Class of 2020 Merit Scholarship Recipients

@dudefromnowhere Thank you so much for the information! Still waiting and hoping for a letter for my D!

I received a $60,000 scholarship. School doesn’t rank, 35 ACT, 10 APs, OOS.

I just received my package in the mail today. Full tuition. 96.3 UW GPA. 32 ACT.

is it too late to be considered for full tuition scholarships? As usual, I’ve procrastinated to the last minute applying to Pitt. I’m almost dead set on Hopkins, but if i don’t get in I’ll have to decide between OSU (I’m in columbus) and Pitt. Got an email from them today that I have 1 more day to apply and still be eligible for honors- will OOS scholarships still be on the table as well? thanks!

@ 16cclark January 15 was deadline.

@16cclark, The deadline to automatically be considered for scholarships was January 15. However, outstanding students may still be considered for scholarships.

@hailtopitt1787
i called the office to ask about merit scholarships and they looked at my dd stats and said her test scores were night high enough though everything else was so won’t get a scholarship. YET, I see here that many got scholarships with their test scores being lower than what Pitt told me. SO…this makes or breaks everything. Does Pitt mail you a notice one way or another? Hoping the lady on the phone was wrong.

@cali60 …what was her ACT and class rank? (will have a kid applying next year so trying to gauge stats, etc). I hope something works out for your daughter!

@Cali60, Anyone who is selected to receive a scholarship should hear by March 1 at the latest. Best of luck!

Other than the honors college scholarships there are also a number of named scholarships that might have different criteria.

Most of the students receiving full tuition last year were top of their class and had very high test scores and GPA while taking very rigorous course load.

But even if the minimum published stats are met there is no guarantee that one receives full tuition. The scholarship committee selects these students from a big pool of highly qualified applicants.

I think the incoming class of 2015 had 4,000 freshman students, 1,000 were in the honors college, several hundred received full tuition. Average SAT CR&M of honors students was 1489. So if honors college eligibility starts at 1400 SAT, a lot of students must have had scores well above 1500.

@mommdc (or @hailtopitt1787) do you know how many receive full tuition? i am sure they award to a few more and not all of them attend Pitt

In my D’s letter it said something like 2% of applicants received full tuition.

That was last year. Not sure if it was mentioned in the award letter this year?

Yeah D’s letter says last year 31000 applied and less than 2% were awarded full tuition. So it may be about 600, I was curious how many actually accept the offer?

Yes, I don’t know how many with full tuition actually matriculated.

@hailtopitt1787 According to the Pitt website, all semifinalists for the Stamps scholarship will be interviewed by March 1. My child submitted the Stamps app but hasn’t heard back as to whether she’s moved forward as a semifinalist or not. Should we contact the office?

@RandRDad, As I understand it, you should be hearing very shortly! If you haven’t heard by the end of next week, feel free to call.

@hailtopitt1787 Will you please clarify how scholarships are awarded (merit)? I understand accepted students receive a letter notifying the student of his/her scholarship award several weeks later. However, will the student only receive one letter stating all that the student will be awarded scholarship wise?

For eg. if a student is eligible or has the qualifications for other scholarships based on merit, etc., will they receive (possibly) another mail afterwards. In other words, accepted students who submit scholarships application by 1/15 will receive just One notification of any/all merit scholarship. Is this correct?

Or “can” they expect another award letter afterwards? If so, how late do they notify the students about any more scholarship awards? Is there a difference for IS or OOS? Is there any truth that late apps (1/13) are sometimes not given as much scholarship award?

Many thanks.

@Swissair, Most students who are selected to receive a scholarship should get one letter outlining the award. If they are nominated to apply for the Stamps or Chancellor’s, their initial letter should notify them of that fact. Then those applicants will receive notification as they advance in the application process for Stamps/Chancellors.

The Committee does start the review process earlier (November), but as long as you apply by January 15th, you are automatically reviewed for scholarships.

Those who are selected to receive a scholarship should hear by March 1 at the latest, whether IS or OOS. Hope that helps clarify! If you have any questions about your specific application/account, feel free to contact our office: 412-624-7488 or oafa@pitt.edu.

I have to admit I think our hopes of our S getting merit aid from Pitt are dwindling. We’re a little surprised given his stats, and that he’s received merit aid from all of the other institutions where he’s been accepted.

Our hopes were dashed when he received a financial aid award email yesterday for an unsubsidized Federal Loan in the amount of $5000.

Is it possible that this award notification is separate from any potential merit award or scholarship consideration?

It is my understanding that the Scholarship Committee is separate from the Financial Aid office and that scholarship offers continue to go out until March 1st.
