Class of 2020 RD Dicussion

I couldn’t seem to find one of these anywhere? But if it already exists, admin and mods, feel free to remove or combine this thread as needed.

Anyway, good luck to those who applied RD. How did you guys tackle the essays? Anyone know what the average stats are for applicants in the RD round?

Thanks! Good luck to you too  Out of all of the out of state one’s i applied to Emory is my top one! I already loved it before but after my interview I just seemed to fall more in love! I applied RD but before the Nov 15 deadling to qualify for the scholars program consideration. My essay on common app i loved more than the specific one for Emory but I loved them both still! And yes! if anyone knows the average stats, please go ahead and post!

hey guys! I applied to emory on 12/30 but I havent recieved an email on how to access the application status checker…should I be concerned or just wait it out??

also do NOT even get me started on the essay, I think i spend the most time on my emory supplement than any other supplement haha

@going4it Don’t be concerned! It took them I think 2 weeks to finally send an email on how to access my application

thank you! @BlackHuntress

I actually liked my Emory supplement more than my common app essay and was considering making my supplement my common app for other schools but I decided against it. Anyway, I applied on the first and haven’t gotten an email or anything either.

hi!

@a1h313 Don’t worry! I submitted my application on 11/15 and didn’t receive my email for the OPUS access information until 11/23.

I just received an email for my OPUS account, but my checklist says that all if my materials are “initiated”. Should I be worried?

@Balbina I think it takes them a few weeks to get everything downloaded. I’m in the same boat as you!

@Balbina Don’t worry about it too much honestly OPUS is really slow.

Hey guys, I was accepted this year during ED1. If any of you have any questions, I can do my best to answer them. Good luck to all of you.

@NeuroDude Congratulations! I could tell you really wanted to get accepted! did they offer you anything financially? or Scholarship wise yet? Thank you

@NeuroDude I have a few questions:

Did you apply to Emory College, Oxford College, or both?
Would you mind posting your stats?

@NeuroDude Yeah that would be super helpful if you could post your stats!

@Balbina, I applied only to Emory College and my stats are on the early decision blog on the first page.

@NeuroDude What is the article called?

I’ve heard that stats are higher in the RD round generally speaking. Maybe we can get some posts from RD applicants going so we have at least some insight on the application pool? I’ll start:

(Copy/pasted from an earlier thread sorry for the length)

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Scholastic Gold Key Writing awards I guess? Some state poetry wins, national merit semifinalist, I suppose the AP Scholar awards? Not much really.

Subjective:

Essays (rating 1-10, details): Common App Essay- 10/10 The most sincere essay I wrote. Discussed the relationship between me and my family and my love from writing which has put us at odds.
Supplement- Ooh this was rough haha. I submitted the app super last minute and struggled most with what to write :/\

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: 10/10. We are very close and she had it written since the summer. I trust her completely and know she wrote truthfully.
Teacher Rec #2: 8/10. Didn’t read this one either although the teacher offered. Also offered to write me a letter of recc but I doubt it was anything outstanding.
Counselor Rec: 7/10. I go to a large public school so most likely generic.

For reference for those of you applying RD my son’s stats last year were CR-SAT 700, M 700, WR 740 GPA 4.26. 7 7 APs. There were some subject SATs as well but I don’t remember the specifics except they were in the 700s. Seven kids from his HS in California applied - one was accepted to Oxford and my son was accepted to Emory. I think being a male and being from California might have helped. We were told at an open house last summer where the Dean of Students came and spoke that Emory would be pushing hard for more West Coast kids. And for those also wondering about aid/merit he got a grant for 10K and Federal Work Study of 3K. I want to note as well that every school he was accepted to gave him essentially the same amount - about 12K - 15K. All schools use the same calculation essentially and “fill” the gap which is determined to be “need” based with grants, aid, work study, etc. The calculation does not change significantly from school to school. And some school’s like NYU don’t even attempt to fill the gap. He got accepted there and received 0$. Lastly, he loves Emory and is having a great experience! Good luck to all of you!!! Hang in there!
