Apparently the person who sent the email is now on his way to the west coast for transfer auditions and no one else in the admissions office knows anything about it.The line that says “a couple of months” is hopefully a mistake but seriously? That’s a pretty big mistake. Also, the entire tone is so casual, when clearly, they know it might be problematic for the majority of kids to get their assignment and some others will receive this very enigmatic email with barely any info about when they will get an assignment or why it wasn’t sent with the others. It would be fine if it said, “we haven’t quite finished yet, but no worries, you will have your assignment by April 15th, as we said in our earlier correspondence.” But this is what it said:
I know you are excited to receive your studio placement and I am equally as excited to send it along to you. While many studio placements will go out this week, we have—as we often do—a number of studio placements that are still pending at this time for all of our studios (New Studio, Adler, Atlantic, ETW, Meisner, Playwrights and Strasberg).
I ask for your patience while we continue our work on this important process. We hope to complete these pending placements over the course of the next couple of months.
I am not bashing Tisch. I’m thrilled my daughter was accepted and believe me I can name 6 or 7 other schools that have sent things to me in error, or the completely wrong communication, or handled things very poorly (maybe it’s because our kids apply to so many schools that we see more of this??). However, it is April 7th. It’s been a long year. We have to make a decision by May 1st. Ain’t nobody got time for this! There better be a follow up email very soon correcting that “couple of months” line.
Greetings from the Department of Drama! We very much look forward to having you join us in the fall.

Tisch Drama is truly a wonderful place. All of our studios offer valuable approaches to professional training—so much so in fact that we’d love for you to study in all of them! However, that might keep you in school a little longer than you’d planned. So, we’ll stick to finding just the right studio for you.
Please come for a visit! As I mentioned in my previous email, we have Admitted Student info sessions almost every weekday in April at 1:00 PM in the Drama department. Keep an eye out for information about NYU’s Weekend on the Square event for admitted students on SAT 22 APR.
In the meantime, please feel free to contact me at if you have any questions.
@halflokum I’d like to think you are right, but the email seems quite deliberate. They are leaving (at least) some kids hanging, maybe for months. Luckily for my D, NYU is not her only good option, so we are moving on… (I got the three dots idea from NYU :)).)
@tabers, I can’t imagine it is deliberate. It’s not even remotely clever and certainly not funny. It is also never the case that they have told some students and not others. They know darn well in the age of social media that would be an open invitation for the phones to ring off the hook. But I don’t blame you for moving on if it bugs you. Hopefully for reasons though that are more specific than “…” s.
@tabers that is really weird. Are you making your NYU decision based on studio placement? Last year I believe all studio placements were done by April 15 in time for the accepted student day.
@halflokum@Ducky312 Thankfully, my D has other MT options she is excited about. She narrowed down her choices to three, with NYU still in the running, if she was placed in New Studio. Even then, I had planned to negotiate with NYU for money, because the other options come with talent money. If she hears from NYU by April 15, and if she gets placed in New Studio (both of which seem like longshots at this time), then we’ll probably stick with that plan. If not, she will happily select one of the other options and not look back.
Sending the email was deliberate on the part of the person who sent it clearly. What is more troubling is why? And why would noone else in the department know anything about it? And it would truly not be a big deal if it even said that we would get assignments by the 15th (which is what we were told in an email that followed the acceptance letter). It is the casual “couple of months” line that is troubling. While a decision may not be made entirely about the school based on which studio, it certainly is an important factor, especially when a student has other options. It is all part of weighing the options. Additionally, if you don’t know your studio assignment, before you make your decision, it would be hard to really get a sense of your precise curriculum, etc. We’re ok with waiting until the 15th (although I would still say that it was bad form to send the majority out yesterday) but not as OK with the vaguely worded email when we have three short weeks to make a big decision.
As I said this is not the first big blunder I’ve encountered. Another very reputable institution academically rejected my daughter which seemed like a mistake to me, because she is an honors student and although their MT program is coveted, her grades were well beyond what they needed to be to get into the college. When I questioned it, after 24 hours of investigation, I was told that it was an error, and they were very sorry to have sent my daughter the wrong letter!
Tisch is not the only school guilty of a poorly executed piece of communication. Not by a longshot. It’s actually quite astounding how common it is especially considering the sources.
While I certainly agree that this is a unfortunate situation - I disagree with the notion that it is deliberate- and it CERTAINLY wasn’t from the studios themselves. This would be central office type thing- and like faux pas made by many schools- what happens within the admissions dept has NOTHING to do with what happens in class
Deliberate meaning that it was a deliberately sent piece of communication from the Director of Admissions in the Department of Drama and a deliberate decision was made to send out placements yesterday to a majority of students and send an email to others with very vague wording about when they might receive theirs. That’s all I meant by deliberate. Those without a placement at the moment are left to wonder whether it just means they didn’t have time to send them out before the person left today (was told they were on their way to the west cost for transfer auditions), or whether they haven’t yet decided on placements for these students… Most of all, left wondering when we’ll hear back because “a couple of months” is ludicrous. I truly hope we will get another email that says, We are so sorry. That was supposed to say, a couple of days! or by April 15th.
@Spike27, Sorry I didn’t see your detailed posts 4540 and 4542. I am shocked and appalled. I’ve never heard of them doing this before but indeed, the wording certainly would leave one to believe it is deliberate. What the heck were they thinking? I mean how hard would it be to wait until you are finished and then just send them all out together? Shaking my head. Tisch tisch tisch…
I’m also surprised they mentioned ETW in their list of the potential studios. Will they be placing Freshman in ETW next year, or was that for transfers?
Maybe someone should start an NYU training studio thread so it would be easy for new parents to find this conversation if they are having the same problems?
Kind of happy we are in Steinhardt and not Tisch (lol…I actually think they are both great programs!)
Is anybody else in waitlist limbo??? We haven’t seen or heard much about people getting in off of waitlists yet. We’ve got some big guns we’re waiting on and also have to decide where to go out of all the acceptances. I have given her the week off from thinking about it. But she will have to choose (although financially we are part of this decision…) - unfortunately it’s hard to do when she feels she is so close to living her dream. Anybody else in this boat???
I am so envious of everyone who knows what they are doing!
