for pomona ED/RD as well as University of Nairobi and then wait for the results and see what you should do? There’s no reason not to apply!
