Class of 2020 Merit Scholarship Recipients

@2asmom, unfortunately, I don’t know anything about the success of the appeals. We’ve had friends who’ve had success at other institutions. We’ll see where the chips fall once my son makes his final decision. We have great offers from a host of other schools, Pitt is definitely in the top 3 insofar has his choices go.

Good luck!

@2asmom, Feel free to call our office and ask to speak to an admissions counselor about appeals. They can discuss the process with you and whether it applies to your particular situation. 412-624-7488.

Thanks

Is there some way we can know that we’re not going to get merit aid & we should stop waiting?

@mikanpater, If you applied on or before January 15 and have not heard by now, it is very likely that the Scholarship Committee has not elected to award you merit aid. According to the Committee, all of the award letters should be out by now. Feel free to contact our office if you have any questions about your specific application (412-624-7488 or oafa@pitt.edu).

We filed an appeal two weeks ago and included the scholarships from other schools to show difference in costs. Just received an email, they won’t offer us anymore than the initial 10k. So bummed! He won’t be able to go to Pitt now

@pjm1234 that’s disappointing. Do you mind sharing which schools offered your son $?

Ohio state offered $18,000. UB (in state) offered $5,000. Pitt $10,000. Admitted to all 3 honors engineering. Total cost after scholarships UB $17,000…Ohio $21,000…Pitt $34,000.

We filed an appeal as well and my DD was not offered any additional money. She still wants to visit for an admitted student day but Pitt went from #1 to the bottom of her list. Really frustrating.

Full tuition scholarship at Pitt especially for engineering is very competitive.

The Pitt honors college had an average SAT CR&M of 1489 last year.

Even if you have the minimum stats you are not guaranteed to receive full tuition, last year about 2% of applicants did, that’s about 500-600. The engineering school alone has about 300 students and the whole honors college 800 or more.

Yes I know it’s quite competitive. Even if he didn’t qualify for full tuition another 8 to 10k would have made it a possibility. Being over $10,000 a year more than OSU or over $40,000 over 4 years is too much to swallow. If Pitts program was that much better than OSU’s I could see it but it isn’t.

Does anyone know if the “Panther Pride Award” is considered a scholarship, or is it considered part of the financial aid package only?

From what I’ve heard it is a need based grant.

The Panther Pride award is a renewable, need-based grant.

We just visited Pitt this week and had a great tour and visit. We are almost home and I just sat down to read the campus newspaper and am so saddened to read about the proposed budget shortfall! Has there been any talk yet on how this will affect tuition and also merit scholarships?

I’m traveling - is there a way to check scholarship/honors results online?

@carachel2, There has not been any word about how the budget will affect tuition yet. But as soon as it is decided, you will be able to access the information on pitt.edu.

@mikanpater, All scholarship offers are sent via mail first. If you are travelling for an extended time and cannot access mail, you can feel free to contact our office for information about how to proceed: oafa@pitt.edu or 412-624-7488.

Hey you replied like a month ago to me saying that although the scholarships deadline was Jan. 15, outstanding students will still be considered.

Just found out I didn’t get in to Hopkins, so I’m between Pitt and OSU; got 5700/year based on maximus scholarship; how do I find out about merit based aid for Pitt??

I would imagine I qualify for some aid- 35 ACT, valedictorian, Pres. of NHS, cross country/track & myriad extra curriculars

Do I need to contact someone?

Thanks, Carson.

@16cclark, your strategy for college application might not be thoughtful. You would get substantial benefits if you applied to Pitt early. GL.
