Class of 2020 RD Discussion Thread

To those who were accepted: congratulations! I was rejected. It hurts because Pomona was my top choice and I felt like I had everything going for me. I had the course load, a high sat score, volunteer work at a hospital, and a strong passion for science that was reflected in my course load and subject tests. In addition, I’m a URM and first generation who started a club fundraising for girls to go to school in third world countries. What do you think went wrong? Was I just not unique enough? Do you think these sort of liberal arts colleges look for more interest in other subjects?

Very happy dad here. Posting for daughter who was accepted. She also has an early write from Smith and acceptances from UCLA, UCSD, UF. Rest of the decisions (some Ivies, Stanford, a couple of other top LACs, Berkeley) are awaited but unless Pomona gets swallowed by the ground, she is enrolling. She regretted not using ED on Pomona - was too confused earlier and by the time she realized this was the best fit for her, the EDI & EDII dates had passed. So, obviously, she is very relieved and is on her laptop reading even more stuff about Pomona. I don’t think she will sleep tonight.

Question to others accepted: she does not see her major in the acceptance letter? is that the same for others too?

To all accepted congratulations, to those waitlisted - best of luck, to those rejected - as a parent i keep telling my daughter this great line i heard - get knocked down 10 times, get up 11. keep your chins up and keep giving it your best.

@khanam Congratulations to your daughter! Those are all amazing choices (especially Pomona)!

Accepted! I literally didn’t believe it, and i checked the message for 3 times before i burst into tears

Rejected by Bowdoin but accepted by Pomona haha!

Waitlisted by Pomona but accepted by CalTech. How can this happen?

@lordofthedance1 could be because Caltech noticed other qualities that were a lot more important to them (actual demonstrated deep interest in the subject you applied for) and maybe the Pomona essay was not exactly what they were looking for? At such low acceptance rate colleges, the difference between an admitted and a wait listed person is quite minute. Shrug your shoulders and don’t over think the discrepancy. Also if all colleges recruited everyone similarly, only the top kids would get into all the top colleges. That hardly ever happens. Colleges also make judgement calls based on personality traits highlighted.

@EstrellaDorado Hi I’m from China too! 加我微信?603217419

@ Khanam Most private colleges, including Pomona, do not assign you to a major or a dept. You have until the end of sophomore year to declare a major. In the meantime, explore the many courses available to you prior to making a decision.

DD just got accepted to Pomona, but wait-listed by Bowdoin and Case Western. Total surprise at acceptance by Pomona. Could barely believe her good fortune. SAT scores were average, but strong extra-curriculars including founding several organizations and growing them over 4 years. Can hardly wait to see Pomona up close. Congrats to others who were admitted to Pomona. To others who weren’t, remember that there are hundreds of other top colleges who would be lucky to have you and what you make of your opportunities matters more than anything else.

If they accepted you, they have confidence in your abilities. Pomona also has wonderful resources to help you. Congratulations!!!

@AlexiDingDong I agree with TNE2011. The admissions officers definitely knew what they were doing when they sat down, discussed you, and decided that you would make great contributions to Pomona. Congrats on Pomona and the other acceptances!

@AlexiDingDong agree with above posters. this might be a helpful link. Schools understand that not everyone has access to the same advantages for test prep or other things that help raise scores. If they admitted you they think you will do well at Pomona. Other wonderful schools like Bowdoin also saw your attributes.

@AlexiDingDong you got into too many good colleges. 1 could be a fluke (& even then most likely it is not a fluke) but for 4 good institutions to admit you, there can’t be any doubt that you were considered on the basis of your efforts and merit.

Also believe me, each one of your peers has self doubt as well. I am not from this generation but remember thinking to myself that I didn’t deserve to be admitted when I sat with the best and the brightest in the first class at my college. They all seemed like they were in a different league. And… they thought I was a part of the smart guys group and they individually weren’t. Funny but true.

Hi, everyone! I’m quite new to CC, so I’m sorry for asking this stupid question… but does anyone know where the “actual results” thread for RD applicants is? The one where you put your statistics and stuff? It’s just that I received a lot of help by looking at such threads and wanted to give back to the community. Thanks in advance!

@Ksister I only see a Ed one for 2020. You could start one. I do see a pattern though for schools like swarthmore and pomona of less posting of stats perhaps because the kind of students admitted to these schools are very bright but humble and less focused on stats. I do agree with you that it can be helpful to future applicants.

Denied

S now deciding between Pomona Wash U and Swarthmore. Thoughts? he just came back from spring preview at Wash U and really liked the school. Still loves the smaller feel of Pomona and swarthmore

@momof2eagles We visited Swarthmore and Haverford and was impressed by the beauty and defined campus feel of both colleges. Of course academics are top notch too. But the Swarthmore/Haverford/BrynMawr consortium is not nearly as integrated, broad or extensive as the 5C Claremont Consortium. The latter is what sold us on the 5C.

thx @Redpandabear S leaning towards Pomona over Swarthmore but going to admits days/overnights next week to make his final decision. i agree with you that with Swarthmore not practical to really engage in club/activities or many classes at Haverford and bryn mawr without lots of obstacles (time/distance/ thoughtful planning of classes) and much easier at Consortium.
