Based on past trends, people have been notified on the Friday before President’s Day.
Feb 17
I just called and they said it’ll be in march because the Finalist weekend is late March/early April.
@tfc38z Oh no! That sucks. I was really looking forward to finding out.
@tfc38z Are you sure? The last few years, the scholarship weekend has been around the same time, and yet they heard back around President’s Day.
@JemmaSimmons Based on what they told me, it’s going to be early March. I mentioned to them that I heard it would be later in February and the person I talked to said that it would be still be released in March.
@tfc38z Gross… well, thank you for clarifying.
I applied for Lien an hour and twelve minutes behind after falling asleep on my keyboard. The portal still let me submit, but crossing my fingers that my app wasn’t tossed QQ…
Does anyone know whether essays or scores are weighted more heavily for the scholarships?
are we sure scholarship notifications won’t come out this coming week? every year for the last like… 7 years, it’s been the week before President’s Day. it’d be really weird if this year they released in March, especially since it’d be so close to the interview dates (which usually are in mid-March)… just my two cents though. If anything, someone should call Monday and see if they give any info.
@sirhcgled The scholarship weekend this year is end of March (Mar. 31-Apr. 2), so that’s a little bit different. However, I tend to agree with you. I was reading through last year’s thread, and apparently when someone called then, they were told it would be March, as well. Still, it came out this coming week. I don’t know if calling again will elicit a different answer than tfc38z got (many thanks for calling in the first place). I still hope/believe results will come out this Thursday or Friday, but I wouldn’t be terribly surprised if they came out the week after due to the late timing of the scholarship weekend.
What is scholarship weekend?
@Sam-I-Am It’s a required interview weekend all finalists for major scholarships must go to. WashU flies finalists out. For many scholarships, the interview is what differentiates the half tuitions from the full tuitions.
It seems reasonable that families would need at least 30 days to be able to plan to attend an on campus event.
I really hope it will come out this Friday.
@JemmaSimmons, thank you for the explanation. How sure are you that scholarship weekend interviews will take place the weekend of March 31-April 2? Does each finalist interview with one person, a panel of people, or have multiple interviews?
This would seem to make a lot of sense. If we are to assume that most students will be receiving acceptance and rejection letters from various schools by the end of March, then the scholarship weekend will cause finalists to focus on WashU at a very crucial time.
@Sam-I-Am From the Ervin Scholarship description (for example):
“The Ervin Scholars Committee will evaluate applications and invite finalists to Washington University for a four-day weekend program, including group activities and personal interviews. To remain eligible for the scholarships, finalists will need to come to Washington University March 30 through April 2, 2017, for these activities. Washington University will pay for finalists’ round-trip expenses within the United States and their expenses in St. Louis during these four days.”
That is really as much as I know about the experience.
@JemmaSimmons, thanks for that information. It sounds like a wonderful opportunity for those lucky enough to be selected as finalists! Good luck to everyone that applied!
That’s great. Congratulations, @JemmaSimmons! Happy for you… Do share your statistics and experience.
I wonder if this includes Danforth Scholarship applicants?
@CollegeDadTX Oh no, I haven’t gotten any scholarship or anything yet. I found the description on WashU’s general website. In fact I didn’t even apply to the Ervin, haha. I did apply to Danforth, and yes, @HSCounselor2, finalists for Danforth come to the weekend, as well.
