@whataboutcollege then I can’t help you. BU in my crew = Baylor. have a great weekend!
My twin DS20s, one took SAT(1570) and the other took ACT(36). Both have SI of 224., Is the cutoff for CA defined already? If so what is it?
@aki2020 According to Compass Prep, 224 should be safe in California. You won’t know for sure until they announce it in September.
@aki2020 agree with @lkg4answers and if you follow compass prep blog, Art will tell you it is almost statistically impossible for any state to go above 224.
Thanks @lkg4answers and @dpBU23
Compass Prep says 212 for Commended
Would someone mind explaining to me the significance, if any, of making Commended status. Also, when are we officially notified? Thanks
Did anybody receive an email from Texas A&M for National Scholar Invitational - Summer 2019 ? Will it be helpful to attend this session ? My DD20 will be really busy in summer with job and volunteering, so was wondering if attending this will be beneficial for her ? Texas A&M is on her college list, but it’s not in her top 5.
@ria24sm for schools that have automatic scholarships for NMF (or even NMSF) these invitations are recruiting efforts and do not impact acceptance decisions or NM scholarships.
@dpBU23 I am aware of this, but as it is 2 days program, I was thinking this will allow her to experience the student life at college and explore the major areas of interest. Thanks !
@TXRunningMom - the PSAT 10 taken sophomore year and the PSAT/NMSQT taken during the junior year are both scored on a 1520 scale, so you should be able to use the calculation for the PSAT/NMSQT for the PSAT 10.
(R&W+R&W+M)/100
My DD19 went from a 205 to 221 without any studying since we were completely clueless that the PSAT was anything other than practice for the SAT, so big improvements are possible. My DS21 just got his results and is at 203, so he’s within striking distance and will be spending some time this summer taking Khan Academy practice tests and analyzing the results.
@tpike12 , thanks for including your daughter’s statistics! That is very encouraging! My son’s school gave them the P-ACT this year so I don’t have any data points for a sophomore year PSAT. But, we will shoot for it anyway!
@ria24sm . my daughter did the Texas A&M Scholars event last summer and she recommends it. It gave her a feel for the campus life by spending the night. She said they went on a evening scavenger hunt/campus tour or something. Even random groups of students that they passed were friendly and said “Howdy”. As a parent, I got to see/hear/meet the adult side of things which was helpful. The director of dorm life (whatever his title was) spoke and gave great information about the honors housing and how/when to apply, etc. It was helpful putting faces with names in charge of the scholarship and scholars programs as we emailed with them later in the process. I would imagine they keep track of who goes but I don’t know. The more trips you make to campus, the more comfortable it feels! She is thrilled to join the Aggie family as a Brown Scholar/National Merit Finalist and will be going on the Italy trip in July with 29 of her soon to be new best friends!
@TXRunningMom - my mistake, I misread your post. He should take a practice PSAT (I think Khan has eight of them) and get an idea where his NMSQT score is.
@tpike12 , ah, that makes sense! I had not thought of doing that. Thanks for the idea!
@TXRunningMom - Thanks for your input ! That’s what I was looking for my DD… Will definitely try to attend one of sessions.
Glad to hear that your DD is doing well @ Texas A&M. Wishing her wonderful college years & a successful career ahead…!
@ria24sm we did get the A&M invite but it was delivered mid May. My daughter is not interested in A&M at all so we are not going. She is not interested in TX schools where she could attend for free (we are in Dallas area), so we are looking at FL schools and some private schools with merit money.
I can’t believe there are still at least 12 more weeks before we’ll begin t figure out the state cut offs! Having a child “on the bubble” again is killing me! I’m so glad this is my third and last time at this party!!!
I just used one of the free score reports on subject test taken last week to send the regular SAT score to NMSC as the confirming score for S20. I have a couple of questions,
- Is it ok for NMCS to receive some extra subject test scores in addition to the regular SAT score?
- Is it ok to use the lower SAT score vs. higher ACT score? I am just being cheap and try to leverage the free score report?
- to my knowledge, NMSC won’t care either way about subject tests so up to you
- as long as it’s a confirming score, it doesn’t matter whether you send ACT or SAT this year (for the first time).
best wishes all… I just went through this last year and even with a score that was clearly in, it still was very stressful. I won’t restate an earlier long post I submitted but short version is to do what you can to enjoy the moments while you can… senior year flies by!!
@dpBU23 Thanks!
