@justanotherdreamer, remember that getting off the waitlist is likely just as random as the initial admission decision - probably more so as everyone put on the waitlist is equally qualified.
While my DD is waiting on a couple of schools as well, she’s also got a great choice that she’s been admitted to that she knows has a 99% chance of being her home for the next four years, and she is really exited by it - hope you are as well!
Just wondering, but did anyone else notice it seems like Wesleyan somewhat ranks the waitlist? They say on their website that they don’t rank, but have a rating system that gives them an idea of who the strongest waitlist applicants are. I know it isn’t technically “ranking” but say they have a rating system of 1-10, and 10 waitlisted applicants are scored 10/10… If they ended up with 10 spots to fill, wouldn’t they just accept the highest rated students? That makes the most sense to me since a lot of other colleges don’t update the first wave of students accepted from the waitlist until May 20 or so…
@Swillow1022, I think you may be reading into it too much because even after they ranked waitlist candidates as RD acceptances were being sent out, they now have to look at who has been admitted and consider male/female ratios amongst other criteria to ensure they have a balanced class.
@Chembiodad Thanks for the reminder, I appreciate it. I guess it’s important to be realistic. I’m happy with my current option and will be satisfied knowing I am going somewhere that the admissions officers felt I belong. It’s disappointing to not get in, but eventually you just have to face reality. Thank you, and best of luck to your daughter!
@Swillow1022 I believe this is true for most waitlists at any schools. Apart from other factors like male to female ratio, or specific things like needing a particular instrument for the band/orchestra or wanting a certain type of student to even out the student body, most schools will just pick off the most qualified applicants. These are all people they wanted in the first place anyway, so it makes sense to fill any remaining spots beyond the specific cases with whoever is most qualified. Like they stated in the waitlist letter, even though they don’t rank, they do make notes of “strengths”.
Also something else to think about, I believe Wesleyan is need aware when accepting off the waitlist… I think someone who commented earlier that got off the waitlist mentioned they didn’t apply for aid, which supports this idea. Especially with Wesleyan’s relatively low endowment per student ratio compared to other top LACs, they probably do try and look for people who can pay more.
@athlete101 Did you apply for FA?
hey @athlete101, what did you apply for as a desired major?
anyone on the waitlist that needs financial aid and got in?
For any future people who are accepted off the waitlist and comment here, would you mind saying whether or not you applied for financial aid, and some brief info about your stats, what you did, etc.?
Also I posted a comment here earlier and went back a few times to edit some mistakes but eventually when I tried to post it it said something like “your comment will be posted once it has been approved”. What does this mean? Sorry, I’m new here. I’m kind of annoyed because it was a pretty long comment, and I’m not sure why going back multiple times to edit and fix parts of it would cause it to be deleted.
@justanotherdreamer although I’m sure it’s true for many schools, I’m mostly comparing it to my other waitlists (Princeton and Columbia) where they go through all applicants again instead of just looking at ratings…
We applied for financial aid and my kid got off. Not likely to qualify for more than 20K, but that will help. Stats are 3.95/4.5 unweighted/weighted. ACT 33, SAT2 Math 800. Very strong and numerous EC’s.
@athlete101 are you an athlete?
got my acceptance 2 days ago. not going to be an athlete
I guess, thank you so much!! ACT- 32, SAT bio- 750, SAT Math- 750, all A’s, strong essays(common app), didn’t apply for aid, applying for either a history major or something in government. probably not going to go to Wesleyan though.
@tenniswimvball, student-athlete?
@tenniswimvball what major is your kid applying for?
@athlete101 if you don’t mind me asking, where are you planning to attend instead?
Did anyone get a call from them today?
Has anyone gotten a call this week?
Would it be worthwhile to send an additional letter of rec or would it just be ignored?
Think I may also just send an email asking the adcom if they’d accept an additional one
@simchajean I thought about that when I originally got the waitlist notification, but the info the gave made it explicit that they don’t allow any supplementary materials other than the LOCI and your latest grades. Never hurts to ask though… but it might come across badly, like you didn’t read the info they gave you or pay attention to what they said. It was included in the FAQ after all.
