Thank you, @mom4bwayboy, something to consider.
@HannahMTheatre We have looked a little bit at DePaul. I may have more questions for you in the future! One of the draws of DePaul is that it is in Chicago, which is a city she could see herself in because of all the theater and comedy improv (another love of hers).
@jbeansmom Of course!! Feel free to contact me at any point during your process! Iāll have a lot more to share after I start classes in the fall.
Chicago was a big pull for me, too. I donāt really see myself as a New Yorker. I went to both New York and Chicago Unifieds, and I felt way more at home in Chicago. And the improv is definitely top notch. I saw Second City while we were in town, and it was incredible.
@HannahMTheatre Congratulations and best of luck to you!! Since you have selected this school I am hoping you an answer some questions. As a BFA program how many credits are required in the major? Also are voice lessons and dance classes included? I could only find core curriculum requirement son the site. Will you have classes in all three areas? Thanks!
This forum has become quiet now that the graduating seniors are committed and our rising seniors are busy studying for finals/regents/SATs/ACTs etcā¦ . I guess it will pick up again this summer
Take a deep breath and ārelaxā while you still can. College app/prescreen and audition season will heat up before you know it.
@mom4bwayboy Hahaaaā¦yes not stressed just went on today and noticed no new posts. I thought it was funny. I figure all of you who can finally relax are taking a break form us newbies! (actually my third child but first one going for MT so all this is new to me.)
Hi everyone, Iām a bass-baritone from New Hampshire that found this forum about half a year ago, although I created an account just now. I started singing when I was 8 and had my first theatre experiences as a boys chorister for several San Francisco Opera productions. After moving to New Hampshire Iāve been doing musicals at school and as part of teen community theatre programs. Iāve been mostly a singer for years so Iāve been trying to round out acting and dancing over the past couple years. Iām an all AP/Honors student but my grades in these classes range from Aās to Cās. Good luck to everyone else going through this and I hope to talk about it with you all!
@Joyfulmama Iāll have a much more complete answer to your questions after I attend orientation next month. I donāt want to feed you information thatās incorrect, so expect a message from me mid-July!
@JukeboxTheGhost Haha, Jukebox the Ghost is my favorite band!
@Joyfulmama You may want to consider Northwestern for your daughter. Strong academics and a renowned MT program.
@16bars Yes thank you, they are on our list as a reach school.
When do you all suppose the 2015-2016 audition dates will be posted for most schools? Iām trying to get a feel scheduling all of this. Do most schools keep to the same weekends most years?
In prior years theyāve been posted in August-ish times. The chicago unifieds for 2016 were already posted on here. Hopefully itās all the same as normal.
From following previous years - I have noticed auditions seem to be similar weekends from year to year. But of course there is always one doing it differently- so you need to make sure to check on each school- and donāt make any āofficialā (non refundable flight) plans until August
I am a planner and know I will want to buy plane tickets asap. However many of Dās choices require the Common App to be submitted before scheduling the audition/interview.
How early did you (previous classes) submit the Common App?
You are very wise to start early! The Common App was live as of August 1 for Class of 2018. My S had it completed prior to starting his Fall semester. It took some time after for him to complete school-specific essays and to prepare pre-screens. He completed and submitted apps and essays (no prescreens) generally by the end of September; those with prescreens before Thanksgiving. We felt a bit behind but as it turns out, he was fine. He was still working his audition material so needed the extra time to submit for prescreen schools. Also, you mention some schools require submission of the common app to schedule auditions. The schools on my S list required submission of the complete application package prior to.scheduling the audition (not just the common app portion) so be sure to carefully check each schoolās requirements.
@craspedia , you mentioned airline tickets so I thought I would mention the Companion Pass with Southwest Airlines. If you havenāt already gotten one of those, you might want to see about trying to get one ASAP. They are worth their weight in gold. An easy way to get one is to apply for two separate Southwest credit cards, both in your name, when they are offering the 50,000 mile bonus. This instantly gives you 100,000 miles and you will only need another 10,000 miles to reach the companion status. Once you do that, your kid will fly free with you AND you have 110,000 of miles to purchase tickets with so the two of you can actually fly free for several flights.
We wanted to do the early fall audition with Elon, so my kid had to have a prescreen done by their deadline which was Sept. 15. That was the earliest that I know of. I would recommend you not wait until the last minute to film the prescreens. We did that for some summer programs a few years ago and my kid got very sick and we had to film them with my kid not sounding very good at all. Also, if you have never uploaded anything to Acceptd, it may take you a while to get it figured out.
Now would be a great time for your kid to look at all The Common App, and the colleges (including honor colleges and any scholarships that you are interested in), and use this time to write all essays and prepare any resumeā that may be required. Some honor colleges and scholarships require a different type of resumeā than MT auditions. It will save a lot of time if you have all of this done over the summer. Things get very crazy in August when itās time for apps!
Another nice perk of Southwest is that you can change your airline tickets with no additional fees. You only pay the difference between the current price and the price you paid. We had to do that once and literally changed our ticket an hour before the flight and the cost was $2.
@Dusing2 , Thanks for the tip! Southwest will let you get two cards?
Yes, I did. One card is the premier ( or whatever they call it ) and the other is the ordinary card.
The other thing that came in handy with Southwest was when we were stuck on the East Coast during the snow storms and they started canceling flights, I just booked flights for several consecutive days, then cancelled the remaining reservations as soon as we were able to fly home. I love SWA!
How many schools are currently on your audition list? Ours is way too long - must be paired down
