Class of 2021 (sharing, venting, etc)

I got accepted to tisch!! But alas, unable to afford it. Oh well it’s nice to know I got in at least. Onward and Upward!

Not every school activates the waitlist to get the net enrollment they want. Some schools use a combination of gross/net plus waitlist. This means they offer acceptances to more students than they expect to net and will only turn to the waitlist if they determine that the accepted offers of enrollment slip below the targeted net. They won’t know if that is the case until they have heard from everyone they sent enrollment offers to or after May 1st - whichever comes first. And by the way, I have no idea if Tisch does the Gross/Net plus waitlist. When my daughter applied I don’t recall that they used a waitlist at all and may have just done the gross/net. However that was a while ago and it’s possible they exclusively turn to a waitlist to get their targeted numbers. My spidey sense would say that with such a large (and expensive) program they know full well it’s a lot easier to build enrollment momentum when students are not in limbo.

So it’s hard to say if someone declining a particular school will automatically mean that someone on a waitlist will be offered a spot. They certainly might be but they also may not be. Certainly being open to multiple studios at a school like NYU Tisch will increase the odds if you are on a waitlist. And yes, @AnotherBrickX, if NYU Tisch is your daughter’s first choice and you’re prepared to send her there, I’d absolutely not wait to respond including having her send an email to the department indicating her interest. Can’t hurt.

@sarajanine, usually studio assignment lags a week or so behind admission decisions. You’ll get an email.

@LAM2017 According to the Common Data Set for NYU in 2015/16, NYU on average met 69.5% of need (the difference between cost of attendance and EFC.) That number does not include loans or work study, but is based on grant money.

@milmom2 For federal work study, there is a maximum allowance (average is #3,000 for the year) and students get jobs on campus which generally pay about $ 12 to 15/hr. So they can work in an administrative office, library, bookstore, monitoring an art studio, sell theatre tickets, etc.) They are allowed to work a maximum of 20 hours a week until they max out.

D had work-study as a grad student and ended up being paid from another budget after she maxed out on work study.

Does anyone have any info on the BFA MT program at the University of Central Florida?

D was waitlisted for NYU Tisch. This process has been such a learning experience. My D chose a handful of top schools that seemed to be a good fit. She had seven scheduled auditions at one Unified location, and did one additional walk-in. There were so many fine schools that we had never heard of… hard to say if she would have done anything differently. She did get one really great offer from one of her tippy top choices, a few redirects, and a couple of waitlists. She is VERY excited about the solid program offer, but I see her head spinning too. Hard to know what to do amidst all the waiting, and hoping. Congrats to all - and so grateful to CC for all the great info and support. Wish I had found you all last year!!!

@flipflopmama3 Yes it is fantastic! Not sure why there isn’t more buzz here but they are super talented and very connected with Disney. You can see videos on youtube.

Can anyone comment on what kind of MT training if any is offered in the other studios? My D is really passionate about MT and is worried she might not get enough training if she is assigned to another studio. I know we should probably wait until the assignments are made but just wondering

@halflokum - thanks for setting that straight - sorry to all for giving the wrong info (wish I could go back and edit it out so others won’t get confused!). My memory on that issue was fuzzy & not really relevant to anyone who isn’t waitlisted. (I went back to look and after D came off the WL on 4/29, we had until May 13 to make her decision - the email notifying her of her placement came May 12). In any event, we did not have to accept first to get studio placement… (didn’t mean to add to anyone’s stress!)

@Theatrical - almost every studio offers movement of some kind (including dance) as part of their curriculum. Adler has dance classes (D is in a ballet class this semester). I can’t speak to the singing curriculum of each studio - but all students can take private voice lessons through Steinhardt (which is what my D does - it’s part of the tuition + $100 fee for 1/2 hour weekly private lesson). There are many opportunities for supplemental dance classes in the city.

@remartin67 looking forward to hear your decision! We got a WL email from Syracuse today. Waiting on UWSP and then decision time!

@Theatrical All NYU students can take private voice lessons through Steinhardt for a minimal fee as @WTXMom described. But these lessons are for 30 minutes and are taught by grad students. Vocal Performance majors at Steinhardt get weekly hour long lessons with full-time faculty.

My younger D (who majored in art) took lessons with an excellent grad student, but for some of the VP grad students, it is their first experience teaching. I believe it is required of students as part of their training.

@WTXMom no worries. Just jumped in to clarify.

@Theatrical I think it’s important to be realistic about your question. The proportion of training that the non-MT studios get specific to singing and dance is not the same as the amount of coursework one would find in those areas in the MT studio. It just isn’t. But none of that is fatal for someone that wants to be an MT actor - AT ALL. I mean Phillipa Soo went to Julliard and where they don’t have an MT track and though I didn’t see her in Hamilton, I saw her in the first iteration of “Natasha Pierre and the War of 1812” and she BLEW me away. As did @soozievt’s daughter in the same production and speaking of her daughter, she didn’t spend all 4 years in the MT studio at Tisch either and she’s on fire for a whole bunch of reasons but most of those roads still lead to her foundation in MT.

