@ohboy1519 you won’t get into any of those colleges

@hamily sure he won’t! i mean who would know better than you, an adcom member at all these institutions who also happens to know what @ohboy1519 's application is like!

@Shulav I mean my friend who had mid 1500 SAT score with all As and one A* didn’t get in because there were dozens of unqualified applicants who inundated the ED pool from Nepal. My apologies if I sounded rude but was just being realistic seeing what’s happened to my friends

@hamily Thanks for the feedback. Great anecdote. But what about your friend’s essays, EC’s and recommendation letters? Were they just as good? And which college specifically did he apply to? Also, according to our little list here, nobody from Nepal has been accepted into Vassar and Colgate yet. So, there’s still hope, right?

@ohboy1519 I don’t know how @hamily seems to know that, but that comment seems uncalled for. Colleges can fill most of the class with the best GPA/SAT combination holders - but that’s not what they always want. The student body has to have a character, with diverse backgrounds (and I don’t mean just demographics). Looking at your history, you mentioned you got 81% in +2, and 1500’s in SAT. I think Vassar and Colgate aren’t too far off from where I went to college (Lafayette) and I had a far lower score than you have. I also know people with even worse stats than mine, who were my class mates. The statistics can only tell you so much about an applicant. Yes, there’s a baseline that people have to meet, to ensure you can succeed academically - but above of that, the rest of the application comes into play. Please ignore @hamily’s comment, and apply to wherever you want. Besides, what have you got to lose anyways? You’ll always end up thinking, “what if I had applied there?” I assure you, you do not want to be asking questions like that down the line.

@hamily a little uncalled for :stuck_out_tongue:

@ohboy1519 I’m the one hamily is referring to. I applied to Hamilton ED with those stats, and I like to think my essays and ECAs weren’t so bad. But if you like the colleges, go for it. I think hamily was only trying to paint a better picture of how difficult getting into those colleges can be. Scores and grades are only going to make them consider you, so as long as you meet their average range, you have just as much of a chance as anybody else.

And about your question regarding Colgate, Vassar, or Hamilton; they all have their own appeals and it’s really up to you to research what they are and if they align with your needs or interests. Goodluck  I’m also applying to Colgate and Vassar.

@sixstringsrocker Hello and thank you! What you say is undeniably true. It takes more than good scores to get into colleges and lucky for me, I’ve had the privilege of being able to develop a strong passion, which I think would definitely contribute to a college’s diversity. Also, your past posts have helped me a lot in the application process, so thanks!

@thenameisNuwanda Goodluck to you too, my friend! I hope we both make it.

Re #229:

As clearly implied, stories, though potentially interesting, should not be regarded as constraining for potential applicants.

Re #228:
“I mean my friend who had mid 1500 SAT score with all As and one A* didn’t get in because there were dozens of unqualified applicants who inundated the ED pool from Nepal”

Typo? A surfeit of unqualified applicants would not hamper the admissibilty of a qualified applicant.

Aaaaand I have another silly question. For HSEB students, the graduation month is the same month the results come out, right? If so, then this year’s graduation time was late August. So, considering the fact that I theoretically had no way of applying to class of 2020 since I couldn’t officially graduate from highschool before college classes started (which is always before the end of August) and that I was obligated to take many months off from school to apply for class of 2021, does this count as a gap year?

Also, I just got access to my application portal from a college I applied to. It says that it’s still waiting for my mid-year report, but since I’ve already graduated, I don’t think I need to submit one. Should I email the college saying that a mid-year report doesn’t apply to me or will it sort our itself? Thanks!

Well, you don’t technically need your 12th grade board exams to apply. That’s the norm, in fact. You apply with your 11th grade results. We don’t have a mid-year report system, since we only have board exams at the end of year. You can send internal exams as mid-year. Be sure to explain all this though, may be somewhere in the application or via email contact w/ the adcom.

Since you have already appeared for your HSEB boards, you are in a gap year, for sure.

I was in a similar situation, I already had everything work out before I took HSEB boards - so I left Nepal without attending my graduation, and submitted my transcript to the college only after my first semester ended. This constitutes as not taking a gap year.

When in doubt, email the college.

@ohboy1519 Definately not Vassar cause I’m applying there xD

Anyone applying to MIT RA?
