Class of 2021 (sharing, venting, etc)

Tons of people pass up CMU LOL… so glad it worked out for your son

@JaneDo my son is seriously considering Syracuse as well- Has been his favorite all along. The price tag is very scary though and we are trying to figure out how to financially swing it. He has friends there who love it.

Just called the school and she is accepted for the BFA MT. Yeah! Now she can do her happy dance. She was convinced it was just another academic admit with money. Haha! She is so jaded. She is thrilled - she loved everything about Hartt.

I mean who passes it up after going through process to apply and schedule. I know not everyone auditions there or is interested. It was actually in his top 5 @bisouu

@sopranomtmom anxiously awaiting Hartt financial offer . . . My D would qualify for significant academic $$, so am disappointed Conservatory students ineligible. Hope talent money is comparable.

@sopranomtmom My D is accepted in Hartt MT as well. She auditioned at NYC Unifieds, so we are visiting on 4/7. Can’t wait to see the school and hope she falls in love. We are still waiting on Pace, BoCo, and Muhlenberg. She is waiting on Pace and BoCo prior to making her decision.

@milmom2 - Thank you so much for your response. We are in the same boat. Its good to hear about kids currently in the program who are loving it. Super excited about everything BUT the financial aspect.

@JaneDo (and @milmom2 if you are interested and b/c you said your son is considering Syracuse) - here are bits of D’s story in making final decisions…

Reason #1 why she did NOT choose Syracuse was that while she had spent much of the year debating between Acting and MT (she applied to both types and was accepted to 2 BFA acting and 1 BFA MT) she was really leaning towards acting by the time the year was done - and Syracuse was the MT acceptance.
Reason #2 for NOT Syracuse is that she really wanted an urban setting rather than a traditional campus. She is not a sports girl, or a Greek girl, and felt that if she went to Syracuse she would never feel part of what makes the campus tick. She said she had felt like an outsider long enough  That was a tough one on ME b/c I thought a traditional experience would be nice, but she didn’t agree. Another facet of this is that the theater building (which is also part of the professional company of the Syracuse Stage) is a fair distance from the campus - again, creating a potential disconnect with the rest of the school (though of course plenty of opportunities to be close to other theater kids) There was also a joke about hating the color Orange -but that wasn’t real issue. (bonus for NYU, purple has been her favorite color since she was 3)

Reason #1 For NYU - she had done the summer program there summer between junior and senior year, and fell in love. TBH - there really weren’t a lot of other schools that would have knocked NYU off the top for her.
Reason #2 For NYU - it offered excellent academics, and required her to take more “normal” classes than at some other BFA programs- which was a plus for her - she wanted more of that in her college experience. Syracuse is more of a conservatory within the college type thing. Not that there is anything wrong with a conservatory approach, by D was looking for something else
Reason #3 For NYU - Opportunity to study abroad. NYU has a connection to RADA, and that REALLY appealed to D. It was somewhat of a risk, as you have to audition for that program - but it worked in the end, she got to spend a semester there this fall.

Syracuse is a FANTASTIC school. Ralph Zito (head of dept) was hands down my favorite person we met/talked to at ANY of the schools where she auditioned. I would have been very happy to have her there (in fact, we have a long running joke about it) Hope all of this helps!!

@daughtersdreams Thank you for the LIU Tip…actually my oldest was a BFA Dance Major there back in 2007. So I’m very familiar with the school but didn’t realize until I saw them at Unifieds that MT was a thing there. Just sorry we didn’t do a walk in and they were recruiting for walk ins. But I’m going to submit a late app w/ videos. You never know…thanks again!

ok so I have a question which is sorta a moot point at this juncture but wanted to ask about it because it just came to my attention again and is bothering me. Perhaps someone else can shed a light on it.

When my D auditioned at Baldwin Wallace, she attended a day that apparently the head of the MT dept was not in attendance. now I would never know this except for it was mentioned on the forum that people knew she wouldn’t be there and when I asked my daughter if she was in her audition, she said no she wasn’t
.
Now people are telling me (recently after asking if she was accepted etc) that if the head of MT wasn’t there that there was slim chance my D would’ve been offered a spot anyway because she has to see everyone in person? Like she is really involved in the selection process obviously. Is this accurate does anyone know? Because I cannot believe they would even audition people if that were the case but I mean they were already scheduled so…

It is disturbing me and of course my D got a denial from them so I am not trying to be sour grapes as the school may not have even been right for her anyway, etc. But this piece of info has me sorta confused. I had really forgotten about it from before but someone literally just told me this again yesterday.

@TooWonderful what I have heard about NYU is that they basically outsource the program to local studios and that you end up paying a premium with no value add on the Theatre side.

Also…I believe Syracuse has the semester in NYC Senior year which I think is a big big plus…That program is highly respected but is costly

@theaterwork, they wouldn’t have been holding auditions if no one was going to be accepted. Programs audition all the time at Unifieds without everyone there. Many of them tape auditioners, as CCM does, so everyone can review the auditions back on campus. I’ve found “people have been telling me” to be a uniformly unreliable source of information in this crazy process.

@ALS0830 Get ThroatCoat herbal tea and guzzle two or three cups tonight. My D hates the taste of it, but it has gotten her through many tough performances when she had colds or scratchy throats. - That’s if she decides to go and audition.

Personally, I like the no pressure “girls night away” idea someone else posted. ;

yeah @CTDramaMom i totally do not believe everything i hear and would blow it off but wanted to ask because I know BW does not go to Unifieds and only does the on campus auditions. It was one person who told me yesterday and it seemed to be a reliable source but yes…everyone has their opinions.

@sopranomtmom Congratulations! Had a similar “am I or aren’t I” experience.

You’d think the school(s) would get tired of fielding all the phone calls they get from vague emails and texts and even letters – and take some steps to be more specific. Would save all of us and them time and frustration.

@janedo. My daughter is at Syracuse and loves it! She feels challenged and supported at the same time. Loves the fact that she has some “real” college experience, although the program is so rigorous that doesn’t do as much as she thought she might. Of her 11 options, she felt this was the school That had the training and in-house talent to push her. She is also from the west coast and use to warmer weather but she’s adapted, and she walks to the stage most days as part of her physical training. All that being said…go where your heart tells you is best for you. Good luck!

@ALS0830 For what it’s worth, my S received a significant merit scholarship and then a decent artistic scholarship. Might be worth the trip if you are looking for money!

So, after all of my frustration with Temple insisting yesterday that my D wold not have an academic acceptance until the third week in April, I just checked the portal and it says “Congratulations on your acceptance!” Lol. I guess that squeaky wheel thing has some merit.

@sopranomtmom Congrats on Hartt - we hear good things! Do you mind if I ask when your daughter auditioned - referring back to the “rolling admission” question we were discussing on here sometime in the last couple of days?