After the first two years of primary studio training there are people that will transfer into (and out of) the MT studio. My daughter said that the kids who transferred into MT came in with a much broader understanding of plays and playwrights that she really envied. They may have spent more time working on physical acting and other skills that she would have loved to have done more of since she considers herself a serious actress. But they were less trained at that point in “acting the song” etc. and had to work harder in those areas. Some of them were better dancers than she was and some had limited dance. None of this meant they would ultimately prove to be less good at MT, it was just not where they had spent their time in primary training. In reverse, it also doesn’t mean that that every MT was an inferior actor. At the end of the day, this is a DRAMA program and that is the degree you get regardless of studio. The expectation is that all are actors first and the curriculum slants that way no matter what studio you are in. Also, there are specific guidelines for the curriculum across ALL studios. I think sophomore year of primary training is all about Shakespeare. This includes for the MT studio. And there is a big dose of Chekhov and other classics thrown in that year as well. Hope this helps.

@WTXMom, @uskoolfish, @halflokum, very helpful thank you. I am being realistic, just want a perspective from parents that have kids in other studios that they are happy and thriving. sounds like they are and very successful too.

@theatrical My daughter attended Strasberg her first two years and she had voice and dance all four semesters. The first semester in voice was mostly vocal production, and the remaining 3 were singing. She basically worked on repertoire and performed it in class with critiques. She also took private voice and piano from Steinhart, but felt the private voice lessons were not up to her singing level and she ended up taking private lessons from one of her voice teachers at Strasberg,( most of them teach privately as well for a fee.) She took ballet first two semesters, jazz third semester and tap fourth semester. In addition she had tai chi, alexander etc. She came in as a dancer so wasn’t too concerned about taking only one dance class per semester. She also lived in Third North and then Palladium with was a block from Peridance which has open dance classes whenever time permitted. She was in 3 musicals and could have auditioned for more, but she got a job and her schedule became very full. She is now Stonestreet and is doing on camera acting and directing and she absolutely loves it, but she isn’t doing much dance at this point. She does perform in cabernet shows around the city though since she loves to sing. She initially felt the same as your daughter, but wanted to learn what she didn’t already know and is very happy doing so. She’s a junior and meeting with agents at this point so I feel that she made the right choice. There are many opportunities to do MT at Tisch outside of your studio.

@Theatrical -I have said this before- one of the best things about NYU is the flexibility. In many schools BFAs are on a very rigid course of study - NYU allows kids opportunities to explore in many areas. My D was also concerned about MT skills slipping, I don’t think they have. She has taken ballet, modern and jazz dance via her acting studio (she’s a junior, and in the Adler studio- and to be fair, a mover, not a dancer). She took a year of voice via Steinhardt, and is currently taking private voice in the city. (Which for us worked out cheaper b/c she takes combat every semester and it fills up her “extra hours”, we would have to pay additional tuition to add in voice). D talked about trying to potentially spending some time in the MT studio after her 2 years of primary, but ultimately went for the RADA semester, and is planning to move to the film studio 1st semester next year

@milmom2 yes she did get work study - but the amount they expect us to pay is not doable. Say what you want - they definitely are not meeting need by any definition of the term and are miles away from other colleges assessments or what the FAFSA told us. So sad. I had work study in college and worked in the library - it is a great thing if student’s qualify. But coming out of college with massive debt and an MT degree seems like madness. Especially when we have a good friend who is an agent in NY and says “You don’t need a college degree to sing and dance…” Not sure that I agree with her - we still want one. But look at Jonathan Groff he said no to Carnegie because he didn’t want the debt…(but then he is Jonathan Groff <3!)

Thank you @samigaga! My daughter was accepted into their MT program but it is very hard to find any info on it! I will have her check out the videos on YouTube.

I thought I remember hearing that Boco comes out today? Can someone verify and do you know if they send an email?

For as long as I can remember NYU/Tisch was at the top of my D’s very, very big reach of schools. Even when she started to make her list, it was at the top. As she was compiling her list, I made her do a spreadsheet and enter the yearly college tuition for every school she wanted to apply - and we talked about how much I had saved in her college fund and how much that would cover over the course of 4 years. At 76K per year, NYU was the first to come off the list. I was surprised as how easily she did it. Her comment to me was “I can’t justify that kind of debt for a BFA in MT” - it was a big moment in our house! I had promised her if she got in to CMU or BOCO I would somehow “figure it out” - but knowing we would not qualify for much money (we didn’t qualify for any FAFSA $) - the burden of loans was going to fall on her. It would have been very tough if she would have applied and she would have got it to then say, “you can’t go because we can’t afford it”. It is a fantastic school - and to all those that have been accepted - it IS A BIG DEAL! Congrats and good luck!

How many students does NYU/Tisch accept into just the MT studio?
